How the hoopsters Texas didn't get in 2012 have started

  • I don't count Isaiah Austin or Sulaimon, since I don't think Texas had a real shot at those. I'll look at Smart, House, Pollard, Smith-Rivera, White.

    Smart

Playing about as well as could be expected. Leading OSU in rebounds (on both ends), assists, steals. Not shooting well (just .333 overall and .125 from deep), but hitting 80% of ft. Doing it all and doing most of it very well.

    Pollard

Played his way out of the starting lineup by the fourth game. Shooting abysmally (.227 overall, .000 on 3s, .375 ft), not rebounding strongly (2.8 per game while averaging 22.5 minutes). Alabama was up against power conference teams in its last two games and won them both. Pollard managed 7 rebounds and 4 steals in 47 minutes in the two games, but was a zero on offense. He looks active crashing the boards; he just isn't effective once he gets the ball right now.

    House

First game jitters? Went 1/6 against Florida A&M. Was 4/6 against San Jose State. Getting 15.5 minutes a game off the bench. Redshirt freshman Jherrod Stiggers starting at wing and getting 26 minutes a game. Thomas and Gibson starting on the front line in what looks to be a three guard lineup.

    White

The biggest disappointment so far, but that could be in large part due to KU depth and Self's philosophy about developing freshmen. White is currently nothing more than an afterthought on the KU bench. Has played in 5 minutes of mop-up time in the two wins and didn't see the floor against MSU.

Edit: Added comment about Smith-Rivera below.

  • I can't believe I forgot to comment on Smith-Rivera, who has been playing very well for Georgetown. I guess I forgot to add him since he was out of the running some time back, IIRC.

There was some debate about whether he could be a point or would be an SG in college. He's showing SG all the way and doing great at it. Leading scorer, hitting .643 from the field, .714 from deep, .778 from the line, and not turning the ball over too frequently.

Georgetown has yet to see a marquee opponent, but it doesn't have to wait long. UCLA with Shabazz Muhammad in New York on Monday.

Smith-Rivera and Smart combine to make for a strong showing for the group of 5.

Wow that's insane! Still early but that's not just hot, he's on fire!
