We're personally experiencing a similar thing on a much smaller scale. My 13 year old daughter plays tournament fast pitch. She's played for and picked up with perhaps 8 teams. Recently she signed on with the best tournament team I've ever seen. The reason they're so good? The coaches conduct the most intense practices imaginable. It's nonstop for 3 hours. There's no chit chat and water breaks last about 1 minute each. You might think a kid made a great play but if the technique isn't perfect the coaches are all over it. If you hit the ball against the right field wall and the coach wanted it hit to left field you hear about it. If you caught a screaming grounder to the off side at short stop but your footwork was faulty it's addressed. Intense, intense, intense. It's simply remarkable what result you get.

It's about coaching. I have posted this before, but I watched Saban on TV rain all over A.J. for throwing at TD that required a great catch by a WR and missed an easy read to another player. Also, he was pissed this year when he had in his second or third team and they had a delay of game. Both times it was Saban not one of the other coaches. All I could see in my head is Mack clapping away.

Last year's Spring practice comes to mind. It's my recollection that Case was receiving accolades for completing some passes. Watching his body mechanics I was shocked that he was even being considered for the quarterback position. It doesn't really matter how many passes he completes if his mechanics aren't sound. You cannot be throwing off the back foot and have any type of velocity, much less accuracy. Eventually poor technique simply catches up to you, no matter how fine an athlete you are.
If, for example, D.J. ran for a touchdown but treated the ball like a French baguette he needs a do over as many times as it takes to address ball security. If a receiver made a magnificent catch but ran a poor route, you again have a do over until the routes are precisely run.
Texas is appearing to poorly develop some of the players it recruits. It's not rocket science; it simply requires an intensity that does appear to be missing.
If we're being relegated to lower caliber recruits we're in serious trouble if development remains an issue.
I've observed the same thing about Saban. He'd be hell to please; but he gets what he demands.

Anyone who'd tell it like it really is would be an improvement. Bobby would certainly do that. Saying that McWhorter may have been the worst talent evaluator in history is an indication. Guys, we're not the Joneses anymore. We desperately need intensity and the kids being recruited sense it. Just think back to your educational years. The best educators were often those "bitches and bastards" who forced you to give nothing less than your absolute best.

As the Willie Nelson song says "I'm not any smarter, I've just spent more time with my back to the wall."
And I am telling you, it is now beyond Mack's ability to correct.
Forget the fact that he is old and out of touch, the perception of Mack by too many coaches, parents and most importantly, HS kids is now so negative and the belief that he is short term is so pervasive, that in my opinion rather than showing improvement, Mack's stubborness is leading us into a rapidly accelerating decline.
Believe me, I have spent a lot of time with my back to the wall.

Bobby Burton said "If Mack Brown sits back and allows DeLoss Dodds and Chris Plonsky to push his games to the LHN, then he is making a major mistake and undervaluing how much kids want their friends to see themselves play on TV.
Mack Brown shouldn't try to get along with DeLoss Dodds. Brown needs to push for what is best for his program."
I differ not in direction of your view but in the focus. I see Chris Plonsky, not DeLoss as the problem. And I see her as a real problem. She has an agenda to make other sports more important at the expense of football and to make herself look important at the expense of both DeLoss and Mack.
