How Texas Can Improve Recruiting -- Ways to avoid slide on trail

  • Holio said...

It's happening on the Ticket too. Norm is using Texas as the example of recruiting classes that look good but the coaches don't develop. Used the Gilbert class as an example.

When people think of underachieving classes we're the first to come to mind.

We're personally experiencing a similar thing on a much smaller scale. My 13 year old daughter plays tournament fast pitch. She's played for and picked up with perhaps 8 teams. Recently she signed on with the best tournament team I've ever seen. The reason they're so good? The coaches conduct the most intense practices imaginable. It's nonstop for 3 hours. There's no chit chat and water breaks last about 1 minute each. You might think a kid made a great play but if the technique isn't perfect the coaches are all over it. If you hit the ball against the right field wall and the coach wanted it hit to left field you hear about it. If you caught a screaming grounder to the off side at short stop but your footwork was faulty it's addressed. Intense, intense, intense. It's simply remarkable what result you get.

  • Bobby, this is the most credible article anyone has ever written on here, bar none.

I am in total agreement with your thoughts. How about faxing this over to Mack, DeLoss, etc! We'll all back you on it!!!
Thanks for a really, really great look into what really needs to be done to make things better at Texas for now and it's future!

It's about coaching. I have posted this before, but I watched Saban on TV rain all over A.J. for throwing at TD that required a great catch by a WR and missed an easy read to another player. Also, he was pissed this year when he had in his second or third team and they had a delay of game. Both times it was Saban not one of the other coaches. All I could see in my head is Mack clapping away.

Last year's Spring practice comes to mind. It's my recollection that Case was receiving accolades for completing some passes. Watching his body mechanics I was shocked that he was even being considered for the quarterback position. It doesn't really matter how many passes he completes if his mechanics aren't sound. You cannot be throwing off the back foot and have any type of velocity, much less accuracy. Eventually poor technique simply catches up to you, no matter how fine an athlete you are.

If, for example, D.J. ran for a touchdown but treated the ball like a French baguette he needs a do over as many times as it takes to address ball security. If a receiver made a magnificent catch but ran a poor route, you again have a do over until the routes are precisely run.

Texas is appearing to poorly develop some of the players it recruits. It's not rocket science; it simply requires an intensity that does appear to be missing.

If we're being relegated to lower caliber recruits we're in serious trouble if development remains an issue.

I've observed the same thing about Saban. He'd be hell to please; but he gets what he demands.

  • Great well thought out ideas Bobby.
I wish there is some way Mack could read this.
My favorite is "Mack Brown shouldn't try to get along with DeLoss Dodds. Brown needs to push for what is best for his program."
I think Bobby Burton would make an excellent "personnel director"!

Jimmy Johnson was the same way. I think he knew where every player should be on every play and he expected them to do it right each time. I would not want to catch hell from either.

Again, slightly off point but the tournament team to which I refer has the damndest practices I've ever witnessed. The coach on Sunday hit a really hard chopper to the third baseman and it hit her in the left breast. You could see it literally knocked the wind out of her. Christ, it nearly brought tears to my eyes. The kid is a superb player. The coach said "Are you all right." She nodded and play resumed without any break. He later hit another hard chopper to my daughter at short stop. It knocked her mask off and almost knocked her down. The coach said "You need to use your glove" and practice immediately resumed. On other teams practice stops, the crying child is carried off the field and Mother intervenes. The improvement in skill level is becoming dramatic as a direct result of what the coaches demand. The coaches aren't heartless and the kids like them but it's a no bullshit situation. This is in microcosm what UT seems to lack.

Jimmy Johnson was one tough SOB; I agree. He seemed never satisfied. Look at his record and you can see the obvious payoff.

  • In case you guys missed it, Mack addressed some of this at the presser today.

On hiring more personnel to assist with film, evals, and on campus recruiting - He said he asked both the offensive and defensive staffs to bring him recommendations. He asked Arthur Johnson to get his staff to put together recommendations. He said he had his own ideas. And he knows Deloss is talking to other ADs about it.

Signatures are stupid. You should block them.

Anyone who'd tell it like it really is would be an improvement. Bobby would certainly do that. Saying that McWhorter may have been the worst talent evaluator in history is an indication. Guys, we're not the Joneses anymore. We desperately need intensity and the kids being recruited sense it. Just think back to your educational years. The best educators were often those "bitches and bastards" who forced you to give nothing less than your absolute best.

As the Willie Nelson song says "I'm not any smarter, I've just spent more time with my back to the wall."

And I am telling you, it is now beyond Mack's ability to correct.

Forget the fact that he is old and out of touch, the perception of Mack by too many coaches, parents and most importantly, HS kids is now so negative and the belief that he is short term is so pervasive, that in my opinion rather than showing improvement, Mack's stubborness is leading us into a rapidly accelerating decline.

Believe me, I have spent a lot of time with my back to the wall.

    BiggUggly,

Not sure I get your drift.

But it won't be on ESPN like OU's and A&M's. Instead, it'll be on a network too few people receive allowing for other teams to receive greater media attention.

Can the game be shown on both newtworks? Until ESPN comes through, we are screwed.

Bobby Burton said "If Mack Brown sits back and allows DeLoss Dodds and Chris Plonsky to push his games to the LHN, then he is making a major mistake and undervaluing how much kids want their friends to see themselves play on TV.

Mack Brown shouldn't try to get along with DeLoss Dodds. Brown needs to push for what is best for his program."

I differ not in direction of your view but in the focus. I see Chris Plonsky, not DeLoss as the problem. And I see her as a real problem. She has an agenda to make other sports more important at the expense of football and to make herself look important at the expense of both DeLoss and Mack.

Great observation! The funny thing is Plonsky's vision is funded by football!

  • Apologize for being Mr. Segue but I think what's happening here is a basic lack of intensity within the athletic programs. 50 years ago as a high school freshman I can recall being thankful for double mumps which allowed me to read the unabridged version of David Copperfield (1,200 pages). Vomiting and high fever for two weeks seemed a fair trade. The English teacher was considered sadistic, imperious and a bitch. Ironically, when she was 100 years old, as her lawyer, I had the pleasure of telling her that she was probably the most important influence in my life. Sally's cookies? Oh, please.

There are people in our lives who can make profound differences. We don't necessarily have to like them. Often we don't.

A pony keg of Shiner Bock with Mack, absolutely. With Belichick, Saban, Jim Harbaugh, Urban Meyer; reduce the deductible on my dental and health insurance before the party.

  • Well written Bobby. Your section on Getting games off of LHN was eye-opening. Keeping to a minimum makes sense but perhaps expanding the number of games shown should perhaps have been tied to closing the deal the cable and satellite operators. This would force ESPN to close the deal with the big cable and satellite operators in a reasnable amount of time before being given the rights to cover more games.. Hindsite is 20/20.

Win some big games and I believe most of the problems will cure themselves.

Priority: winning streak against OU. This will be a bench mark. Then seeking Conference Championships. Of course, what has not been a priority is another NC. "Waiting" for rebuilding is counter productive now, and long term.

  • Hiring all of the consultants will not change the mindset that gets it's butt whipped in Dallas. Nor loosing games that the program needs to win, to get back to the Top 5, and competing for NC's, much less the stepping stone of Conference Championships.

  • It may be ridiculous and a long, looooong shot, but why not backup a truck full of cash to Bill Parcells House and offer it to him to be a sort of player development/evaluation guy for one of those new Texas Football staff guys.

I think that Mack played for Parcells at FSU.

  • Mack Brown has always had a love/hate relationship with online recruiting sites. There is a lot of good advice in this article. I hope he takes heed. He should immediately double the salary of everyone on this site and staff his personnel department. Kill two birds with one stone. Once you are safely ensconced in your new jobs please get right to work on this one.
