How Texas Can Improve Recruiting -- Ways to avoid slide on trail

  • Recruit football players not nice guys who play football and go to church onn sunday; recruit the best national players; the standard is conference championships not the 10 win BS; Get Mack ass out recuiting on friday nights, stop giving Mack annual $100,000 raises

  • Wanna know how to get recruits, don't wait until 2 weeks till signing day to offer them....

I can't believe this only has ten up-votes as of right now. Bobby nailed it on this one.

I suspect it is because there is a great deal of apathy with the fans. Anything short of a new head coach leaves us wanting. I still am very confident that is coming by year end. What Mack does or doesn't do just seems irrelevant to improving things at this point imo.

  • Great article.

  • With all the decommitments this year, it is clear that competing coaches have figured out how to pick apart the appeal of playing for UT. It's up to Mack to create some new momentum with the Feb Jr days.

  • The best piece I have read since I subscribed. Texas needs to be trailblazers in recruiting. It is obvious that ain't the case.

  • Stop worrying about pleasing the Rich alums by filling up your team with "smilers". Get out of CTEX and go recruit inner city Dallas and Houston again.

  • Great read, Bobby.

It seems to me that Mack would set new standards for irresponsibility and laziness if he didnt take full advantage of these new rules.

We can outresource pretty much anyone we want ... and these rules are tailor-made for a school like Texas. It is, honestly, very unfair to programs short of revenue. We can, essentially, set up an NFL style evaluation system and a group of fantastic recruiters and, largely, just let the coaches coach and develop.

This is a life preserver for Mack if he can just get off his butt, be cutting edge and attack these new advantages. Supposedly he is and always has been all about recruiting. Hopefully he sees this and, after the recruiting version of the Bataan death march of the past few months, he has realized he better freakin get off his ass and do something or his recruiting is going to go to hell in a handbasket - at least compared to what it has been.

  • Wanna improve recruiting??? It's real simple.

Win more games, play better defense, and score some damn points.

  • As the Willie Nelson song says "I'm not any smarter, I've just spent more time with my back to the wall."

And I am telling you, it is now beyond Mack's ability to correct.

Forget the fact that he is old and out of touch, the perception of Mack by too many coaches, parents and most importantly, HS kids is now so negative and the belief that he is short term is so pervasive, that in my opinion rather than showing improvement, Mack's stubborness is leading us into a rapidly accelerating decline.

Believe me, I have spent a lot of time with my back to the wall.

  • Great solutions Bobby, but all is moot until Mack hangs it up.

  • Bobby, that's probably the best piece you've done. Getting games off the LHN is paramount.

    gordosan

  • I agree with Bobby that we need more coaches! More personnel period!

Watch a Bama game and look at their sidelines. You will see almost 15-20 coaches on the sidelines. Why do we have so few?

  • We all know Mack reads the site, but I hope every swinging dick with a twitter account on here tweeted this story to him.

  • Bobby Burton said "If Mack Brown sits back and allows DeLoss Dodds and Chris Plonsky to push his games to the LHN, then he is making a major mistake and undervaluing how much kids want their friends to see themselves play on TV.

Mack Brown shouldn't try to get along with DeLoss Dodds. Brown needs to push for what is best for his program."

I differ not in direction of your view but in the focus. I see Chris Plonsky, not DeLoss as the problem. And I see her as a real problem. She has an agenda to make other sports more important at the expense of football and to make herself look important at the expense of both DeLoss and Mack.

  • Anyone in the DFW area listening to 105.3 this morning? The ENTIRE Texas program was ripped to shreads - mentioned Texas is not signing a single 5 star recruit, how Vanderbilt 's class is rated higher than Texas, how the program will return to the McWilliams era, how the recruits feel Texas has seen its better days, how Applewhite ruined his chance to become head coach and embarassed The University, how Mack is not respected anymore, how Mack only won a national championship due to superstar Vince, etc - just could not believe how much trash was mentioned and thrown at Texas - UNBELIEVEABLE - have not heard this type of talk for at least 15 years - just makes me SICK!

AND the biggest problem with this type of negative comments is recruits as well as future recruits are hearing this everywhere - sorry but changes are required immediately and I do not think a 10-2 season will do the trick!

  • Bobby, great article. I like the LHN but I agree that they should have no more than 1 game on it per year. It was originally developed to show baseball, volleyball, some basketball (mostly women's probably), other sports, and special programming on football, the university, etc. Unfortunately, because ESPN paid so much money they want more football, men's basketball, etc. It is sad that most people (including recruits) can't see more than one football game, coaches shows, quite a few basketball games, the Spring Game, etc. while they can see all of these for other schools. That part of the LHN hurts a lot.

TexasHorn, I understand your angst at listening to the radio this morning. However, 17 year old kids don't listen to sports talk radio so I doubt future recruits are hearing much of it.

  • You're damn right about all of that Bobby. It has to happen here because it's going to be happening at the top programs elsewhere. Have to take advantage.

I fear Mack's ego screwing this up though

  • Bobby is a genius. Great stuff. I'd love to see recruiting hubs in key locations in the country. Recruiting coordinators that live in those hubs with an ear to the ground and frequent contact with high school coaches would go a long way.

It's happening on the Ticket too. Norm is using Texas as the example of recruiting classes that look good but the coaches don't develop. Used the Gilbert class as an example.

When people think of underachieving classes we're the first to come to mind.

  • Katy, unfortunately, parents, coaches and others close to the kids definitely listen - other programs are using this against Texas as I type - hard for an 17/18 year old to stay positive when all they hear is negatve things about the program - part of the problem is everyone expects the best from the flagship school - until Mack proves he can teach and actually develop a kid, then the rumors and comments will continue

The bottom line, this class is good but could have been alot stronger!

  • Excellent analysis, Bobby. UT may be in a better financial position than any other school to implement these ideas, perhaps in all programs. The brand has become remarkably valuable. I wonder how long it can remain so with poor performances in too many of our programs.

Ironic but a little over two years ago I was talking with R. C. and encouraging him to have A&M leave the Big 12 because A&M had become large enough to cease being the anti-UT. It needed to be itself and get rid of the huge chip on its shoulder. His response was that he mostly feared A&M couldn't recruit toe to toe with UT because of the LHN. Ironic because of what's actually coming to pass.

My best friends are all Aggies and it's becoming less and less comfortable to talk sports with them.
