How Texas Can Improve Recruiting -- Ways to avoid slide on trail

  • Lawhorn said...

Excellent analysis, Bobby. I have to think that some of your points have already occurred to Mack Brown. I think we sometimes fail to remember what a truly great recruiting innovator he was from the mid-90's through the "oughts."

With the change of the recruiting landscape emphasizing Sophomore and Junior players, Mack seems to have been caught by surprise in the evaluation and tactical areas of this brave new world of what I call "the casual commitment."

Truly the 3 keys to success in the future are Evaluation, Evaluation, Evaluation--from multiple angles and on several levels.

    Thanks!!

I agree with all of this.

But I have yet to see him make any significant movement as it relates to altering how evaluations are taking place and are ongoing. I think it's a true handicap for all colleges and he could virtually eliminate it. I think it's being left too much in an assistant coach's hand and too few people internally.

I think he has to figure out how to attack it and then use the resources at his disposal, which are essentially unlimited, to get after it.

I'll add that Mack needs to stop handcuffing himself to in-state players when the depth or talent is not as good. Go out of state early in the process and get kids on campus as early as you can. Screw this kicking the tires in January bullshit.

More personnel means you can stay in contact with more players and evaluate players more effectively. This is a no brainer but he has to get after it and make it a reality.

  • Bobby, one of your best pieces since the inception of this site.

I hope it comes to fruition. Texas is one of 10 programs that can take advantage of the rules and if they don't, it's idiotic. They can't be complacent...have to stay out in front.

  • Great article Bobby if we can move to a more scientific approach to recruiting than you can increase your chances of bringing in the right recruits.

  • Bobby, have you ever been offered a role with a team at any level? I'd imagine the answer is yes.

  • Bobby, really good writing. Some of the best I've seen concerning advances in recruiting. I always think my subscription price is worth the mone9y, but this article completely paid up this months cost.

I worked for the team in the video department as an undergrad. We filmed practices, games, cut coach's scout video, etc.

In a nutshell, that's what I believe. I also feel like you should almost always leverage any advantages you have to their fullest extent.

  • How important will the spring game be this year?

  • The first step taken should be hiring Bobby to get this mess straightened out............best ideas I've heard in awhile. Inside OR outside the program.

  • Very interesting article Bob. Good points.

  • Easily the best article I have read on this board. Many issues pulled together very nicely. However, you did not touch on what is for me every bit as critical as the points you raised. Although he was not a great talent evaluator, when Mushcamp left an edge left the program that attracted kids. Kids who like defense want to play for a fiery guy and a guy who demands the most out of them. The current DC has neither the edge nor the cred to attract top flight defensive talent. In my opinion, he must be replaced to maximize the other advantages we have.

Not sure I get your drift.

But it won't be on ESPN like OU's and A&M's. Instead, it'll be on a network too few people receive allowing for other teams to receive greater media attention.

  • Bobby and team,

That was a very well written article and very precise! I wish you could personally fax this VFR direct to Mack and staff. They need to see this, if not working towards these changes behind the scenes. Good job guys!

  • " This is not a place for old guys to go and serve out the final days of their career."
The above statement not only fits the recruiting coordinator but it is equally important for the HEAD COACH.

  • Mack should hire Gerry H. I am serious.

    Should be repeated. Again.

Individual coaches will come and go. I'm talking about systematic improvement.

  • "The first hire should be a personnel director ... "

What's Vinny Cerrato doing these days? He's both good ol' boy and someone with chops - 4 consecutive No. 1 classes from 89-92 (I believe) at Notre Dame, and he's been someone Mack has consulted with in the past.

    John Haynsworth

  • Awesome article, I totally agree we need more science in the recruiting area. Everyone laughed at the Oakland A's when they first started doing this, until they started replicating it.

  • Bobby.....outstanding read!!! I appreciate the fact that you don't have burnt orange blinders on.....I only hope that the decision makers will read this without their's on!! Can't say how enough the issues of constantly being proactive in ALL areas of recruiting has to become paramount!!

Interesting you say that. I was just reading this on the Washington Post and here is an interesting couple of paragraphs:

"Then Long asked Cerrato if he has had overtures from NFL teams to get back in the game since his departure from the Skins.

“I had a chance to go back,” Cerrato said. “What was it, last year, 12 months ago, 14 months ago? Something like that. Called me like three times. I didn't want to go. I didn't want to go into that situation. If I ever did it again, I'd want to go back to a situation that I enjoyed the people that I was gonna be with, it was gonna be fun. Because I don't have to go back, I don't need to go back. It's not something that I have to do financially. I don't have to do it. And if I go back, it's gonna be to a situation that I want to go back to, people that I enjoy working for and I want to go work with and have fun with and go win with.”

    Like, any current examples?

“There would be only one to intrigue me to go back, just because it's a good friend,” he said. “If it wasn't Notre Dame it'd be Texas, just because of Mack Brown. And it wouldn't be because of Texas; it'd be because of Mack Brown. If Mack Brown was at North Carolina, I'd say North Carolina. Because of my relationship with Mack Brown, he and I see the same things. So that would be a guy that I would enjoy. I like him, I like the way he coaches, I've consulted for him. That would be somebody that I would have fun with and I could work for, and I wouldn't mind doing it.”

  • I remember talking to you guys about the personal evaluation staff.
Since money is not an issue at Texas this should not be a problem.
The only thing getting in the way is ego.
And no this doesn't mean hire Todd McShay.
