How Texas Can Improve Recruiting -- Ways to avoid slide on trail

Texas is limping to the finish of this recruiting cycle. To avoid this becoming a trend there are certain things the Horns must do to stay relevant on the recruiting trail.

  • Win some big games and I believe most of the problems will cure themselves.

Winning will help you more easily attract recruits, but it won't necessarily help you attract the right recruits. That is a proven fact.

Texas has an opportunity, as every program does, to make evaluation more of a science. They need to embrace that opportunity and not try to do it how it's always been done.

Lazy solutions do not solve complex problems. Texas won the MNC in 2005 and 3 of the next 4 classes were the worst 3 in Mack Brown's history as a coach and worse than most of Mackovic's. Sorry.

That's my point. Winning games help you win the recruits you want but it doesn't improve the evaluation process, which is the most important aspect of recruiting in the first place.

  • I believe we now have the definitive "white paper" on how to take Longhorn football to the next level. This has to be done in the next 60 days, otherwise you limp through another recruiting cycle and then we focus on 2016 or 2017 as the next window.

Frankly, I fear that the trevails of the AD and the department will consume the time and energy of the AD just to try and survive. If any more problems pop up, this entire program will be gripped in chaos and fear and rendered impotent.

The future of the program is at hand. Do we stare at the beast or slay it?

  • I agree with much of this, I do think there is a major flaw. I think Mack made a horrific error in anointing Muschamp the HCIW. The move placed an expiration date on Mack. That is something that can not be taken away and it will always be used against Texas. Whether Texas wins 6 or 12 opposing coaches will say Mack is leaving. That will make going outside of Texas harder. I know you can not really say get a new coach, but I think Texas will have a rough spot until someone can sit in front of a kid and his family and say I plan on watching you graduate. Even if 80% of the coaches say that knowing it is BS. Just harder for Mack to pull that off.

  • Great article.

I know it's a new rule. But have you heard how any other programs are planning to take advantage of the opportunity to add staff devoted to scouting/personnel?

All of the suggested changes I mentioned have no bearing on how long Mack stays. All of these are positives and carry forward over the long haul.

Yep. More personnel is absolutely on the way.

While it will definitely help it's not something we can solely depend on. Bobby nailed it. Texas has got to be proactive rather than reactive if we're to get this turned around.

Bobby - easily one of the best pieces i've read in a while. Great article!

  • If I were Coach Mack Brown, the first thing I would do tomorrow after all the recruits are signed up is hire Mr. Burton to implement the suggestions outlined in this article. No, I think this afternoon.

Great constructive criticism delivered in a very professional tone.

I understand that and completely agree, but I am saying the uncertainty at the top for the program is going to effect recruiting. Even if Texas makes all the changes you suggest that issue will remain. It is not a slam at Mack. It is just an acceptance that uncertainty, whether real or perceived, is going to hinder recruiting. Does not matter to the kids that grew up in Longhorn pajamas, but it does to those not born into the tribe.

  • Excellent analysis, Bobby. I have to think that some of your points have already occurred to Mack Brown. I think we sometimes fail to remember what a truly great recruiting innovator he was from the mid-90's through the "oughts."

With the change of the recruiting landscape emphasizing Sophomore and Junior players, Mack seems to have been caught by surprise in the evaluation and tactical areas of this brave new world of what I call "the casual commitment."

Truly the 3 keys to success in the future are Evaluation, Evaluation, Evaluation--from multiple angles and on several levels.

    Thanks!!

    Lawhorn

  • I'll add that Mack needs to stop handcuffing himself to in-state players when the depth or talent is not as good. Go out of state early in the process and get kids on campus as early as you can. Screw this kicking the tires in January bullshit.
