Horns hitting coach

  • For those wanting a quality hitting coach who is a good teacher how about Rudy Jaramillo? Would he take a cut since the Cubs will be paying him...........plus can he recruit?

The best coaches are usually players who were smart but not very good. They learn how to teach...............Ted Williams is the first that comes to mind. Best hitter (maybe) of the century but a terrible manager................

Love Bagwell's as a player...........he is my all time favorite. He has the approach at the plate you want in your hitters........outstanding OBP, high average, power and an RBI machine. But I don't think he takes a college job (or any job) he could have stayed as the Astros hitting coach but didn't want to be away from his family.............

Wow. You are naive. That doesn't make him a bad person. A lot of guys were doing it including Bagwell. He blew up to Popeye size arms in a couple of years, then after the scandal hit, he immediately shrunk back down to his normal size. Bagwell was an outstanding player and individual, but he was on juice. Andy Pettite has impeccable integrety and character, but he took roids to help with injury and recovery, and he admitted it. Use of the juice was rampant and there is little doubt that Bagwell was on it.

I really don't think you know what you are talking about.............before you and GoHorn make an accusation, know something about the subject and have proof.

In addition the thread is about a Texas hitting coach not Jeff Bagwell taking something............hijack

  • How about Keith Moreland? Knows how to coach hitting, UT alumni, former MLB player, led the majors in hitting, knows how to win, well respected and admired. What more can you ask for?

I wonder what he makes as a Cubs announcer? An assistant coach at the college level is 250,000 tops I would think. However you are correct. He bleeds orange and was a hell of a hitter.

  • Choice #1 is Tom Emanski. I don't think there's any debate there. Then...

    [Big gap]

    ....All other choices.

  • Based on the thread title, my initial thought was that some of the football players were going "Matt Davis" on a coach.

I see what you did there...well done my friend.

Good lord, I still remember those commercials by Emanski touting his videos that would make you a better ball player.

No proof but Baggwell was juiced up. My stance comes from playing and working in the same circle, late 90's.

  • I worked in the service industry during the bags years and he was a steady client. I have no proof but I think he did them. Still a great guy and class act but he got big quick and shrunk down even quicker. You just don't see that type of chane in grown men without some sort of help.

    Tower_Orange

  • Probably not going to convince anybody but thnk about it...he didn't get bigger until after his MVP year (in 94 I think, shortened by the strike) and, being a fan, I want to believe he worked out like a fiend because he was serious about the game & it was his job & livelihood. Then he started getting smaller because his shoulder was in such bad shape he couldn't lift anymore. The shoulder was the reason he retired. I can sympathize because my shoulder is the same way.

  • From the AAS - Kirk Bohls column this morning:

    7. Arkansas could win a title but might lose a coach, because Todd Butler is under consideration as a candidate to become Texas' new hitting coach, along with Rice's Mike Taylor and former Longhorn second baseman and volunteer assistant coach Tommy Nicholson, an assistant at Sacramento State who helped raise that team's batting average 50 points this season. Texas will also look at hitting coaches for South Carolina — Chad Holbrook, a former national assistant coach of the year and a top 10 national recruiter — and Arizona, whose Matt Siegel served at TCU for three years and helped make the Wildcats the fourth-best hitting team in the country. Butler, 45, a former star at Oklahoma, appears to be the favorite. Look for Texas to hire Tommy Harmon's replacement by early July. In addition, Longhorn pitching coach Skip Johnson is expected to receive a raise from his $125,000 to somewhere in the range of $160,000 to $200,000.

Mike Taylor would be a huge get. Played for him as well and I can't speak highly enough for him as a coach and a person. Really fun guy to play for, definitely a player's coach. He's also an excellent recruiter, especially in the Houston area.
