"Don't know. Never had one" -- D. Royal-Mack Brown how to coach a team after a losing season

    Bruce7

  • Sloppily played game with lots of empty trips down the floor.
It was helpful that TAMU was dysfunctional.
TAMU's Davis swinging his elbows should have been a flagrant but color man Gottilieb
said he didn't connect. THe spirit of the rule is to prevent catastrophic injury and in the past
just swinging the elbows drew the call (remember last year with Gary Johnson).
Anyhow the game was ugly between 2 teams with random offenses.
I suppose any win is a good win.
Just wonder if we could've won the game without J'Covan playing. It's a question of do you want J'covan Brown at 60% for the rest of the year or let him sit out and heal and be 90%.
Next 3 games are going to be toughest part of the schedule.

    TXbravehorn

  • The question.........can we go 1-2 over the next 3 games? If we go 0-3 its going to be very hard on this young team.

I posted the other night.............no matter how ugly I keep counting to 10. We have 8 to go........

  • I wonder how many years it's going to take to put TAMU back on the presesan Hoops schedule?
Easier to do it in basketball than football. Make it a neutral site game in Houston, Dallas or San Antonio,
If the schools don't meet for a period of years than you know there's bad blood and hard feelings. Then we migh have to wait until the ADs Dodds and Byrnes are gone.

    TXbravehorn

  • After last night, I hope we never play them again. That was simply ugly.

Despite all the freshman bravado after ISU, it is clear that the offense is just lost without Brown on the floor, and posing a real threat. The chances of winning at either MU or KSU are so slim, I would like for Brown to sit out both games, and come back for the home game against KU.

Not going to win the way they've been shooting. They're going to have to beat the group of MU, BU, KU and KSU a couple of times to get to 10, and they'll need the quality wins anyway.

KU is probably the best chance. Robinson is a beast, but Tyshawn Taylor is a turnover machine and after that, Texas matches up pretty well.

  • I'm anxious to see how this team plays against the better Big 12 teams. Texas has done what it's needed to do to beat poor Big 12 teams the last two times out. I want to see if this team has the ability to play up to the level of its opponent, or if it just is what we've seen over the last few games.

I'm not sure about being able to go 1-2.

If its going to happen I think it will be Kansas in Austin for the victory. I don't see this team winning at Missouri or Kansas state.

    Dave,
I think it's the level of the opponent. This is the biggest division of
power Ive seen in a long time in the Big 12. After Baylor, K-State,
Missouri, and KU, there is a huge drop-off. In years' past, Tech or
Iowa St. or Okie St. would pull off a big upset at home. I just don't
see that happening this year. I'm hoping we are the best of the
bottom feeders, but Iowa St. has a very experienced transfer team
with a decent amount of talent. The mayor is a decent coach, so
6th is probably the best we can finish this season, although Barnes
is getting a lot out of this young bunch on the defensive end. I still
see us between 6-12 and 8-10 with hopefully an N.I.T. bid.

I pretty much follow that line of thinking. I expect this team to struggle against the big dogs in the Big 12 this year, but I'm anxious to see how they perform. I'll be looking for signs of improvement from the beat down that was the UNC game.

I say Missouri because they both lack a height advantage.

  • What is amazing to me is that we all counted on Mych having a great year for us to have any chance and he has done nothing and Texas is still winning. Wonder if he is ever going to show up in his "one season" here.

Agree that they match up better with Missouri and Kansas. Baylor should pound this team. K-State also is bigger and should benefit from that.

So far ... I don't see it. I really don't see him leaving after one year. If he does, I think he's in for a rude awakening at the draft.

  • You just never know with kids that start out on NBA radars. We've had more than a couple we felt should stay and they've been fine in terms of how the draft went for them.

If he returns, Texas will be LOADED next year. Same goes for JCB. I think Brown is going to be gone though.

That's what I'm getting at. Cory Joseph at least had a couple of big shots on his resume. Kabongo doesn't shoot it that well, doesn't get to the basket consistently -- that's what made TJ Ford great. He's a pretty good passer but not a dazzling one -- again, like TJ was.

Maybe he can get a deal. But the rules have changed... he doesn't get to talk for a month and then decide. He only has until mid-April. He has a couple of months to get a lot better, but I was watching him last night specifically with the draft in mind. He's not good enough yet at this level.

Is Brown athletic enough to play in the NBA. He is a hell of a scorer but I wonder if he will not be such a defensive liability that you just can't put him on the floor for many mins........

Let me spell it out for you. We will not play aTm in any sport any time soon. You don't need to read the tea leaves. It's the plain truth and the vast majority of the longhorn base supports it. You are correct there are no scheduling problems in basketball, but scheduling is irrelevant. The scheduling "excuse" for football was just DeLoss trying to be polite and not crap on aTm in public. The fact that Dolla Bill called him on his excuse just shows how out of touch he is. I believe Rick Barnes said it best at Big 12 media days when asked the same question you just asked, "No, we will not be playing Texas A&M. My out of conference schedule is based on marquee matchups. If I want to play the SEC, I will call Kentucky or Florida."

As for last night, it was an ugly, ugly game and didn't show much hope that Texas can be quality teams. I am shocked at just how bad aTm is. Some positives: When Barnes was interviewed pre-half, he wasn't his usual grumpy self that he's been during post game interviews the past few weeks ripping the team. I am hopeful that he's realized this group of young players needs at least some positive reinforcement. I'm also very impressed with J'Covan. First half I watched him stand on the perimeter unable to move for whole possessions and really thought he was done for the night after coming out. That he was able to put several athletic drives together at the end of the game was very impressive.
