Horns draw Beavers in Alamo Bowl -- an early look at the game

It's not where they'd hoped to be, but the No. 23-ranked Longhorns will play No. 13 Oregon State in the Valero Alamo Bowl to end the 2012 season.

  • I'll settle for the same results as the 2007 game vs ASU.

  • Mack would be "excited" to play in the godaddy.com bowl against Arkansas state too. He would actually try to spin it as a "great accomplishment by our kids and coaches" and would claim it to be a "big step forward for our program."

They would naturally be facing one of the greatest teams to ever come out of the sun belt conference, I am certain. Which, of course, would have him "scared to death." But that is okay because now, when the season is all but over, we are going to have the "toughest practices of the year" and emphasize results. Novel concept --- Lets get tough and demand results before Rome is burning' maybe? Just once in all these years that might be a decent idea to consider...

Of course, I agree with Mack. I am "scared to death" anytime our defense is on the field now, too......

I'm also scared to death that he actually believes the crap he's spewing and honestly thinks he has any clue how to get consistent effort and toughness out of his team. Maybe, in order for him to go out on the up note he insists upon, we can secretly hire someone to coach the team and work the mechanisms behind the scenes. Mack gets to save face and keep the title and deal with the pr, provided he promises to stay the hell away from actually making any decisions.

Took me a long time to get to this stage. He is a good man and has done great things, but he has to open his eyes. I honestly don't think he has it in him to consistently demand the effort from players or coaches that it will take to turn this around. He's too nice --- it is engrained in him too deeply --- and he's getting pantsed because of it. We have a brief window now to turn this thing around before the job gets a whole lot harder. Another disappointing year next season will likely add a minimum of a couple of years to the rebuilding process. I wish I could believe Mack could do it. But I don't.

  • Jeff, for the record, the Horns are 21-16 during the past 3 years and not 18-16 as has been reported several times recently on this site. They were 5-7 in 2010 and 8-5 in 2011, and are 8-4 in 2012.

  • I am shocked that there wasn't a headline that read "RECRUITS BAIL ON TEXAS AFTER LOSS".
None of these kids are coming to play in Austin and be a Longhorn so they can say they played for Mack Brown! They're coming here to be a Texas Longhorn, because in Texas, that has always been the crowning accomplishment of a great high school career....a football scholarship to the University of Texas. Every other school was a "second choice". With what has happened over the last three years under Mack Brown, that is changing quickly. The Longhorn "Brand" does not stand for what it used to stand for in the past. If this mediocrity is allowed to continue, we will soon see schools like Texas A&M, TCU, Oklahoma St. and Baylor become as competitive in the recruiting game as Oklahoma is with the Longhorns. That is a serious problem that will show up on the score board in the next 3-5 years. What great recruit would want to come to Texas and play for a 6-6, 7-5, 8-4 Longhorn team topped off with an Alamo Bowl appearance? Give me a break! If the Red McCombs and the rest of the "money guys" can't see this now, they are going to see their investment in the Longhorn program pay very little dividends.....good, maybe that's what will get their attention! It's great that Mack is a "good guy" and they can pick him up in their Lear jets and go play golf at Augusta, fly back in to Austin have slap each other on back over ribs and brisket and toss back a few Jack and cokes and spew BS to each other about how good the program is progressing. Meanwhile, we've lost 4 conference games for 3 years straight, which hasn't happened since the 1930s and we're going to San Antonio for a piss poor bowl game......AGAIN!
Yeah, Mack, I'm sure the guys are just overwhelmed!!! Guess who isn't? The fans and future recruits!

  • It is SO shocking that the sunshine patriots are once again deluding themselves that they speak for "fans and future recruits".

Perhaps you could explain to us how one should have a good feeling about a fprogram that is now 11-15 in conference play the last 3 years, and 4-8 in home games the past 2 years.

At some point one comes to the proverbial fork in the road, and has to choose to either (1) ignore the ugly facts and be satisfied with being part of the great Longhorn Nation, or (2) realize how poorly our program is actually doing and demand better.

  • we are 11-15 because of the miscues in QB evaluation, though this year you might look at the defense as the leading factor in our record. That said, I will always root for the Longhorns, and never run down Mack Brown. He is a Longhorn through and through.

Yes, I didn't do the math right. That's my fault. It still doesn't change the fact that being 21-16 over the last three combined seasons isn't where Texas should be.

  • (Mack voice)Mike Riley has been a coach in the NFL and has done a good job at Oregon State. His passing offense is 14th in the country and their running game is better than what the stats show. So it s!cares ya to death that the light will come on for their rushing offense.(Mack voice)

Some of us (apparently a minority around here) will never waver in our support for the Horns. It is not only about wins and losses. Mack Brown has more than earned the right to decide on his own when it's time for him to move on down the road. It's not just about the last three years. Look at the big picture, instead of just a snap shot. Many here are spoiled, and the number one reason for that is Mack Brown.
