Hoop Dreams -- Long road to UT for freshman Ioannis Papapetrou

Ioannis Papapetrou's path has taken him from Greece to Florida and now to Austin where he'll take that first step in realizing his dream of playing college basketball.

  • I think we will all be glad that Papi came to Texas when he finishes up in a few years. Just think what it must have been like to leave your home and family, not to mention your culture, at such a young age - all for a dream. He may or may not become a great player at Texas, but in many ways, he has already succeeded. I think stuff like this is why l like Longhorn basketball so much. It seems that you get to know the players a little better, for better or worse sometimes. Maybe it is because there are fewer players, or perhaps it is just because it is easier to see their facial expressions and body language a little better, especially if you are lucky enough to get to see them play multiple times in person.

Thanks for the article, Dave. By the way, there are two articles over at Barking Carnival (attached below), one on the freshmen and one on the sophomores, with embedded articles profiling the individual players. None of the player profiles are as good as this one, though. ;)

  • It was fun talking to him. Wound up getting a lot of one-on-one time with him at the availability a few weeks back and it was cool to get his whole story of coming to America and everything.

Good job! Will we be seeing similar stories on any of the other players?

  • Great article Dave. I'm more excited about Papapetrou's development than any other storyline on this team.

  • From that point on, Papi's goal wasn't to come to America to play in the NBA. It was to get to the states to play in front of those passionate college hoops fans. Those crazies that aren't found in NBA arenas. The ones you can only find standing, jumping and screaming in student sections of college arenas all over America.

Passionate hoop fans? Did he come to a home game before committing?

  • I'm excited to see him (and the rest of the team) in person tonight. From the couple of YouTube clips I've seen, he also seems like a great teammate.

If anyone else wants the chance to see him in person tonight, let me know because I have an extra (free) ticket (a colleague just backed out after his wife informed him they have other plans).

  • Starting five according to the Statesman:

    Jonathan Holmes
    Ioannis Papapetrou
    Prince Ibeh
    Sheldon McClellan
    Javan Felix

Apparently no news on Myck yet. I am not holding my breath. Raised eyebrow but not surprised that The Prince is starting over Ridley. Barnes historically starts others over heralded incoming freshmen. Maybe it is intended to let Ridley see the game from the bench before he comes in, or maybe it is a motivational move. I would euphemistically bet that Ridley gets more minutes than The Prince, but then again, What do I know? ;)

l'm sure that's a question that'll be asked after the game.

FYI, Jeff will be there on behalf of Hookem.com tonight.

  • Thanks Dave, enjoyed the read. Do you have stories on the other guys?

It would be great to have links to stories on the other guys if you have them. Kind of of a running team thread series.

Probably not (though I'd like to). I got a lot of unplanned one-on-one time with Papi and was able to have a long talk with him about his backstory. I probably won't get an opportunity to talk to a player for that long about things unrelated to this basketball season.

  • He's an impact winning player. A guy that will help Texas win a lot of games the next four years IMO.
