I'm a member of that board as well. Is one or the other going away?

The other board is transferring here so we can all be under one roof.

  • I guess I need more information. I had never heard of Hookem.com, how does merging another message board really "game change"? How does propping up a dying media form (newspaper) improve things? I never get information from sports pages anymore. Its old well before it hits my doorstep.

It doesn't bother me, but I can't figure out why this changes anything. Maybe having more journalists invovled will give us more content, so that's good I guess.

Actually, I'm trying to convince him to get a handle and contribute.

I told him how loved he typically is on the Longhorn message boards.

I can tell you first hand that the Statesman brings a great deal to the table.

Always the first thing to consider is exactly what you already have mentioned - the people.

Alan and Dave are both good guys and hard workers. Those two guys will be covering the team full time. Previously, we were using Jeff doing part recruiting and part team coverage. That obviously changes with this development.

Then there are things like photography and working together with other Statesman editorial staff that also are a benefit.

Plus, whether you read the paper or not, the Statesman and its website, Statesman.com, are considered one of the best sports pages in any major college town or capitol city and its website is one of the most-read of its kind.

Unlike many "old guard" newspaper companies, the Statesman has been forward-thinking about the Web going back to the 90s.

So the Statesman, from editorial to management, are strong believers in the web and they are supporting this from the very top.

But you ask a really good question.

In the end, what does it all mean to a customer?

    * It means more news on the Longhorns, on the team and on recruiting.

    * It means we will have more people who cover the team and recruiting who are capable of answering and discussing sports on this message board.

    * It means we will have more photos, videos, etc.

  • Bobby and Gerry,

Congratulations on a very nice addition to the site. I've canceled my sub to another longhorn site that I've been a member of for a decade, and will sign up here during the next month. I really like the discussion here, the content and the board's on-topic focus.

Thanks for the kind words. The future here and at 247Sports.com is bright and I'll do all I can to continue bringing you guys the best coverage possible. I know everyone else will do the same too.

  • Hi Guys. Just came here from the old Hookem.com site. Looks like a great board here. Looking forward to the interaction

    77Horn

  • Very excited for you guys. I think this is a great business venture and I am glad to be a supporter.

    MBarnett

  • Thanks for the reply Bobby. More access to the program, if this leads to that, would be outstanding. If there is any way this leads to more coverage of the team, particularly in the fall camp period, this would be game changer. I hate how Bellmont and Mack have closed off practices to the media and fans.

I would love more in depth coverage of the team, beyond information we get out of spin/b.s. mondays.

  • Bobby/Gerry,

What I hope more than anything is coverage of the other UT sports. Particularly baseball bu volleyball kicks ass at UT and while most Internet sites only cover football and basketball, the statesman typically covers all of them.

  • Not sure how much value the AAS value brings (other than the domain name) but Trubow has been great and is a fantastic addition.

Alan, will you continue to cover baseball as well?

Also bonus points for me calling this (partially) yesterday morning.

  • Hey! I am here from hookem.com and am very excited about the changes. I look forward to getting to know the new faces (screen names) as well as continuing to interact with each of the people that I have over the last 18 months since the start of hookem.

In the 18 months, we have seen a baseball team and a football team get so close to bringing home the bling but have fallen just short and subseqently seen the football and basketball programs fall on their faces. This has created endless opportunities for chatter!

Let's hope the next 18 months are just as fun and that we can double the 5 wins that we got in 2010..

    FYI... OU sucks!

  • Sancho,

Bobby has expressed interest in making sure we have, at the very least, weekly coverage of UT's non-revenue sports. I'm happy to take that beat and will definitely be filling everybody in on Texas' volleyball team.

I'm not going to make a promise I can't keep and say that I'll be at as many baseball games as I was in the past.

But I can promise you that we will have plenty of baseball coverage, and we will definitely have premium information when it comes to the the baseball team.

Also, the Statesman is hiring somebody to replace me, and that person will be at the games. We'll make sure you have easy access to all of the Statesman's baseball stories, too.

If you're looking for baseball, it should work out that you can come to this site and get more Longhorn baseball coverage than you ever have before.

  • good news on several fronts:

    1) more staff
    2) more credibility
    3) chance to communicate more directly to Bohls my feelings about his lack of support for McCoy's hiesman
