  • My friend is stating, incorrectly, that Aaron Ross was a poor punt returner. His argument centers around Ross being a fumbler. I've looked for the stats, but can't find any on his punt return fumbles. I say he had 3 or less for his career, he says more. Can anyone help me out?

  • His biggest fumble was after the first drive against USC. Other than that, he was a fantastic punt returner at Texas.

  • Your friend sounds like he sucks, and is apparently stupid. I'm guessing he's an ou fan?

  • I can't say this about many former UT players, if any, but I am afraid to share my thoughts on Aaron Ross while at UT. Anybody else out there? Or is everybody blinded by The Thorpe Award?

Do you mean as a person or player? Because I didn't know him as a person, but he was a really good football player.

  • Ross was extremely sure handed. Yes the USC fumble was huge but he did punt returns because of his Shipley like hands. I thought he was decent as a returner, but great hands was the tradeoff.
Fast forward to the special teams headed by none other that MacWhorter. Curtis Brown and Aaron Williams both had terrible hands, fumbled on a regular basis and were mediocre at returning. Brown had lobbied and whined about needing to do returns to elevate his draft status, so in spite of sucking at returns, MacWhorter let him keep the job. Those are the kind of personnel decisions the staff used to make, just like "he's bled for the program", "he's a coach on the field", etc.
Overall Ross was pretty good and he did take one back.
You might consider how you evaluate friends. Yours talks out his arse. He is not a real Longhorn fan or he would know better.

Definitely player. I don't know him as a person but he seems like a very nice guy. I always thought he played too conservatively in college and gave up too many 8-10 yard receptions.

And when I say I'm afraid to share my thoughts, it's because I know they are in the minority when it comes to him. Usually I am in the majority about UT players, past and present, whether it's good or bad.

You are probably in the minority around here thinking that about Ross, but at least a couple of nfl draft analyses point out some negatives (which is fair, they also pint out a lot of positives). For example, this one seems to agree with you (from NFL Draft Scout, http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/historical/437049) :
"Negatives: Lacks field intelligence and will bite on pump fakes and misdirection … Has a lean frame with marginal playing strength and needs to improve his training room habits (does what is asked, but needs structure) … Struggled with academics earlier and might have problems digesting a complicated playbook … Lacks the upper body strength and hand usage to disengage from blocks … Willing in run support, but will get walled off and washed out of the play in attempts to plug the inside lanes … Marginal tackler who prefers to take a side or grab rather than face up, wrap and secure … Generates a lot of pass interference penalties due to his penchant of constantly grabbing at the receiver's jersey heading down field … Lacks an ideal feel for seeing the plays develop and will need time to learn the proper techniques of diagnosing and reading keys … Has the speed to mirror receivers, but fails to generate the punch to press or the placement to reroute … When he uses a shuffle-and-bail technique, he is slow to come out of his breaks … Liability in zone coverage, as he is late to locate the ball and lacks a good feel for handling the switch-off … Needs to take better angles in attempts to close on the ball … Plays with good aggression, but will get out of control at times and then struggles to recover … Too much of a risk taker, doing a poor job of keeping plays in front of him."

  • Aaron Ross was a very good punt returner. May not be better than Jordan Shipley or Nathan Vasher but he was plenty good.

  • I know this is off the topic of whether Ross was a good punt returner but remember how good Michael Huff was at blocking punts?
