Has there ever been a Heisman race this weird?

  • Almost all of the preseason contenders/favorites aren't even mentioned anymore, some of the early players were just flashes in the pan (Geno Smith), the more recent ones have all had some pretty poor performances (Kenjon Barner, Collin Klein), and to top it off the favorite is a freshman. When's the last time something this crazy has happened?

  • The year Troy Smith won it was completely unspectacular. I don't remember the dynamics of the race though.

It's definitely been a down year in terms of standout players and I'm starting to wonder if some non-traditional positions could get some looks (i.e. Robert Woods).

I would say Marqise Lee before Woods. But he won't get any love because of USC's dissapointing record.

  • What would have been awesome is if Oregon decided to put DAT in at DB because of the rash of injuries. If he made plays that would be crazy heisman consideration.

And probably the biggest competition for the freshman is a LB.

But the reality is that there's never before been a freshman that has done what Manziel is doing. At least not from what I've seen.

Hopefully, putting aside where he goes to school, most here would agree he's pretty amazing to watch.

That may be true, but most of his competition has fallen off a cliff. He may back into having the Heisman trophy just like Alabama is gonna back into another National Championship game. While he definitely has earned a lot of hype, I don't think anyone deserves that kind of award when they still have two or three years to build on it.

  • Mantei Teo and Marquise Lee are the two most dynamic players in college football, Manziel is up there as well. I just can't give it to someone who put up stats against two FCS schools. 10 TDs came in these 2 games.

That said, if Teo has a big game and ND rolls USC, he will win.

I could justify giving it to both of those players. Even if Manziel and Marcus Mariota switched jerseys and Manziel didn't play for A&M, I still wouldn't give him the trophy because he's still a freshman.

  • One thing people don't realize is that Manziel could leave after next year. I know he isn't a great "NFL qb" prospect but he could leave after that RS sophmore year.

If he leaves early, jail is a more likely destination than the NFL.

Adrian Peterson breaking his collarbone pretty much put the Heisman on Smith's doorstep.

  • I'm shocked a guy like Tavon Austin isn't getting more pub. I guess being on a team that has lost 5 in a row will kill any chance at being relevant.

  • 2007 was nuts too.

Tebow was basically defaulted the Heisman when Dixon blew his knee. Chase Daniel was a Heisman finalist for crying out loud.

Agreed. If ever there was a year a defensive player could win the Heisman this feels like it.
