Gray chasing history

2012 Texas commit Johnathan Gray has accomplished a lot in three years at Aledo. With one more year to go, the running back has a shot at some of the state's biggest records.

  • Gray starts off the season against Stephenville on Friday and the Yellow Jackets have had the best success of any team over a period of time trying to slow down the five-star prospect.

In 2009 (sophomore season), Grad had 20 carries for 116 yards and three TD's in the season opening 20-16 Aledo win. They met again in the first round of the 4A playoffs with Aledo winning 26-23. Gray had 31 totes for 173 yards and a TD in that game.

Last year, Stephenville was one of two teams to hold the 5-foot-10, 205-pounder under 100-yards in the last 31 games. Gray posted 84 yards on 19 carries in the 20-3 Aledo win. In the playoffs, an 18-10 Aledo win, Gray had 109 yards on 31 carries.

Friday should be a physical start to the 2011 season, just as it has been the last two seasons.

  • Gray is going to absolutely destroy that TD record.

Though I'd rather he not contend for the carries and thereby the yardage record.

No doubt, he would need the best scoring season ever to get the national TD record for those wondering.

I'm with you on carries and yards. I would like to see him limited to 15'ish totes against teams not named Stephenville, Weatherford and Lake Travis. Playoffs, of course, have to win.

New stadium, 2009 I believe. It will definitely be a sellout, but I would guess it seats 8,000-9,000'ish SRO.

Man, I would go if I were you. The game Friday at Stephenville will be a game that makes high school football in Texas so special IMO.

  • Gerry,

A complete sidebar, but in doing that research did you see how many career carries K. Hall had? It's hard to believe he's about 3K yards above the 8K plateau most runners top out at and is not top 5 in carries. He must have been something to see as a prep running back.

I'll look up Hall's career numbers if I have time today. I know he played 12 game seasons and he played QB, so he didn't have the high volume of carries as some other guys.

He had 4,000+ yards in 12 games as a senior. Played QB and safety sparingly. Returned kicks too.
