Gray, a two-time Gatorade Texas football player of the year

  • Johnathan Gray, the Longhorns’ incoming freshman running back from Aledo, has been named the 2012 Gatorade Male High School Athlete of the Year, it was announced Tuesday.

Gray, a two-time Gatorade Texas football player of the year, won the award over candidates from every state plus the District of Columbia. He helped lead Aledo to three straight Class 4A Division II state titles, and last season rushed for 3,886 yards and a state-record 65 touchdowns.

Gray is the second Longhorn signee in four years to be named the Gatorade male high school athlete of the year. Lake Travis quarterback Garrett Gilbert, who has transferred to Southern Methodist University, won the 2009 honor.

The 5-foot, 11-inch, 202-pound Gray amassed numerous records and honors in his high school career. His 205 career touchdowns is a national record, and he ranks second in national prep history with 1,232 career points. His 10,889 total rushing yards rank second in Texas history behind Sugar Land’s Kenneth Hall.

  • Its a darn shame Kelvin Taylor is going to run through all of his records this season. Ken Hall's too.

Just too bad Taylor gets to count his 8th grade year when he played varsity...sigh.

  • That is ridiculous counting those yards. He gets 5 years versus everyone else in USA 4 years. What the hell is anyone thinking (State of Florida) allowing 8th graders to play with Juniors and Seniors. Someone is going to get killed or severely injured.

  • Imagine the yardage/TDs Gray would've had playing 1A ball.

Yeah I know its silly but it won't change that he will be listed at the top. He played varsity ball so they are legit yards. If Gray or any other kid was able to play varsity ball in the 8th grade the yards would still count. Now the level and quality of play he went against is the real issue if you ask me. Imagine if Gray played TAPPS. But regardless it wont change that he will be listed at the top. Probably should be an asterisk.

Its varsity ball so they are legit but there should be a question mark. I believe he is private school so they can do what they want.

  • I've had the opportunity to watch this kid almost every game of his high school career. Ready for him to be in Burnt Orange!
