Grading the Performance: Defense

    I would have given the defense a worse grade in the first half than a C, even though ISU only scored 7 points. Texas was giving up 6-7 yards per carry in the first half. That's not a grade of C to me.

    An anemic ISU offense marched into Texas territory four times in six possessions of the first half. These weren't fluky possessions either. They drove the ball on Texas each time.

    I wasn't really talking about the first half, but I agree, they didn't play well. I wouldn't argue a grade worse than a C, although my justification for a C was that while it wasn't always pretty, we stepped up when we needed to for the most part (I can't be too upset with holding a team to 7 points in a half.)

    The main reason why I responded to your initial post was because I didn't think it was fair to discredit our defense's 2nd half results to the extent that you did. Holding a team to zero points and under 70 yards in a half is dominant regardless of any play calling or personnel changes the ISU offense made.

    I think Fera is terrible. When he kicks, I hold my breath, even on extra points. The kid is a major disappointment.

    He's not terrible. He was 14 of 17 last year.

    I think he's just in a slump right now.

    If we continue the ridiculous stunts and mugging the next two games, TCU and K-State will run all over us. There was a play in the first half, that Whaley and Jackson (maybe Moore) stunted and left the entire middle open and ISU just ran through the vacated hole in the defense and Whaley had no chance to make a play.

  • I agree!! If he had made the field goal against WV I think we would have won the game. Doesn't look like Jordan is very dependable either. That puts us down to Rose!! He, obviously has the biggest leg and I would like to see him try a long field goal.

  • Bottom line....the defense still plays a lot worse than the talent level would indicate. Something is still wrong with this defense and needs a good coach to fix it. tcu, for example has only 3 star and lower talent plus playing a lot of freshmen and is still a much better defense. Inexcusable!

  • Bobby, you said 17 points...they far exceeded your expectations. In fact, they far exceeded the expectations of all of the staff who said 17 points except one at 20. Isnt it time to give credit where credit is due and admit that some of us are not good at evaluating defenses? cheers & hook em!
