Can anyone possibly explain just what happened with Adrian Phillips. I hope he rebounds next year. Kid looked like a rising star last year.

Maybe his shoulder is still bothering him and that is why he shies away from contact. I thought he was a rising star too.

I think his shoulder surgery has made him way to hesitant to be an effective striker. But that's just pure speculation. But he did go from a physical safety that can cover to a safety that lacks physicality and now looks lost.

More than just shying away from contact. seems all of his instincts are gone, and he is hardly in any type of position to make a play in the secondary.

There was a play against WVU where Byndom zoned off and Phillips was suppose to cut in front, Geno stared the slant down the whole time, all Phillips had to do was jump the route as was his assignment, instead he hesitated to long, Geno made the pass and Phillips ended up stumbling over his own feet as WVU score a TD.

  • Good:
Ash - biggest surprise by far
    Davis
    Gray

    Bad:
    Philips
Fera - injured I know, but nowhere near the hype

I have no idea what you people are surprised about with Byndom. Even when he was taking heat for the Ole Miss or WVU games, it was misplaced - Phillips and Thompson knocked him off of routes and tackles. Byndom's played fine. Were you expecting Deion Sanders level production?

Byndom's play the past 2 weeks has been exactly what Texas needs from him. I would say that of the 2 Corners, Diggs has been playing pretty poor football for the 2nd 3rd of the season forward.

Phillips isn't a safety. I would play him outside in nickel and dime packages.

    Ash by a mile

    This.

Good suprises besides Ash, would be Daniels on the second half of the season, the play of Case in limited duty, Macolm Brown at DT, the immediate impact of Daje Johnson, and Josh Turner in the secondary.

Bad suprises, the complete whiff of Adrian Phillips and Mykelle Thompson at safety, the first half of the season by Carrington Byndom, all other TEs besides Greg Daniels. The Interior of the OL, athough it's improved the second half of the season. Whaley being a non factor at DL for the most part. The linebacker play in general. The injuries to Jeffcoat and Hicks. The oft injured Malcolm Brown at RB and his inability to play hurt at all.

  • If we just talk about the last two games I'd say Espinosa is looking like he's coming on. Two pretty good defensive fronts and he's had two good games

I would agree with you in space but not head up. He still gets driven back into the backfield far too much for me.

He still doesn't get a surge from the line, but the last couple weeks he hasn't been getting driven back hardly at all either. I think it's progress and he's still just a RS SO I believe.

I'm going to go like this:

Offense Greg Daniels - biggest surprise David Ash - biggest breakthrough Mike Davis - best comeback

Defense Peter Jinkens - biggest surprise Cedric Reed - biggest breakthrough

On the other end of the stick 5. Chris Whaley 4. Adrian Phillips (moving in the right direction) 3. Mykkele Thompson (moving in the right direction) 2. Anthony Fera 1. Demarco Cobbs

I agree across the board other than probably replacing Whaley with Edmonds. Edmonds has been showing signs of getting it though.

Did he really or did you buy into Bobby's hype of the kid?

Yep, Espinosa is guy who can look very good with certain matchups...but can be heavily overmatched with others. That is why he seems so erratic...it's about the guy lining up across from him. As long as he doesn't get overpowered he's quick enough to make some blocks in space.

  • Ash has been outstanding this year vs. expectations and he's on a steep learning curve. Every week he gets better. Love where he's going as a player.

What's happened to Adrian Phillips is almost inexplicable.

  • Those not listing Ash as a positive surprise are forgetting the way most posters combed the boards over the spring and summer looking for any signs of completed passes. They are forgetting the assumed "game manager" upside hoped for by most. If you are one of the very few who predicted this kind of breakout season -- I don't remember a lot of that -- then I guess you're not surprised. I thought he'd be pretty good but not "carry the team on your shoulders and be counted on to win games when the defense is a horror show" good.

On defense, anyone not named Vaccaro, Okafor, Diggs or Malcom Brown has been a significant disappointment at one point or another, but Cobbs and Phillips have been the most consistently disappointing.

As for Malcolm Brown, I for one am willing to give him a break. He's always seemed like a good kid and I don't know that anyone should casually question his toughness without knowing for sure the extent of his injuries. Yes, sometimes someone gets hurt at the wrong time two consecutive years.

    Good -

    Mike Davis David Ash

    Bad -

Carrington Byndom Adrian Phillips Demarco Cobbs

I agree with this. Byndom has been decent in a couple of games but has looked almost as bad as Phillips and Cobbs, who have been consistently bad all season. There is no justification for Phillips of Cobbs to ever get off the bench since they cannot or will not tackle.
Davis and Ash have done well overall.

Where you watching last year, or just reading commentary? And I was high on the kid coming into his sophomore year. If you watched last year I don't see how you couldn't be excited about him getting more playing time coming into this year.

Doesn't make a lot of sense being that he was a guy going for the knock out blow early this year and not wrapping up

about the 5 most surprising players of 2012 for the Longhorns.

Lots of discussion but the two that came up in both a good and bad way were Greg Daniels and Adrian Phillips.

    Thoughts?

    Good----Case
    Bad------Phillips.

    Good Ash, Daniels

    Bad Cobbs, Philips

After saying this I would love to see Cobbs make a 4/1 play vs KSU to seal the game. Phillips same thing.
