I should have mentioned he was a walk- on.

Who's your son's friend? I just looked at their depth chart and I don't know which was a walk on.

I still think it's a difference. It's no skin off Patterson's back to keep a walk on since he doesn't cost anything. Mack has a lot of flaws, but he doesn't make empty promises to kids and burn bridges with high school coaches. I've never been very high on Patterson. I think he's an absolute scumbag.

  • Chip Kelly is a no go because of impending NCAA sanctions committed in the state of Texas.

Urban Meyer and Brian Kelly, I don't see happening.

Saban is unquestionably the best program builder in college football and can be bought.

Outside of that, to risk Texas on anyone other than Patterson, Gundy and Briles makes no sense to me.

Patterson and Gundy have both won bigger than anybody else on the list, have recruited Texas longer, are well liked by folks in the state more and have more head coaching experience than everyone else including Shaw, Strong, Franklin and whoever else you want to list.

If Will Muschamp would want to return or if Jimbo Fisher wanted to talk, then that might be two others worth consideration.

IMO, if you can't get Saban then you go for Patterson.

    He has earned a scholly.
Look, I just tried to point out varying feedback. I wasn't trying to discredit your info. Sorry if it landed that way.

This is where the next head coach decision is going to be difficult as it is not enough to be a hard nose, tough love type to get the head nod at Texas. You have to be TV ready and lined up to run a popularity contest. It's going to be a tough transition however and whenever it takes place.

No problem at all. I really am curious who the player is. I don't know their players well enough to know who came in as one of the 85 and who walked on, and I don't want to Google each senior.

You're making an a priori assumption that keeping Mack is not a risk itself. I think keeping Mack is actually a bigger risk than bringing in a guy like Charlie Strong.

Not Bobby, but imo that isn't a good enough reason. You know, two wrongs and all that..

It's not a reason at all. It's a factor in the calculation. Risk of keeping Mack > Risk of bringing in quality HC. Novelty has value in college football.

My problem with bringing in a guy like Strong, is that I don't think he's a sure-fire top coach. If we stick with Mack, we get to see who's available next year. Bringing in Strong means we're committing for at least three years to a roll of the dice.

I'm not making any prior assumption other than saying if Mack leaves, these are the candidates IMO.

"to risk Texas on anyone other than Patterson, Gundy and Briles makes no sense to me. "

The underlying assumption is that keeping Mack around is not as big a risk as bringing in someone other than these guys. I'm not suggesting anyone on my list is better than the above (though I'd pass on both Gundy and Briles personally). I'm simply suggesting that keeping Mack is a bigger risk than bringing in somebody new, even if it's not Saban or Patterson (the only two legitimate possibilities who are can't miss, imo).
