Recap for those of us who missed it please?

Gerry knocked it out of the park (no shock there)...

    - GH: Brown compares favorably with Beanie Wells
    - The holes pinching around the LOS is the toughest adjustment backs have to make going to college
    - Gerry and the guys talked about Steele's schedule and level of competition
    - Gerry mentioned Jaxon Shipley, Christian Westerman, Sedrick Flowers, Quandre Diggs and Steve Edmond as guys he really likes in the class

    Those are just some bulletpoints

Had a friend watch his video last night (guess there are some new ones out) and he said the style reminded him of Emmitt.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Emmitt more a 'cut back' runner and Wells more a straight ahead guy? Wonder IYHO, which one is closer.

The defensive talent we have added the past couple classes is just sick.

Malcolm Brown is a downhill runner. If you watch Steele play, their offense is all about the running back getting downhill as quick as possible. Thing that's impressed me about Brown the most from his sophomore to his junior year is his ability to jump cut and bounce things to the outside and also his ability to explode out of a cut and press the hole.

  • Brown is a GREAT outside power runner. He is patient and violent, and has just enough speed to take it to the house. That is just a tough, tough combo. I think there are comparisons there to Ced Benson. Only time can tell if he's the same caliber of competitor on the field that Ced is/was because Ced is special in that regard and always has been.

    • Welcomed Gerry, exchanged peasantries and introduced the site.

    • Gerry mentioned that it was great to be with 247 sports and briefly touched on Rodney Terry and Bobby Burton being involved and their history with Rivals.

    • Gerry mentioned you do not have to type www to get to the website. Just type texas.247sports.com

    • Got to the Malcolm Brown commitment.

    • Gerry talked about Malcolm as a player and that he reminded him of Chris Wells and that in the recruiting business he’s a top 25 player in the country and a 5 star recruit.

    • Ahmad Brooks mentioned that after watching his tape he said it would be tough for Malcolm to do the stuff he does in high school because of the competition difference. Ahmad said that he didn’t see Malcolm breaking away very much and that the tackles he does break are against guys that won’t play D1 football. (To be honest after hearing Ahmad talk I don’t think he really had the respect for 4A ball that he should have.)

    • Gerry answered Ahmad’s question/concerns well. He told him that evaluating running backs is very difficult at the high school level because there isn’t the competition there that they’ll see at the next level and that everyone would know more about Malcolm the first time he has to run into the hole in Spring Practice and make a jump cut to avoid a tackler…(presumably Jordan Hicks – Good Luck with that Malcolm)
    • Gerry also mentioned that Lake Travis fans have no doubts about Malcolm’s talent as he carried the ball over 30 times for 299 yards last year in the playoffs against the eventual state champions.

    • Gerry also mentioned that Steele is moving to 5A this year which will also be a jump in competition and everyone will be able to see Brown against better competition (theoretically).

    • The host asked Gerry after Malcolm who is the best player in the class?

    • Gerry said from a pure need standpoint its Christian Westerman. Westerman is a player who can come in day one and provide depth at LT and eventually be your starter there for years.

    • Mentioned Jaxon Shipley being a big pick up. That he’s a coaches son and is very technically sound. Jaxon does the subtle things at the WR position that most don’t recognize and he is very good at creating separation. Mentioned that Jaxon showed very well at the Gridiron Kings event in Florida earlier in the summer.

    • Mentioned Steve Edmond being the best LB in the state out of Daingerfield. Has played on two state championship teams and is currently playing at 235.

    • Gerry said that Sedrick Flowers might be the best interior lineman in the country. Has quick feet and can get out of his stance very quickly with a great punch at the point of attack. If there’s a OG that you want pulling and leading into the gap you want Flowers.

    • But…..for Gerry’s money the best player after Brown is Quandre Diggs. He does everything for Angelton. Play’s QB, RB, CB, Nickel and even special teams and has been doing it since his freshman season. Where he’ll end up at Texas he didn’t know but you want that type of athlete on your team.

    • The host then kind of wrapped it up and Gerry mentioned that it’s great partnering with 1300 and is looking forward to next time. (Expect a regular Gerry or Jeff segment in the future is my read.)

    • Ahmad finished by saying that guys like Gerry and Bobby are the best in the business and have been doing it since he was in high school.

  • awesome, thanks mib.

  • I think Ahmad's being a little too critical of Malcolm, but time will tell. One thing I noticed about Malcolm is how fluid his running style is, more fluid than Ced's was. Best overall running back talent Texas has recruited since Benson.

  • I would check it out if the site worked. I've tried two Macs and Safari and Firefox. Sadly, the website's page doesn't work. It could certainly use help from the team building the site here!

  • God, I am old. I think I broke the story of Ahmad's commitment to Texas.

He had previously been committed to Colorado but then decided to visit Texas (after the coaching change).

I called him at his house that Sunday night after visit, he answered his phone not with "hello" but with "Hook'em Horns!"

The rest of interview was cake. Ahmad has never been at a loss for words when it comes to talking about the Horns. And he's always been just a good all-around person.
