  • In my opinion Harsin is confident in his scheme, and knows that he doesnt need GG's arm strength and height difference to win. He has stated multiple times accurancy, management and mobility are most important to him. GG is lacking in all three. The held ball going into the endzone sums up his issues in one play. He held on too long, didnt throw it away and did not have the mobility to escape pressure. More then anything he is not a fluid athlete, his hips look stiff and does not make ANYTHING look easy no matter what the throw. Hate to pile on the guy, but is there anything worse then a pro style QB that is not a good passer?

He's not supposed to "sense" where the players are. This isn't just about instincts. He's supposed to know where his players are and also identify where/how the defense is playing to make the right kind of throw. We saw that in Case yesterday, but not in Garrett.

I completely disagree. A great quarterback has to be able to survey the field and anticipate the passing windows. He may know the routes for his players, but against any well coached defense, he won't know the coverages until after the ball is snapped. His inability to anticipate the next couple of seconds is his primary weakness, IMO.

You are correct. It's a similar thing for great PGs in basketball. Most QBs and PGs can handle the simple task of knowing where guys should/will be. The good ones can anticipate ("sense") openings and windows that others never do.

Signatures are stupid. You should block them.

I think you two are both saying the same thing in different ways. TexShoe is wanting him to know it, not sense it. You're wanting him to anticipate it. Same thing IMO.

Yeah, I agree as well. He clearly doesn't go through his progressions or see the field very well, but I don't think that on its own means he couldn't be a good college quarterback, except for the fact that he also doesn't really have any touch, doesn't throw a real catchable ball, and doesn't really control the game that well. The funny thing to me is that you'd expect him to be better in all these intangible areas considering he's had an NFL dad to teach him all those years. As much as I hate to say this (and comparing these two is probably an insult to Simms at this point), but there are some eerie similarities between Gilbert and Simms.

Right. To "sense" something, to me, means that innate ability to know where the open receivers/defenders are without surveying the field, i.e. if you were to blindfold the guy, he can tell you where the open WRs are and where the pressure is likely to come from.

I want my QB to look at the lineup and quickly process where to go with the ball, e.g. McNamara is matched up against Okafor, or Darius White is single covered with a giant cushion on the outside, etc.

Yeah, and they should. As of right now and as I look at the schedule next year, Texas would be a clear underdog to OU, Okie St, Missouri, and A&M. Probably a pickem to slight underdog to UCLA and Baylor on the road. A pickem to slight favorite to BYU and KState at home and Iowa St away. And an outright favorite against Rice, Kansas and Tech at home.

I hope this team realizes how much work there is to do, and that's just to get to 8 wins. We've fallen a long ways, and now we're trying to reinvent ourselves completely. Our rivals will be licking their chops again next year.

Next season is crucially important as a building block to get back in the top tier in 2012.

I hate to admit that I agree with you that next year could still be rough. We will live or die by can we control the line of scrimmage and we look thin thin thin there.

Just a complete condemnation of GG as a player. More candid than anything this site would allow. A ton of f bombs peppered with some GDs. The guy wasn't very happy to have him on the roster.

  • Anybody who thought Gilbert would look like a different qb after a 3 month offseason, an OC change, and 15 spring practices was kidding themselves. As much as Greg Davis was bad, an OC change wasn't going to fix Gilbert alone. Gilbert has a lot of work to do over the next 5 months like the rest of the qb's and he shouldn't be considered the frontrunner for the position. Hopefully they all make dramatic improvement because none of them showed consistency moving the team except McCoy who would have never moved the ball against the OU defense the way he threw the ball.

    Here's another one...

"Bryan even did something this spring that I thought was ingenious when he said, “I’m going to leave you in pass [drills] as long as you complete passes. That will let me know how good you are, how accurate you are.” A guy would have six straight [completions] or he’d have eight straight or he’d miss the first one and he’d say, “You’re out. You’re out. We’re into scoring. We’re not into names. We’re not into opinions. All I want to do is score.” So he’s got some ways that he separated quarterbacks before, and that’s a tough decision for him to make and I think he’s very capable of doing it. He’ll do it in the fall."

  • Even through last year, I was in GG's corner... but after seeing him in the spring game I can honestly say I am no longer. He just doesn't have it. I saw 0 improvement from a basics standpoint. Staring down receivers, inaccurate passing, slow release, questionable decision making, and now all of a sudden he's decided he's Vince Young and bails on plays early. I don't think the quarterback woes will go away until we get an offensive line that the QB's feel comfortable behind, but there are many quarterbacks out there who didn't have the benefit of playing at Lake Travis, and know how to play the position confidently without the prime beef up front.

Now who are YOU tryin' to kid? Most of those throws would've moved the ball on anyone. No other QB on our roster makes a couple of those. He has a quick release and seems to get the ball where it needs to be consistently. And even when he's running for his life (as he was) he gets the ball where it needs to be.

I agree. Other than the rainbow to Darius White, he actually had some really nice throws.

No amount of training can fix what is wrong with GG.

    Ditto That!!

  • I think the staff is giving GG every chance to earn the job, but I really believe Wood will get the nod in the fall. There are simply too many flaws to and too much history to go with GG. Harsin has said all along how important ball security is and that's a huge problem with GG. Case looke pretty good, but Wood has a much bigger upside, imo.
