From a Florida assistant coach... (2:56pm)

  • Man, you guys are givin me an aTm ice cream headache!!!

  • Its been a long time since i have followed football this closely so This may be completely ridiculous, ignorant, and unrealistic but I'm gonna say it....

If they want a WOW hire, why not try for Wade Phillips? Sure, he's a lousy head coach but I still think he is one of the great defensive minds in football. Is there a contract issue that prevents him from being an option?

Not quite sure Wade has a recruiting mentality or personality

The guy who had 5 straight Top 25 defenses? Sorry. I wasn't the biggest Bull Reese fan, and an argument can be made that he was kept around too long, but I'm not counting that hire against Mack. It wasn't a bad one.

I think it's funny, too, that people don't think Shannon or Austin would be great hires... or trust that Mack would bring in a good coordinator.

Hey, if there's a defensive coordinator out there that had these rankings on his resume for his group of kids the past decade until this past year: #3, 5, 15, 6, 1, 12, 3, 17... would the fans trust that he'd do a good job with our team next year? I'd think yes. Now, change the word "defense" to "offense"... and take a guess who that coordinator is. lol

Some people are never going to be satisfied, regardless of who we hire. A lot of Florida fans are loathing the Muschamp hiring.

I'm just going to sit back and watch this unfold. Whoever we hire next will have the resources to do a good job - even if the fans don't like him - IMHO.

  • You're right, that coordinator totally got those numbers with a bunch of Casey Dicks at quarterback.

edit: crap, it's supposed to show Casey Dick flat on the ground, my bad.

it wasn't meant to be a pro or anti greg davis thing... just that these potential defensive coordinators all have nice resumes. that's why they are being looked at.

and since u brought up mr dick, fwiw, i think very few offensive coordinators are going to have a bunch of casey dicks at qb and still have a job after several years of casey dick-like performances. lol. that guy was terrible.

  • I agree, I am a fan of young guns like Austin. I feel like in today's college football, longevity at the coordinator position is overrated. If your coordinators are constantly leaving and getting head coaching jobs, you're getting better coordinators than those who stay awhile.

Also, man was Casey Dick terrible. I still think that Malzahn's offense would have been SEC champs if Nutt hadn't benched Mustain for Dick. I also think Mustain's career was ruined forever at that point.

Yeah, he was a complete idiot who sat in the corner sucking his thumb while Vince prepared the game plans, ran the practices, and basically developed himself! Geez... at least be honest. The guy piled up the most yardage and points in Texas history by building offenses around 4 different qbs and you might even say styles. From a prototype like Simms, to a freak of nature like Vince, to a guy like Major who was pretty good.... not great in skills but an absolute winner, to a skinny kid from a west Texas wide spot in the road who developed into one of the greatest qbs in college football history.

We got what we wanted... we got his head on a stake. We're rejoicing.

But we damn well better understand that regardless of how us experts give all the credit to Vince and Colt and Major even Chris... the list of OCs who have produced more during that same time is very, very short. If we were right and any of us could have coached those guys, then good times are on the way now that we've got rid of him.

But if we were wrong and he did play a large part in their development and production - we're going to look like one of the most dumbass fan bases in all of college football!

    agreed.

ever since GD resigned, i have been praying for our next OC to be treated nicely by our fans.

he's going to have a very tough time duplicating the end result of GD's offenses, regardless of which jimmies and joes he's got on offense.

That would give him some advantage. The one Florida man I know well was very positive on him said he works well with other coaches and comes across well to parents and the players. A hard worker

Let's sign him up. Everything I've seen looks impressive.

Texas' NCAA Scoring Offense Ranking since 2000...
    2000 Rank 8
    2001 Rank 6
    2002 Rank 16
    2003 Rank 6
    2004 Rank 12
    2005 Rank 1
    2006 Rank 6
    2007 Rank 14
    2008 Rank 14
    2009 Rank 3
    2010 Rank 87

Neither of which addresses the hiring of him. He was hired away from LSU and did a great job initially at Texas. Did he have bad games or weak spots or overstay? Maybe so.

JMHO but I saw him as an upgrade from what we had but not a guy who'd coach a D to championship levels.

While Simms lead the fiasco in Dallas, we got no help favors the D that day despite their #1 ranking. 3 turnovers lead to 3 TDs and Brown rushed for a career best day.

Next year in Lubbock should have been the end when we failed to force TT into a single punt after the 1st quarter.

But big props for a D that stuffed Neb and had some success.

Hoping Austin is more GR/Tomey than McDuff.

Gosh I wonder what Greg Davis's numbers said until last year. If it was not human life involved (paychecks) one would say what a difference a year makes. The OU OC was trashed last year and gets a great gig after this year. Greg... I have no clue.
