Frazier's mom didn't really tweet that did she?

  • Excerpt from the link:

Around the same time [Frazier's] transfer was approved, News 8 found the following quotes on the Twitter account of Frazier's mother:

"...this is a cut throat business, I'm just saying."

"...I think he got stock in that school."

"...these kids are not y'all kids... it's not personal it's business."

    http://www.wfaa.com/news/investigates/Did-DISDs-Kimball-High-win-state-title-fair-and-square-150684145.html

Some DISD officials are now calling for a review of Frazier's transfer.

I don't care at all about whether Kimball has to forfeit games, but here's hoping this doesn't wind up somehow morphing into an NCAA amateurism issue.

  • Days later, Frazier enrolled at Kimball, rated by the state as an "academically unacceptable" high school in south central Dallas.

    ^^^^
What does this mean? How can a public school be academically unacceptable?

I take it you're not from Texas.

The criteria for academically acceptable are 60 percent on TAKS Subsections "Social Studies", "Reading/ELA", and "Writing", 40 percent on "Mathematics", which were an increase in standards in 2006 from 2005.[1] Other minimum standards required to be met are 40 percent on "Science", 50 percent on SDAA II, 75 percent on Completion Rate, and 1.0 percent on Dropout Rate

Any school or district not meeting all of the above criteria for Academically Acceptable will be rated academically unacceptable. Any school or district with such ranking will be required to submit a plan for corrective action, and TEA may assign a monitor to the school or district to assist it in improving its rating.

A district with two consecutive Academically Unacceptable ratings can be closed by TEA (as was the case with the now-defunct Wilmer-Hutchins Independent School District and the Mirando City Independent School District).

For a wiki brief on the topic

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Education_Agency_accountability_ratings_system

Essentially, it means the school did not meet all of criteria for being "Academically acceptable," which is a passing rate of 60% on most TAKS subjects, but only 50% or even 40% on some other subjects, a 75% completion rate, and a dropout rate of less than 1%. If found to be unacceptable, then the school has to present a plan to cure the deficiencies, and if they continue, the school might be closed.

And if you want to review the standards in detail, help yourself.

I will say that in many cases its the inability to meet the dropout rate that kicks a school down although test scores may be in play here too. I really don't know.

Apparently the standards have been increased for 2011 to 70% in most Reading, Writing, and Social Studies, 65% in Math, and 60% in Science, but the permissible dropout rate has been increased to 1.6%, so it appears the state has adjusted the standards to meet the concern you noted.

  • Just wait until the new End of Course STAR exam scores come out. The TAKS is being phased out (stupidly) and replaced by a MUCH harder EOC exam for each core class. Many inner city schools are going to do HORRIBLE.

The State has lowered the passing score to 2 standard deviations below an 70....which means a passing score on the Math test is going to be around a 50-55 depending upon how good (or bad) the State does in order just to make "results" look "better."

TEA and school districts have sold their souls to standardize testing....it is sad and pathetic. It's become a perversion of the system.

I think the STARR EOC's will be much better but I don't really want to get in a debate over it. I do want to add however that it's not school districts and TEA, it's the federal gov't. It's part of No Child Left Behind.

The rating also comes from the federal gov't on the sophomore TAKS when the sophomores couldn't care less because they only have to pass the 11th grade TAKS to graduate. It was stupid.

  • This was part of the stuff that I was referring to with Frazier & the people around him. He's a really good talent but there's a reason that he looks like a Baylor type of kid. Still hopes he inks with Texas.

My class is the last to take TAKS, and today we had to be the guinea pigs for the STAAR test, also known as the EOC test. The TAKS test is a joke, but the STAAR was actually fairly challenging.

  • Kimball's boys basketball coaching staff actively recruits players across the Dallas area in an attempt to convince them to transfer to the school, according to sources cited in a WFAA report Monday night.

University Interscholastic League rules prohibit students from transferring from one school to another for athletic purposes.

In the report Helen Delaney says two Kimball coaches contacted her this past summer about her son Brien Howard, a junior varsity player at Irving MacArthur, and tried to convince her to move to Kimball's attendance zone with her son.

"He (a Kimball coach) even told me there were some new houses out there (in Kimball's attendance zone) that I would be interested...that they could probably help me get into," Delaney said.

Delaney also said in the report that one of the Kimball coaches told her that she and her son could remain in Irving, their current hometown, and commute to Kimball daily.

Tim Onkst, the owner of TexasRoundball.com, summarized Delaney's claims in the report.

"They (Kimball coaches) are recruiting them (players)," Onkst said. "They go out and actively try to get the best players they can get to come."

Dallas ISD released a statement to The Dallas Morning News on Monday, through spokesman Jon Dahlander, saying the points broadcast are being investigated.

"The issues raised in a story aired on WFAA alleging that a student transferred to Kimball High School for athletic purposes are being investigated by the district. In addition, new information received by the superintendent's office within the last week related to the roster of the men's basketball team at Kimball is also being investigated. Again, Dallas ISD wants its teams to play by the rules both on and off the court. There will be no additional statements on this issue until this internal investigation is complete," the statement says.

Two weeks ago a WFAA report centered on the details surrounding Kimball standout Keith Frazier's transfer from Irving to Kimball in the fall, when Frazier's mother reportedly told the District 11-4A executive committee that the two were moving from Irving because the rent on their federally subsidized home was increasing. But the lease, according to the WFAA report, showed that the rent was frozen.

Nine players from Kimball's team this year transferred to the school, according to WFAA. The list includes Keith Frazier, Torrey Henry, Randelle Jones, Darian Hancock, David Tucker, D'Angelo Allen, Shannon Lilly, Gabe Lilly and Sheldon Yearwood. The report also singles out Jalen Jones and Jordan Williams as members of the 2011 state championship team who transferred to Kimball.
