Fort Sam Houston Bound!

  • I'm in Germany going to WTU in Fort Sam Houston by mid to late July. I'm married with kids that visit, but looking for a house with 3beds and two baths or similar in size. I know I could look on line to research but real estate agents have their own agenda so I ask some fellow Texans where to live and a little bit about the area in question. Thanks for your help in advance.

  • I live in San Antonio................buy something in the NE School district or the Alamo Heights district. NE is on the northeast side of San Antonio on the outer edge of town. The Stone Oak area will give you a good selection and price range.

Alamo Heights can be pricey but the resale is great.............its located just off downtown San Antonio and is almost inner city. (plus its close to Fort Sam)

  • NE school district is where you want to be, Churchill, Reagan, and Johnson are the best schools in the district and MacArthur is good too and closer to FSH. I lived in SA for almost 15 years if you have any questions just ask.

I moved here 30+ years ago when I was a freshman in high school. (went to MacArthur in the NE ISD). The above post is correct the houses in Alamo Heights are expensive but they do hold their value. There are a few neighborhoods right next to Alamo Heights that are cheaper, but you can't tell where one neighborhood nds and the other begins. It also happens to be the neighborhood I live in. I am less than 10 minutes from FSH. I personally would not live in Stone Oak, mainly because of traffic and the dominance of cookie cutter neighborhoods. If you have any questions please private message me. Good luck with the house search.

Alamo Heights and surrounding areas are on the more expensive side. I do agree with the other posters that anywhere in the NEISD is decent and not too far from Fort Sam. If you're interested in the Cibolo Steele district I have a 3/2 for sale.

  • Got a 3 bedrooms, 2 baths house opening up for rent on July 1st. Retired military couple with two kids living in it and love it. But his in laws are moving in with them and need bigger house, so they are moving a block away. An elementary school and middle school within walking, and a Madison H.S. (Northeast Schools) five minutes away. Let me know if interested.

Almost forgot...just one hour from DKR.

  • Just an FYI but if education for the kids is your key, Ft Sam and Randolph are the last two USA bases who have their own schools.

So living on base isn't a bad option from that point though I have no clue about housing on base.

    thanks for your service.

  • Thanks for your service. I spent some time as a patient at the Ophthalmology Clinic at Ft. Sam back in the 1970's. They were pioneering the use of lasers and I was one of the first ten people in the world to have my retina welded with a laser. That was after glass punctured my left eye. It worked out far better than anyone anticipated as I had cataract surgery on my right eye last year and I am still waiting for symptoms to show up in my left eye.

Thank you 52. I had PRK in Landstuhl last year and found out the corrective eye surgery program has unlimited funds and state of the art technology. I say this because if you've served in the Army you know it is stingy with its money on certain programs. I love the surgery and will highly recommend the surgery to anyone Soldier or civilian. I can actually see the players on the field during a UT game lol.

I keep on hearing nothing but good things about the NE side of SA. I'm really excited about the move back to Texas and SA after ten years away from God's Country. I appreciate everyone's ideas about the area and the city. I am almost willing to bet any other state wouldn't give this much insight and help. Hook'em

  • Not that you asked, but here's a couple of Mexican food joints in San Antonio that have been featured on the Food Network lately. I'll be checking them both out today for myself.
