For those interested, Aggies get a commit

  • Ben Compton - 6-3, 310 OL from Friendswood - switched from Rice to A&M yesterday as first reported by GigEm247.com.

Aggies and Longhorns have both gotten commitments this week, and the news of both were first reported on 247Sports.com.

Here's a short video of Compton.

I think they are having issues this year. But I also think they are positioning themselves well for next year. Loved their OL class last year.

But they just don't have the depth or front-line guys across the board like Texas. They just don't. And it comes back to recruiting.

  • I trust Sherman on his offensive line recruiting.

  • Okay, okay, echeese262 is going to chase me down on this, but this kid is a sleeper from my school. Compton ran a 4.94 at 306-pounds at Texas A&M camp in July. He is being recruited as a center only, and he has the smarts and quickness to get it done.

In talking with Friendswood head coach Steve Van Meter yesterday, he said the kid is 180 degrees different this year. He is playing at a high level.

Coach Van Meter and the Mustangs also scrimmaged Houston Lamar last weekend. He mentioned sophomore corner Cedric Lancaster as very impressive.

  • F friendswood.

    PS,

Gerry's Dad was on staff at Friendswood in 1973 when they beat the dog out of my Ro-Hawks in the state semi-finals. 24-0 and the game wasn't that close. One of those nasty cold but clear as a bell Texas winter days.

We had knocked off 3 unbeatens to get there, Hondo, Van Vleck and the original refrigerator, George Woodard of Aggie fame and then Steve McMicheal's Freer Buckaroos.

  • Is there any other video other than this one play?

I agree the Ags are having a tough year in recruiting. They are not addressing their glaring needs at DT, LB, DE.

And to a lessor extent, QB, as after Jerrod leaves, that leaves? Tannehill to start next year? Then who? Joekel?

Tannehill will be fine next year. After that, I think Showers is leading that race.

I haven't seen Compton other than that play, but I thought it was pretty impressive to see a kid that big get down there that well.

Thanks! I'm still in suburban Nashville, which is company HQ. I still get back all the time. Headed to Austin next week.

They have really upped their recruitment of 2012 kids generally. They are recruiting them as hard as they are the 2011 kids and it's working in a few strategic spots. Both Brenham kids are probably the biggest example.

  • In relation to the Aggy recruits and related comments, I do not worry too much whether their recruits are good, bad or ugly...but most on these boards continue to offer the latter two as primary recruiting traits.

What worries me...and always worries me is that they could recruit, sign and start the slowest LB and DB's in the Div 1since my great grandfather, Moishe Bergenbloomstein had to trot out instead of working on his accounting homework. In other words, they ALWAYS have some guy, who otherwise completely sucks and has no discernible football skills to speak of, who plays the game of his life against the beloved Man de Longhorns.

A&M recruiting never keeps me awake at night, just the potential for angst in the fall...on the field.

We've somehow managed to lose a couple to them with a huge talent disparity. Hate to be THAT fan, but this just happens to be my mindset.

    Until someone convinced me otherwise.

    Gerry --

This makes logical sense to me...but I would hate to see it happen. Any insight on the truth to this rumor?

Time will tell. From being at the scrimmage and talking to people, he is probably one to watch (there are one or two every year when you have this many early verbals). Here is the other thing, Texas A&M covets Reed and will not back off recruiting him. I think he's a guy that will be rumored all the way up until signing day.

  • What??? Taking 2 DEs in a class isn't unreasonable...both can be on the field at the same time. Cedric loves Texas. Are people around him pushing him elsewhere?

Just to be clear, no reason to get worried.

  • Wow, just looked at the thread.

"As for your question on Cedric Reed, Ced really likes the fame and fortune that comes with being a Texas commit. In fact, that is one of the main reasons he committed to the Horns."

Pretty classless and unprofessional for a mod to make baseless accusations of payouts.

I think you may be reading into that a little much. "Fame and fortune" doesn't mean money inasmuch it means the ballyhoo or the attention and the rewards of it.

And half their fans are calling Reed a "puss" despite wanting him to come to their school. I hope that type of BS towards 16-18 year old kids won't be accepted here.

    Classless.

  • Couldn't agree more Brian.

I took "fame and fortune" to be a figure of speech and nothing more. Sometimes tone doesn't come across on the net and we take things too literally (I've certainly gotten in trouble that way)
