Final Touchdown - fumble?

  • I saw the final touchdown, but missed all of the replay stuff afterwards, because I had to say good night to the kids. In fact, I didn't know that they were even looking at a fumble.

So 1. Was there a fumble? 2. Did we recover it. 3. Did Berg make it over the goal line in the first place?

I just saw some bitching and moaning on non UT boards and thought I'd asked you guys who saw the replay stuff.

  • He lost control of the ball, but you couldn't really tell where the ball was, if his knee was down, or who recovered it. Too many bodies around to overturn it. It was going to stand whichever way it was called on the field.

Which leads me to believe that when the side judge ran in he saw Bergeron with the ball across the GL.

It was just as close as the OSU TD earlier in the game where Diggs knocked the ball out of the players hands as he crossed the GL, or the kick off that was clearly touched by the OSU player.

In all honesty, I thought that OSU touchdown was a clear touchdown, but yes, the kickoff play was a bad call.

In regards to the fumble, njohnson12 nailed it.

Couldn't believe they didn't get that call right. Ball clearly hit the guys hand before going out.

    No way.

Kicked line drive footballs naturally make 90 degree turns for the sideline.biggrin

I was telling my dad when watching the game if the players were all invisible, I could have still made the correct call. It's simple physics and obviously the refs haven't made it past high school.

In Oklahoma...high school is "higher education"...few make it through!

  • On the KO play, just focus on how the OSU player reacted when the ball made the left turn towards the sideline after it passed him. He desperately was trying to get that ball before it went out of bounds and was clearly upset when he failed. Somebody explain that to me if he didn't touch that ball?

I saw his eyes light up when he saw the ball take that sudden 90° angle towards the sideline. He clearly wanted to possess that magic ball. It was a jack and the beanstalk thing going on, I tell you.

Not only that but when the call stood, he was seen laughing on the sideline like he couldn't believe it went unnoticed.

    1. He lost it at some point, yes.
    2. Hard to say, the OSU guy who lifted up the ball did so a couple long beats after the scrum, so couldn't tell if it was the first recovery.
    3. Very close. Could go either way, replay wasn't clear - hence, the call (TD) "standing" (rather than being "confirmed") was the correct replay outcome.

This x 1,000. That was a horribly blown call that cost us 17 yards of field position.

In retrospect, however, it also led to the score a little quicker which gave us a little more time, most of which (sans only 29 seconds) we needed. So, karma.

  • In both cases, look at the player reactions.

OSU player on the kickoff clearly thought he had touched the ball.

Did JB make any effort to "recover"? I didn't see it but I did see the Line Judge make a clear TD signal. No replay had the right "angle" to see where the ball cross but the nano second it hit the "white plane", it's a TD.

Your answer to #3 provides the answer to #1. I thought at least some part of the ball got to the goal line before he lost control and replays were inconclusive on that point. The rest doesn't matter.

  • I've watched it multiple times this morning and last night.

Yes, there was a fumble. Whether it occurred prior to Bergeron breaching the goal line, it's unclear. Whether O-State recovered "in time" or "first", you can't say for sure.

I lean toward O-State recovering first. I also lean toward OSU not recovering in time.

Bergeron could not make a play on the ball. He was pinned to the ground, with his helmet turned to the opposite side.

This is what I think too.

Interesting on the OSU TD, I think they just reviewed whether or not it was a catch. It was very close whether or not it was a fumble before he crossed the goal line (that went out of the EZ and would have been UTs ball on the 20)

  • Bergeron had the best view and he said he was over the line. I imagine that is true and all the fumble talk is irrelevant at that point.

I don't know if he crossed the goal line or not, but Bergeron's got a pretty big dog in the fight.

  • If the game was on ABC, the overhead camera angle would have been beneficial on Bergerons td/fumble. FOX may look at whether or not they want to install that camera. IMO

  • If that play happens anywhere but the goal line, the outcome may have been different.

When the zebra judged it a TD, it meant that the replay had to be pretty clear to overturn. If all they had to overturn was the spot of the ball, I'm not sure that we wouldn't have lost it.

Like most of you, I've seen hundreds of football games in my life. I'm constantly amazed at the game's ability to present situations that are unusual and interesting. It happens several times each year. Thank goodness this one went in our favor.
