FSU Hires Mario Edwards, Sr

  • tricknole said...

In a few years he will probably be off at some smaller school as an assistant coach.

You guys DO realize that he's replacing a position held by yet ANOTHER former FSU player?

If you hadn't have lost the recruiting battle none of you would be making a fuss over it. I think it's very possible we would've still hired him even if he didn't have a son, assuming he still had high school coaching experience. We bring back former players all the time in these capacities. And none of them had sons we were recruiting.

    /conspiracy

Would you like to venture a guess on how many years from now that would be? I'll guess 3-4.

Was the position he's filling for a former FSU player also the father of the top recruit in the nation who was seriously wavering on his commitment the very year he's hired for the job?

And if we would have won the recruiting battle we wouldn't be making a fuss over this because FSU wouldn't have hired Edwards.

Based on your response it sounds like you didn't bother reading what I wrote. shrug

If he did he glossed right over it. Its a lot more fun to speculate and make stuff up. i for one don't see the issue. Its not like the guy was a domino pizza delivery guy getting a job at FSU. The whole thing is blown way out of proportion.

  • "And if we would have won the recruiting battle we wouldn't be making a fuss over this because FSU wouldn't have hired Edwards."

how exactly are you aware of this? was it a condition of employment? before anyone asks about the Daryll Scott comment, i had several well connected CU alumni brag to me and laugh about it. i was also told by some Texas people with good info, that the Texas staff knew what CU had done.

btw- for all of this fuss, on the %1 chance he doesn't end up at FSU, Oklahoma was likely next on the list. wouldn't that have been fun? they had Shipp recruiting him, we had Giles.

Zero. They would have applauded Mack for taking on such a young coach. Many of these same people openly wanted Mack to hire Jeffcoat to increase our likelihood of signing Jackson. It all depends on what side of the field you're on. Texas fans are quick to be a moral authority when it suits their narrative.

Careful. You're lumping a lot of folks in that group that don't roll that way. There is no basis for this comparison. Mack Brown doesn't run this type of tit-for-tat program. He doesn't have to. As such, your argument is baseless.

Jeffcoat's father was very open and supportive of allowing his son to choose his own school as most parents seems to be these days (Jake Oliver, etc.). If Mario Edwards Jr. would have picked a school besides FSU I imagine we would have seen a Landon Collins type incident.

I was a bit bothered by the way his dad handled his recruitment. His son even decommitted at one point. And no I wouldn't do the same in regards to pushing my own kid towards UT, and I didn't support hiring the elder Jeffcoat to influence his son's decision.

Over signing is also not against the rules, but it's still a dubious form of recruiting worthy of passing judgement on.

Obviously I'm doing some speculating, which I prefer not to do, but this topic is speculatory in nature, so mine is based on my feelings above. As someone who follows recruiting closely, this was a recruitment that I had real issues with.

On this particular topic I don't necessarily expect, or care if the majority agrees with me.

And Gerry happens to agree with me and this one statement...4.I don't think Mario Jr. would have ended up at FSU, if he had been offered a similar position at another school and FSU didn't do the same.

  • Mario Edwards went to FSU. It's not the least bit uncommon for former players to go back. I doubt money was a real issue here and Jr has been talking about going to FSU for 3 years now. Making more out of this than needs to be made.

If we sign Vince's son then hire him as a coach latter would you complain too?

My argument never said Mack did it or would do it. Just said plenty of message board fans wanted him to do it. Based

i see the likely reason for the angst here.

-we will lose Okafor after this season and probably Jeffcoat. both projected as first round picks.

-Hall decommitted. Prevot(who i don't want) is headed elsewhere. either way, he takes a few years before he's ready physically.

-Cedric Reed is promising and i like him. Reggie Wilson is still a bit of an unknown we're waiting on. we'll see.

-Blueitt is a true freshman and being mentioned as a TE.

-Ridgeway i like, but a true freshman, young player.

-rush DE/gate crasher is a prime position and the hardest to find difference makers at.

-DE may be about to be a position of concern and will probably be thin in terms of depth and experience. it's probably why we recruited Mike Mitchell for it(DE) and are shopping the JUCO market.

-Edwards would have filled a potential problem area, though due to his size as a JR was being recruited as a future DT.

now we're pointing fingers at dad and assumed that's(employment) the only reason he signed w/ FSU. really? his old school he starred at? asinine thought, but perhaps Mario SR wanted to climb the ladder from HS to college and took the opportunity? and possibly looking at bigger jobs down the road?

    strange witchhunt we have here.

Well there you go. Proof positive. All we needed was speculation and ducks.

  • I'm sure Mario, Sr. has all the experience needed for that made up position. I'm equally as sure he will be putting in 60 hour work weeks too.

    Ha..very good.
Got me to crack one. Yeah I agree, it is speculating because proof positive will not be had on this one unless both sides decide to "rat" on themselves. It just has a poor scent is all. This is one of those calls that FSU would have been better off to handle differently in order to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. You can do that you know.

But the question is this..........would Sr be hired at FSU if his son was not a 5 star recruit? I think the answer is no............so for me it is like Self and Drew all over again.

He did develop a player after all and he is now going to get paid for it. In horse racing that is called a stud service fee.

  • I still think that the reason Edwards is at FSU is because Diaz basically told him that he would likely be a DT. That, coupled with the fact that his dad is a former Seminole and is still very high on them makes it a legit decision.

That said, this sort of thing (hiring parents to lure kids) happens all the time... and at every level. It even happens in high school golf. No big deal. If we want RSJ to sign on the dotted line, we may have to have Barnes offer him a spot on the basketball team. Oh well.

Still not sure why in the hell we didn't offer Nathan Hughes last year. That kid really wanted to be a Horn and we didn't offer him. Now he's a friggin Sooner. Makes no sense at all to me. Dumb decision IMO

don't know. maybe he didn't like Texas. maybe we didn't like him. maybe both. the staff has called their shot pretty good at the position though.
