I agree with Gerry. Much ado about nothing. I think his dad would have influenced him to FSU regardless of the potential for a job.

Spin it however you want. This is payola. Plain and simple. Will be interesting to see if any national journos file FOIA to review resumes of those who were not awarded the state job. Betcha the resumes were superior directly related to the job duties. It's one thing if private school. But there are rules for gov't institutions of which FSU is one. Ask Bobby Petrino how this is supposed to work.

How many of y'all would be outraged if Mario Jr. had signed with UT and then his dad got hired by Mack Brown? If it's not against the rules, it is not cheating.

Coach I disagree with you..............some fans do have "situation ethics" but I would say most expect coaches and players at The University of Texas to conduct themselves in a first class manner.............like the State Constitution says about The University.

What is disturbing here, for me, is it tells kids its OK to play close to the line. It just sends the wrong message. Plus it tells me the FSU coaching staff is lazy..........

This is a story from a few years ago about Texas and other programs hiring relatives or AAU coaches etc.............it shows the Texas program in a very good light. (even though it is in another sport) IMHO

Which is what makes the Paulino story a nice story.

It's an example of how this business is supposed to work.

Paulino was a good college basketball player, yet not quite good enough for the NBA. So he went overseas after exhausting his eligibility in 2006, playing one season in Europe. Then last season he played for the Toros, which was perfect because it provided an opportunity to simultaneously take classes at UT.

"Coach always stressed that I needed to get my degree," Paulino said. "So when I played in the NBDL I took a full load and finished."

Barnes rewarded Paulino upon graduation by offering an entry-level position, the kind that won't make him rich but will give him a legitimate start in the profession. So now the Longhorns have a young man on staff who played for and graduated from the school, a young man on staff who understands the game from every level and has gone through exactly what the student-athletes at Texas are currently going through.

That's a package deal in its own right, I suppose.

Jeffcoat's father was very open and supportive of allowing his son to choose his own school as most parents seems to be these days (Jake Oliver, etc.). If Mario Edwards Jr. would have picked a school besides FSU I imagine we would have seen a Landon Collins type incident.

I was a bit bothered by the way his dad handled his recruitment. His son even decommitted at one point. And no I wouldn't do the same in regards to pushing my own kid towards UT, and I didn't support hiring the elder Jeffcoat to influence his son's decision.

Over signing is also not against the rules, but it's still a dubious form of recruiting worthy of passing judgement on.
