FSU Hires Mario Edwards, Sr

  • austinr said...

I guess the question going forward will be how long is Sr employed by FSU.

BTW I thought the NCAA had a rule against this type of situation. (recently passed) Or is that just for basketball?

basketball. 2 years prior, 2 years following.

Actually there is a difference...the other coaches didn't have sons who were 5 star recruits and visiting other schools. I don't have an issue with colleges hiring high school coaches but let's just call this situation what it is and move on... It was a package deal! THE END!

Guis Malzahn had 3 national 100 level prospects on his high school team. Shockingly enough, he was offered a job by Arkansas the year they came out and signed LOI's.

Las Vegas Bishop Gorman had DeMarco Murray and others, same deal.

Don't led the DNA match, alone, confuse the situations similarity IMO.

but all had influence over the recruit. Malzahn in particular and I'd say he's done alright with the opportunity. Better than the QB he coached in HS anyway. M.E. Sr. is capable of doing the job. I agree with Gerry. Much ado about nothing. I think his dad would have influenced him to FSU regardless of the potential for a job.

I'm not letting DNA confuse the situations. Like I said in my previous post I have no issue with colleges hiring high school coaches and most hire coaches for the relationships they have with existing players. However, those coaches have influence but not a final say. In this case hiring a kids dad, 100% seals the deal. So you could say DNA sealed the deal. While similar to the other situations you listed, it's still different.

  • Spin it however you want. This is payola. Plain and simple. Will be interesting to see if any national journos file FOIA to review resumes of those who were not awarded the state job. Betcha the resumes were superior directly related to the job duties. It's one thing if private school. But there are rules for gov't institutions of which FSU is one. Ask Bobby Petrino how this is supposed to work.

  • How many of y'all would be outraged if Mario Jr. had signed with UT and then his dad got hired by Mack Brown? If it's not against the rules, it is not cheating.

"I've heard some of our fans say, 'We were always an SEC school. We just didn't know it," athletic director Bill Byrne said.

Has that happened? I can't recall it...Jimbo Fischer has definitely done it.

Zero. They would have applauded Mack for taking on such a young coach. Many of these same people openly wanted Mack to hire Jeffcoat to increase our likelihood of signing Jackson. It all depends on what side of the field you're on. Texas fans are quick to be a moral authority when it suits their narrative.

  • All the FSU fans who talked sh*t about their staff out-recruiting Texas to land the top player in our state can post their apology here.

    Thanks.

Coach I disagree with you..............some fans do have "situation ethics" but I would say most expect coaches and players at The University of Texas to conduct themselves in a first class manner.............like the State Constitution says about The University.

What is disturbing here, for me, is it tells kids its OK to play close to the line. It just sends the wrong message. Plus it tells me the FSU coaching staff is lazy..........

This is a story from a few years ago about Texas and other programs hiring relatives or AAU coaches etc.............it shows the Texas program in a very good light. (even though it is in another sport) IMHO

"Consequently, there will be more package deals next year.

    And the following year.

And the year after that, too.

Which is what makes the Paulino story a nice story.

It's an example of how this business is supposed to work.

Paulino was a good college basketball player, yet not quite good enough for the NBA. So he went overseas after exhausting his eligibility in 2006, playing one season in Europe. Then last season he played for the Toros, which was perfect because it provided an opportunity to simultaneously take classes at UT.

"Coach always stressed that I needed to get my degree," Paulino said. "So when I played in the NBDL I took a full load and finished."

Barnes rewarded Paulino upon graduation by offering an entry-level position, the kind that won't make him rich but will give him a legitimate start in the profession. So now the Longhorns have a young man on staff who played for and graduated from the school, a young man on staff who understands the game from every level and has gone through exactly what the student-athletes at Texas are currently going through.

That's a package deal in its own right, I suppose.

It's just not the kind we've grown used to seeing lately."

    Good point.

And it's not like we hired him to be a coach. Hiring a former player in a non-coaching capacity is a move A LOT of schools do to help get their foot in the coaching door. In a few years he will probably be off at some smaller school as an assistant coach.

You guys DO realize that he's replacing a position held by yet ANOTHER former FSU player?

If you hadn't have lost the recruiting battle none of you would be making a fuss over it. I think it's very possible we would've still hired him even if he didn't have a son, assuming he still had high school coaching experience. We bring back former players all the time in these capacities. And none of them had sons we were recruiting.

  • Jeffcoat's father was very open and supportive of allowing his son to choose his own school as most parents seems to be these days (Jake Oliver, etc.). If Mario Edwards Jr. would have picked a school besides FSU I imagine we would have seen a Landon Collins type incident.

I was a bit bothered by the way his dad handled his recruitment. His son even decommitted at one point. And no I wouldn't do the same in regards to pushing my own kid towards UT, and I didn't support hiring the elder Jeffcoat to influence his son's decision.

Over signing is also not against the rules, but it's still a dubious form of recruiting worthy of passing judgement on.
