Expectations for the Fresno State game???

  • Here's where we are at...

1.Texas has struggled, as expected, in the both scrimmages without Kabongo.

2.Texas without Kabongo is a very young team with zero PG experience and playmaking.

3.Texas will take the court against Fresno State with key parts being pretty talented players playing their first game, and year older players with more of a burden of carrying a team at times - this game certainly fits that should Kabongo not play.

    4. Fresno State will be without freshman big man Robert Upshaw due to an injury - which is a key loss for Coach Terry and staff.

So here is the Q, with the understanding very few will actually see the game, what are your thoughts and expectations for game one this season?

  • Two things that are a must...
    1. Give the ball to Sheldon early and often. I hope to see him demand the ball and play like he's the best scorer on the floor and know it.
    2. Let's see what we got in Ridley. Give him the ball down low and lets see if he can dominate. Throw the freshman into the fire as it were.

I expect a defensive battle / low scoring affair. Both coaches have it in their DNA.

McClellan will need to score over 20 IMO. I haven't seen Felix play yet, but Kabango is our stud... play defense, and let our talent carry us to victory. Don't let Fresno get hot with uncontested shots. Drive to the hole with the young freshmen in this game. It could be another of our biggest advantages.

  • Whatever it takes to win, pretty much. No style points, not looking for any kind of margin.

  • Fresno State doesn't have big man Kansas bounce-back Braeden Andersen either. He's a mid-year transfer and isn't eligible until the second semester. SG Kevin Olekaibe is dinged but should play. I think you guys take this one.

I totally forgot about Andersen not being eligible until mid-year.

What is the pulse of Fresno State fans on this year team?

Agree on the potential for a low scoring game - no doubt about it.

  • Fresno State returns 4 of the top 6 in minutes played, but it lost the starting PG Shepp and Guerrero did not seek a waiver. It committed 25 turnovers in its exhibition against Fresno Pacific, a new entrant into NCAA Div. II. Nevertheless, Fresno State is very experienced.

However, without Upshaw and Anderson (who isn't eligible until January), they are ridiculously thin up front. Tanner Giddings is their only post, and he's a 6'10" freshman who doesn't look strong enough to play DI post at the present, though he did manage 10 boards and 5 blocks in their exhibition game. That leaves 6'8" Kevin Foster and 6'7" Jerry Brown to do it all on the front line.

Olekiabe is a mad bomber who may or may not play as he is coming back from an injury. 92/272 behind the arc last year, so he shoots a lot, but he doesn't shoot that well. No one else on the team did, either, as they finished at .314 on the year in 3 pt percentage.

So, try to take care of the ball, get it inside. Pound away in the paint, get Foster and Brown in foul trouble, and watch them try to compete with a 6'3" guy in the middle of a zone at the end of the game.

We're really excited but it's the 2013 season we're really looking forward to, with Cezar Guerrero and Andersen being eligible, and Paul Watson and probably Soma Edo coming in (The early injuries have contributed to the looking ahead, to be honest). Terry is a fantastic recruiter and he's doing a great job of rebuilding this program.

Olekaibe has recovered faster than expected from his injury. He's been practicing fully this week IIRC. If he can't go it'll be true frosh Marvelle Harris at SG. Harris is talented but really raw. I think this is only his second or third year of competitive basketball.

As for Tanner Giddings, I think he's put on like 20 or 30 pounds since he got to Fresno State. Not on Upshaw's level but he'll be a good stopgap in the meantime as he learns and adapts. We originally signed him after Upshaw committed to Kansas State, and then....well....pretty sure you know the story.

But did it come at the expense of agility? What I saw of him in high school made it look like a guy who had a certain amount of offensive ability, but a lot of tenativeness on defense. Poor timing on contesting shots, a little slow in moving the feet for better position, not putting a body strong into an opponent to secure rebounding position, etc. All the things you normally associate with a guy who isn't terribly athletic but has always gotten away with a lot of poor habits simply because he was always taller than the opponents.

I'm not saying there isn't a player with talent there, just that he needs a lot of development to play at this level. Probably a lot more than Ridley at any rate.

  • 45%+ FG
    35% 3FG
    70%+ FT

    +8+ Rebound margin.

    Hopefully more assists than turn-overs.

Honestly, I can't say for sure....Terry's been pretty secretive (no open practices except for a very low-key scrimmage) and I wasn't able to make it to the exhibition. I will note that Fresno State finally hired an S&C staff last offseason, something we've always lacked. The added weight was from an interview Terry gave to the Fresno Bee (He also mentioned Upshaw has lost some weight).

Like I said, I think Texas takes this one. It might be different if we had all our players, but that's just how it is.

Terry wants this game so bad he can taste it... he knows the benefits it can bring to the program.

I don't think it will be easy by any stretch. Terry knows Rick's head, which is an advantage, and maybe a disadvantage.

    Good luck!

Nothing as of yesterday. Still in the hands of the NCAA. A waiting game.

  • I think you will see the flex offense again from Texas.

I'm interested to see err..."hear" if Texas changes defenses much, or goes aggressive man-to-man for 40 minutes.

Low scoring, defensive game that ends with a Texas victory, imo. Not having Kabongo will hurt obviously, as you said.

Looking long-term @ your program, I would start looking @ the better HS players around the Toronto area for 2014 & 2015...just a guess

I have less of a feel for how this team will perform than any other Texas team since Mays and Blanks were on the court. I think the following will happen with or without Kabongo.

    1. Barnes will send alot of guys to the glass on both ends. This team has a little size and will need to dominate the boards.
    2. Texas will play pressure man to man defense for not more than 40 minutes, but not less than 35 minutes a night.
    3. Texas will appear to be somewhere between painfully inept and moderately bad at floor spacing.
    4. McClellan will not be assertive enough to make Texas fans and Rick Barnes happy.

I think they probably beat Fresno by wearing them down by throwing alot of bodies at them.

Elaborate please? I'm drawing a blank.
If you're speaking to location of recruits, almost all of the guys we've pulled in thus far have Big-12 ties or are from that area.

It's a reference to previous recruiting practices by Terry.

Of course, I don't know if Kevin Thomas has picked a destination for 2013.
