Durham Smythe taking an unofficial visit to UT tommorrow?

  • On Smythe, let's see...his family lives 50 miles away, he played at Belton with UT's starting quarterback who is recruiting him, he's coming to UT's Spring practices, UT has a fine medical program. Hmmmm. Of course I also predicted that Obama would never be elected and that DGB would come to UT. Where did I leave that damned cup of tea leaves?

    Bobby,

Any truth to a rumor Tx has been in touch with Vonn Bell out of Georgia?

Would not be surprised. Great player and Texas is taking its time at DB.

  • Mods, I know that the secret commit is said to be waiting to announce till the time feels right. Is there anything you can share with us as to why the time is not yet right? contemplating other offers or visits before announcing? Not sure what time could be better than right now with all the studs we have committing on a nearly daily basis.

Not sure why but he seems to be interested, at least publicly, in making other visits.

    Bobby,

If this recruit committed and knowing Mack's policy of committed players not taking other visits would this still apply or are we maybe talking about a special situation?

Why do you think Longhorn in OK posts so much? Haha

Smythe would be a huge get for Texas IMO solely because it would give RS-J a little more flexibility to find his spot on the field without the pressure of feeling like he has to be an answer at TE. If Texas doesn't land a true TE in the 2013 class the coaches may want to force the issue a little more, instead of letting his body progress naturally.

With the above quote in mind, my guess is Darius James...

Just my opinion, but James would probably have to commit a felony to have his offer withdrawn. We need a center in this class and he may be the best in the country.

While the player committed to the staff, the staff did not take that commitment and told the young man to go home, think about it and talk to his parents and then call them when he was ready. That player has yet to make that call.

Interesting. I don't believe Samples has continued taking visits so it must not be him.

Don't know if it means anything, but he's supposed to visit Tech this weekend:

"I had been talking to Coach Brown about getting down to Texas Tech's junior day. I've already booked my plane ticket. I'm going to go down there Friday and spend the weekend down there," he said. "I'm just looking forward to seeing the facilities, the scheme, just the different way that they're going to use me. Things like that."

Coach Brown could also be referring to Texas Tech's offensive coordinator.

I was about to post the same thing.

I do agree with Dave though, if Samples were talking to Mack Brown about visiting Tech, it would be VERY interesting!

  • Ha...sorry. Didn't think about the two coach Browns. Here's more from the Tech Rivals' article to clear it up:

The coach that Samples has been in contact with the most is offensive coordinator Neal Brown. The two have been talking over the itinerary for the weekend, and the receiver will get a full taste of what Tech has to offer.

"We've just basically been talking about the visit, the things I'm going to see when I come down there, just the scheme. He wants me to see the practice, things like that. Just football and academics basically."

One of Samples teammates, cornerback Will Barrows, committed to the Red Raiders on Tuesday and the speedy wideout couldn't be happier for his friend. Samples is not determined to play with Barrows on the collegiate level, however.

"Will's good and he's a good DB. I'm really glad that he committed to Texas Tech. I think he's going to fit in good up there and play good, but at the end of the day, I've got to do what's best for me. It would be a good thing if we end up together, but it's not just something that I'm bent on."

Somebody asked me if it was Beavis the other day and looks like they were right. You can be Butthead if you want. :)

Yup, that's some artist's model of real life Beavis and Butthead. Scary for sure.

This feels kind of weird to me, like there's got to be something else at play for the staff to just not accept a commitment. I get that he should talk it over with his parents but it's like they suspected something. Probably doing a poor job of explaining this but it the whole thing seems odd.

Both of his parents were not at the junior day.

Oklahoma is scheduled to receive cable service sometime next year. Satellite in 5 years. There'll be other attractions for him. Cable's been dependent on easements through Arkansas but that's been negotiated to everyone's satisfaction. Seems the CEO of one company married the CEO of another and they're brother and sister. Question on the Arkansas bar exam: If a husband and wife divorce in Arkansas do they remain brother and sister?

Hey brother, just kidding. Glad there's someone with some sense in Oklahoma.
