Because petty people will hold grudges against other posters and it wouldn't be conducive to discussion of other non-political or non-religious topics. Sounds dumb, but it happens.

and because that stuff inevitably spills into other threads that are about UT sports. it has happened on numerous other sites, and it will happen here.

Any chance you could enlighten us as to who these people are so we all know who to avoid. If we all keep what we believe to ourselves without posting we may as well shut down the site.

Anyone who engages in metaphysical speculation and/or hatred of other people for who they choose to love, on an amateur athletics site.

  • I have never been to the OT thread on this board. I probably would not care for it so I do not waste my time. It has not hampered my experience on 247. If Bobby chooses to put one or another one on it will not bother me. I come here for sports and it is what I get. HOOKEM!

  • I support on OT board, if nothing else to keep the main board clean and free of that crap.

  • Many people on this thread aren't obviously business people.

A Religion and politics discussion would bring clients almost everyday year round when sports will always be seasonal. Geez if you don't like the discussion then don't open it up!!

Love how people want to shut others up because of their thin skin these days. Everyone is always offended it seems. Let the Other Topic discussion exist and let politics and religion be a part of it.

As long as it is policed from people physically threatening each other then who cares about divisive or heated debates? Again if you don't want to participate or view it THEN DON'T OPEN IT UP.

  • Never really saw the point in a Hookem.com OT board. Likely 5 people would participate and it would just be pointless. Network-wide OT board makes more sense.

Yeah, but I'm not paying money to discuss or read about that crap. I'm here for Texas Sports, period. Hence the "Texas" and "Sports" in texas.247sports.com.

    This isn't Texas247ReligionPoliticsMusic&Sports.com.

You want to discuss all that crap, go to somewhere else, or start a new website. You have my blessing.

    lol

Addendum: What the hell does it matter if people are "business" people or not. It's not all about making money. If that's what this site was all about there would be all kind of porn spam links and advertisements for Cialis and Viagra. It's a shame you can't shed the "business" perspective when it comes to Texas Sports.

  • And another thing. This is one of the best boards in the entire 247 network when it comes to growth and discussion about sports ONLY. Why would Bobby and the rest of the staff even need to include other topics at the risk of alienating posters like myself that come here to get away from all that crap? In short. They don't. The site is doing very well without having to include threads with discussions about religion and politics. As soon as that becomes an intergral part of the board, I'll cancel my subcription. I do not wish to contribute fiscally to such pointless discourse.

If this site opens up to political and religious discussions like the recently locked thread I will be gone. This is a sports site. There are other places to discuss your feelings on those other subjects.

This type of posting destroyed Inside Texas and I would wager it would do the same thing here.

No, an OT board would be a good thing - just have a rule that there are no political or religion discussions to be allowed. They are too divisive. It's been stated by multiple OB posters that the reason they stay at OB instead of coming here is because of the community - not because of the sports coverage. It's also the reason we lost many of the original hookem.com members when the boards merged... no community, just sports talk.

If the OT board exists, it doesn't affect this board at all. If you don't want to read OT stuff, just don't go to that board. I just don't see the harm. Have a group of community moderators to keep any topics from getting out of hand since the mods here are busy. It should be relatively simple. If it doesn't work out, get rid of it... at least then you can tell people who request it that we tried it but it didn't work out.

    gotta disagree here.

Maybe multiple OB posters like OT boards, but it was always a pissing contest when anyone brought up OT posts, or the dreaded, "let's eleiminate OT posts" post.

The OT board over there is very sparse, with a few very load guys. Those are most likely the ones who want that stuff here.

This is Texas 24/7 sports.com. That's what it is. Not Texas sports and other stuff.com As opposed to, "if you don't want to read OT stuff, don't go there", I say, if you want OT stuff, go to a OT board. This isn't an OT board, it's a sports board. If you go to a country living board, they won't have a "Life in Manhattan" board.

I don't have anything per se against OT boards, I just believe this is a Texas sports board. Not a BBQ board, or whatever else.

For those (I I personally believe it would be a small minority) people who don't come back here because they feel they need OT board to make it a community, well, they are missing out. I'll bet as many that don't come back here, actually don't go there becasue of all the inane OT posts. And having "regulations" means a mod has to waste time baby sitting, and it still invariably goes loco anyway.

I feel this is a community - just a sports one. I'll disagree with the notion that you need OT stuff to be a community. Nothing wrong with that. BBQ sites don't have Texas football recruiting updates, and I'm fine with that.

    Just IMO

  • I would say no to an off topic board. There are places at the Shag or The Corraliban where any subject is fair game, and any manner of speech you care to engage in is allowed.

The one OT's thread is enough. This site is UT sports, and only UT sports run by the best UT sports staff going. That in and of itself is more than enough to guarantee it's success without delving into nonproductive offshoots to satisfy a small percentage of the posters.

If anything I'd allow a UT networking board, but much beyond that is asking for trouble.

  • OT boards used to make sense....like in 1998. But now there are message boards all over the internet for a variety of topics, probably ALL topics.

THIS MESSAGE BOARD IS FOR LONGHORN SPORTS AND RECRUITING.

If you want to talk about something else, go somewhere else. You'll get a better discussion anyway. If you must know the opinion of someone here....use the PM feature. It also exists for a reason.

    Thus endeth the lesson.

  • From a traffic standpoint, unless the staff can generate new articles/discussions daily then traffic will drop in the summer.
An OT board may stagnate that a bit.
I would have to look at the analytics on other sites before making the call.
But you have to weigh the positives vs the negatives.
If your content is strong (which this site has) then no one is going to stop subscribing to your product because of some discussion on a board that they aren't required to visit.
The staff and it's content is what makes this site. Not the shitty posts by someone like me or some bozo on an OT thread.

Batronic: It's lepers. The Corraliban is made out of lepers. They're making lepers out of people. Next thing they'll be breeding us like a Nazi genetic program. You've got to tell them! You've got to tell them!

Kates: I promise, Bobby. I promise. I'll tell the board.

Batronic: You tell everybody. Listen to me Jason. You've got to tell them! The Corraliban is leprosy! We've got to stop them somehow.

  • I don't understand why anyone is bothered by a forum that they don't have to open. Makes absolutely no sense.

    gordosan

  • Haha - I don't really care if anyone goes to Corraliban or not. It's just an option. It's all Longhorns. It's wacky.

I just care that his board stays Longhorn sports focused, really.

What part of your internet experience has led you to believe that the majority of those with web access have any measure of self control or ability to reason? I would suggest that an OT's board would have to consider the lowest common denominator. Those that cannot help but open those threads and post any manner of inflammatory drivel. We have a plethora of those on the web.

....and yes El Guapo, I know what a plethora is.
