Did Auburn buy Westerman away from us?

  • It should get some attention tomorrow, at least I would hope so. All I kept hearing from Cam was that his decision about where he was going to play after blynn was a business decision. I guess auburn made the most business sense...

  • Of course they did. That's what cheating programs do.

  • remember when we lost that running back to colorado? Seemed like something dirty was going on there too. Although his uncle was playing wr for colorodo too. I hope Texas' hands are clean.

Texas has way too many rich boosters to be 100% clean, and there probably isn't a 100% clean program in the NCAA. I think the difference especially in Texas's case is that if Mack or Deloss find out, those guys are cut off from the program. Such that the vibe isn't one that is a culture of cheating.

I love UT, but I can't fathom paying players to win amateur sporting events. I really think gambling on amateur athletics should be against the law. If that was the case, I imagine some of the filth would naturally disappear.

  • I don't think Auburn bought Westerman but I can't say I'll feel sorry for him when he plays his entire career for a program on major sanctions.

Honestly, haven't read the thing, but agree. Not that type of recruitment as far as Westerman.

  • what type of recruitment was it as far as Westerman? Grimes was the key?

They allow a corrupt, vastly unpopular BCS system to remain in place despite the fact that it likely violates U.S. anti-trust laws, so I have no doubt they care less about this than we do. But still, Auburn and OSU just this year have very publicly shown a lack of institutional control.

I hear you, tend to agree about (outright) paying players in amateur sports...However, I'm torn here. If this is as widespread as MANY believe it is, what can realistically be done. I'm all for modifying the athletic scholarship to increase the monies available to those in the higher grossing sports (football/basketball) in the form of a stipend or in the form of monies being placed into some time of interest bearing account that is paid upon them no longer being on the team. I'm essentially e-brainstorming here.

Being completely honest, based on the demographics, most/many of the kids that are enticed by the money shake/pay for play are lower income kids, mostly African-American, that are looking for a way to help their families out. What is the answer? I agree with member Aristotle, who said "They allow a corrupt, vastly unpopular BCS system to remain in place despite the fact that it likely violates U.S. anti-trust laws, so I have no doubt they care less about this than we do"

Again, I ask...What is the solution? Something needs to be done to overhaul this system. The schools are raking in loads of cash off the performance of the players, and most times the players are getting "degrees" that they can't wipe their asses with once they "graduate" The following is a telling quote from the forthcoming Real Sports segment:
***McClover on camera: “It really turned me into a monster. When there’s no morals to what you’re doing, you’re just into getting money, I spent it cause I felt like I could get it right back. ‘(Speaking in third person) I don’t want to get a education, I don’t want to go to study hall, I want to get this money.’ It’s all about money. … The decision that I made, is hurting me right now. Now I’ve got to try to find a career, now I’ve got to try to find a way to educate myself so I can talk to people. I’m not proud of what I did and I’ve destroyed my life.”

couldn't agree more.....disappointed that his Dad couldn't see what is coming on the Plains.

  • I have to agree that I doubt any program is free of these handshakes. there are just too many alumni out there to be totally controlled. However, Auburn guy said the coach was handing him envelopes. That's not good.

The problem with adding monies to scholarships, which I kind of support, is that non-rich schools would have a hard time recruiting good players because they could not pay them as much. I'm sure that will be an issue.

    neonmoon

  • They don't need to start paying players, they just need to beef up their investigative unit tremendously then start laying the wood big time to offenders. Throw a couple of death penalties around and check everyone intensely from here on out and people will fall in line.

Take the billions you're making and invest some in a lot of new investigators who will be paid very well to dig into everything. I shall be the first to submit my resume : )

    JumpingTheGun

  • I realize the NCAA is under staffed, but why not hire more investigators and use the $$$ from fines (Universities or someone like Tressell), to pay the investigators salaries. If they find one big case a year, that lone fine should take care of several investigators. Obviously something needs to be done.
