Depth chart notes, changes for West Virginia (Big notes on D)

Not an expert on the X's and O's..but tri-starters at SS....does that mean all three in the game at the same time! What is Diaz planning for Gino!

I read that as a slight demotion for Phillips

  • Look, I'm as frustrated as everybody else seems to be, but as long as Duane Akina is our db coach and calling the shots, then I trust him to make the best decisions based on his assessment and behind-the-scenes knowledge. Nobody on this board is smarter than he is.

Hicks was on last week's depth chart also. It doesn't mean anything.

    This.

  • If Diggs moves to FS it helps his draft stock for next year too. Diggs is to short for a CB would probably go top 10 or 15 if he was moved to FS.

I think Phillips is just not a true safety. He needs to be the nickle and KV needs to be the safety

Interesting thought. You may be on to something. Phillips certainly produced better as a nickel last year than he has as a safety so far this season. If I were Akina, I'd consider starting Thompson at safety and having Phillips be the nickel exclusively.

I doubt that a move to safety would improve his draft stock. Safety isn't a highly drafted position as a general rule to begin with. Barron going in the top 10 this past draft was something of an aberration. The only other safety taken in the first round went late in the round.

And while it's true that Diggs doesn't have optimal height for a CB, the same would hold true for the safety position. There aren't too many NFL safeties who are 5'8" or 5'9". Short guys like Polamalu and Bob Sanders are the exception.

With all that said, I wouldn't bet against Diggs making it in the League at some position. Kid's just a baller with terrific instincts, some burst and the willingness to mix it up. His skill set might be better suited to be a slot/nickel type DB in the NFL.

Leroy Scott is the best tackling, best hitting DB on the team. Not even a thought at SS? Disappointing.

Akina has regressed big time in evaluations

Umm do you not know who Earl Thomas is? Btw Eric Berry was drafted at 5 im assuming you dont watch the draft much.

  • I'd forgotten about Leroy Scott. I'd like to see what he can do. Supposedly he's a physical dude with stone hands, but I'd make the trade if he's a reliable tackler.

I see three viable options at this time.

    1. Diggs to safety, his more natural position. Evans or Thomas (less bullish on him because he isn't as physically developed) to CB. Phillips #5 DB

    2. Scott to safety

    3. Phillips closer to the line and covering slot guys with Vaccaro playing more deep

Tri-starters is the lamest shit I've ever heard, and frankly neither Thompson or JT are the answer at safety right now.

I'd rather roll the dice and make whole sale changes to the back end. Move Diggs to FS, Vaccaro to SS and let Duke or Sheroid Evans get some on the job training (ideally this would've been explored over the bye week, but that'd make far too much sense).

Diggs is honey badger with better man to man cover skills, and he's being wasted sitting out on an island. Let him roam around center field and let Kenny hang out around the LOS where he is best suited for. It's not ideal timing but it's a move that needs to be made imo.

    Sounds good to me bro

DBU after all, so your right. But Im still with those wanting to mix it up a little at least....

  • I think Phillips is still a stud, and I've seen great things out of him. But, I think we basically have three Corner Backs and one Safety starting in our secondary. I hope that Hicks is back this week so that we can go pretty much two LB's and five DB's the entire game. I'm not sure that WVU will have the size and strength that the Okie Jr. team has though...

I still gotta think that this defense starts to live up to the hype. However, this is an offensive league with a definite challenge on a weekly basis.

  • I really hope we get Fera for this game, but something tells me this will be the kind of game where Texas has to score touchdowns and not field goals.. we will have to roll the dice a few times, if we find ourselves on 4th down and go for it, if we have to.. I feel really good with David Ash in a 4th down scenario after what I saw on the osu game! Good to hear some positive news on Malcolm and HIcks,,,

  • Damn, WVU has a bigger offensive line than Okie Jr. did...

If you have 2 starting qb's you don't have one. If you have three safety's you don't have any.

They are going to chop them up and sew the best parts back together to form....A SUPER SAFETY!

I don't see the J.Gray 'opp to start this game' and I'll raise you on the Joe Bergeron comment... Gray will get a few more reps, but I don't believe you start him over B or B based on a few carries in the game If JB is a 'step or two slower this season', then he doesn't make that off tackle run, change of direction/reverse field play for 20 yards in the 4th qtr.!

I think where JB really excels is catching the ball out of the backfield. Very impressive.

Disagree. Gray did some really good things, but how do you reason that those things were better than what MB/JB have accomplished? Not even close yet

Disagree on the disagree. One of those runs JGray made was something I have not seen either of the other do or even be capable of doing. Goes to his right, sees a briefly open hole and just changes direction on a dime and accelerates unlike anyone we have through and into the secondary. He is a true homerun hitter at tailback. Personally I would use Brown and Gray and leave Bergeron for short yardage or late in games.

  • Well, it seems like Cobbs is struggling a bit at LB... given our poor tackling and get "out physical-d" in the secondary, maybe it's time to give him a look at SS. I know he used to be a Safety before moving to LB, so it may not be such a leap for him.

Anyone seen Blake Gideon? :) I am totally kidding with that one.
