Defensive Observations: Saturday -- Cottrell's move, a new look

There were quite a few noticeable changes in the Texas defense in the second of two open practices, along with some big plays made.

My guess it happened earlier in the week and is probably why our sources didn't see him practice on Wednesday.

That was the strangest part of the report. So, you take a defense that plays the pass well but can't stop the run, and add another db and remove a linebacker? Even if Evans is DB number 5, I doubt he is more effective at stopping the run than Santos or Edmonds.

We'll run a ton of nickel in the season due to matchups

My overall thought watching the defense was that Manny has plenty of talent on his side of the ball. There is no excuse for not being much better this year.

I am guessing they noticed TCU led the conference in rush defense in a 4-2-5. I would rather see the best 11 play, than worry about the formation

The nickel look with Phillips seemed strictly situational. When Texas shows it's true nickel look it'll be Diggs covering the slot receiver.
