Defensive End?

  • What is going on with our recruiting at this position? Am I correct in saying that our depth chart next year will look like this:

    Jeffcoat,Sr.
    Wilson,Sr.
    Reed,Jr.
    Davis,Soph.
    Ridgeway,Fr.
    Bluiett,Fr.

So, after 2013, we will have 1 Senior, 1 Junior, and 2 Sophomores on the roster with any experience at all? Shouldn't we be hitting this position pretty hard in '13 and '14 recruiting?

Is Raulerson going to play DE?

Roberson is our only verbal in '13-'14 that I see... never understood why Giles didn't go after Fields or Hughes last year.

  • Might as well pencil Ridgeway in for a move inside.

Are we assuming Jeffcoat is back now?

Ridgeway inside? Has he put on a lot of weight? Why do you say that? If so, damn... that's even worse for our future DE position.

I would be very surprised to see Jeffcoat make the jump. The kid has got to put up an injury free season in order for that to happen. At this point, Jeffcoat is likely a 3rd or 4th round pick. Gotta assume his family doesn't need the $$$ like J.Charles and J.Finley.

  • I left out Cottrel... he is another '12 guy that is redshirting.

  • Ridgeway was always going to end up inside. He was just growing too much as a high schooler. We have a clear need for a DE and it's a little disturbing we don't have one committed. It's not like we don't send plenty of DE's and Hybrid Outside LB\DE's to the NFL. We Send tons of DL to the League.

  • I'd bet that Jeffcoat returns now too, but nothing is certain.

Ridgeway is listed on the roster at 280lbs. I have no problem with a bigger DE as long as he retains his quickness, but no way he's done growing. I would root for a monster DE but expect a move to 3 tech in his future.

The solution of course is to let Mack recruit a RB, what's Traylon doing these days?

Killing it in JUCO and will sign with the Mustangs. He's gonna be a good one before it's all said and done.

Too many 5 stars on our depth to give him a shot. I think he's every bit the back that Bergeron is.

I too think Ridgeway ends up inside as a 300-pounder

Bryce Cottrell has received some positive praise during his redshirt year.

Jake Raulerson is an OL all the way IMO.

Bluiett is still likely to be at TE.

  • I saw Tevin Mims playing some decent ball at South Florida early in the season. I think he has a couple sacks and 30+ tackles.

    Would have been nice depth.

  • I don't think there is a lot out there for 13. If Texas can land the 3 kids for 14, and keep an eye out for jucos over the next year or 2 I think they will be fine.

  • I think Nashon Hughes winds up at DE, but your point is well made. I think we have a similar numbers problem at Safety too (at least, high quality Safeties).

I think they'll still look for a 2013 Juco, but it doesn't seem optimistic after the Purdue guy went another direction.

The staff will likely have to bet the house on 3 big DEs in the. 2014 class - D.Robinson, S.Thomas, and M.Garett. We can't miss on any of these guys and they'll all need to be players.

At Safety, we have Phillips (sr), M.Thompson and J.Turner (jrs), and only Colbert, possibly C.Collins and A.Davis (frosh) in 2013. Not enough top shelf depth for a team that will play lots of Nickle and Dime in the Big XII. Ditto situation at CB, if Collins and A.Davis roll inside to Safety.

Personally, I'd love to see Sheroid Evans get a long look at Safety. He's big, fast, physical, and brings suddenness. I like him a lot more than M.Thompson or J.Turner at Safety and I think we're wasting his talent as a backup CB. Just me.

    Damn! Killing me!

What if Jeffcoat does leave after this year. Good chance his dad (and a good agent) could get him a 1st round grade. Hell, it worked for McGahee just fine.

    Then we will have:

    Wilson,Sr
    Reed,Jr
    Davis,Soph
    Cottrel,Fr

What the hell happens if we have an injury (or two)? Walkons?

I love Turner at CB/Nickel... Evans and maybe Leroy Scott would make decent FS. We need an answer at SS though. Colbert, I hope can pull that off.

Think Phillips is a better CB/Nickel as well.

Hughes would need a redshirt to be DE - wouldn't he?

  • Gerry any chance we go after Jimmie Gilbert? I saw the national article on the 5 underrated players in Texas which he was in.

More of an OLB body type. Wiry strong kid. Good player/prospect. Don't think he's a fit for what Texas needs.
