THE OFFICIAL RELEASE FROM UT:
Legendary Longhorns Football Coach and College Football Hall of Famer Darrell Royal has passed away in Austin, The University confirmed today. He was 88 years old.
Royal, whom the UT football stadium is named for (Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium), is the Longhorns all-time winningest coach. He posted a 167-47-5 record from 1957-76, won three National Championships and 11 Southwest Conference titles.
More information to come as it becomes available.
Update: ESPN's Ivan Maisel with a fitting tribute to Coach Royal. One of DKR's many colloquialisms, "There ain't a hoss that can't be rode and there ain't a man that can't be throwed."

Great man, great ambassador to the University of Texas and his work he accomplished will not be forgotten! Thoughts and prayers to his family and the Longhorn Nation. Sad day.

This man was one of my first sports heroes, and his early success in the 50s was probably the main reason I chose to attend UT. Sad, sad day. And Sundance Kid, shame on you for making a political joke out of DKR's passing. What I remember about the man tells me he probably was a supporter of the President. I recall that his retelling of his own impoverished background to Earl and Mrs. Campbell during Earl's recruitment was one of the things that swayed Earl to come to Texas.
God bless this great, great man. We've lost a legend.

Very sad day. Got to see him do the coin toss against Wyoming this season and figured it wouldn't be long. A story my father still tells about coach Royal is that him and my brother were snooping around the UT football facilities during the high school state baseball tournament when a tall older man came up and introduced himself. It was coach Royal and he gave them a tour of the whole facility. Weight room, locker room etc. I think my dad said he was doing a magazine photo thing and went out of his way for people he didn't even know. Something I'll think about every time I hear his name.

RIP in peace Coach!
Had the pleasure of meeting him on-campus a few years ago, just approached him and asked to shake his hand, he ended up talking with me for more than half an hour. I could not get over what a fine individual he was. That meeting will always remain a cherished memory.
