Daily 5: Five Big Games Early

  • bruthaman said...

I agree on the month vs week preperation. That being said, I dont think Sumlin will bring what he did at Houston to A&M. He will use some of it, but not all of it. Itll be very similar to what we run, which is not a spread but multiple. It could be 5 wide or I formation or ace package on any down. Some gun, some pistol and some under center.

I really dont know what to think about A&M season wise. I do think they will beat UF on the 8th. One thing they will get under Sumlin is some serious technique work and discipline. The way they lost focus last year in games they were way ahead in was amazing. That wont happen under Sumlin because he will use the bench as a motivator.

I'm not sure whose QB situation is worse...Texas or aggy

  • I have become more of a fan of college football than the NFL. Hard to believe considering I grew up idolizing Roger Staubach. The NFL has become boring.
I think the Ole Miss game could be bigger for the Horns than it is given credit. They will be a step up in competition over Wyoming and New Mexico and in an hostile environment. Pulling the upset against the Horns would be huge for Freeze in his first season. If the offense is still plagued by inconsistent play it could a game that will have us squIrming in our seats.
Really want the Horns at 3-0 and on a roll going into Stillwater. That is not a place to start conference play coming off an upset.

All Agdom will be sky high for the Gators. That should help the Aggies make a closer game of it than roster talent alone would indicate. Even a close loss will have the Ags proclaiming they can play with the best in the SEC.

This. Florida will be trotting out a QB they're not 100% confident in at that point in the season, and they'll be doing it away from Gainesville in a tough environment. If that's a night game I think it could be really tough for Florida to win that game.

The rumblings will grow pretty loud if Muschamp drops the SEC opener.

  • Saturday in the fall is bar none my favorite time of year. I can and do watch football all day. I turn on ESPN and watch gameday and I don't turn the TV off until the Pac 10 night game is over. I love to compare the other teams and players to the Longhorns and ask myself how we would match up. My buddies and I also make a point usually once a year to travel to a university we all want to see. If Texas is playing even better of course as I have seen them play at Nebraska, Ohio St and at the Rose Bowl.
I have seen the Cocktail party (Florida?Georgia) in Jacksonville when Tebow beat Stafford. I saw Notre Dame beat Michigan in South Bend. I saw LSU beat Auburn at night in Baton Rouge the year they won the national title and Auburn had Cadillac Williams. I can honestly state nothing beats watching college football on Saturday.
Now as as kid i would live and die watching the Dallas Cowboys but now I rarely watch the entire game and I never watch any other NFL game.
I get to cross another stadium off my list as we are going to the Texas/Ole Miss game this year.

Who will be a$m's qb? Talk about unsure.

It'll be Showers, and he'll look to take those 5 career pass attempts and build on them. 5 pass attempts is the total number of collegiate attempts for all of their QBs on campus.

Wow, that bad huh? I havent really looked at their roster much, but if anyone can figure it out, Sumlin can.

As for Ole Miss; I guess they can be improved, but they were almost good enough to be considered horrible last year. Couldnt stop the run, couldnt score, couldnt do anything. Unlike what some say here, their run defense is terrible, so running on them better happen if running is your thing. They do have some talent on the back end though, but they have to cover for an hour a play and thats hard to do. Maybe the new coach can change them up, but based on last season, they are not good. Wyoming would beat them.

No doubt. Playing in front of the home crowd should help though. The Florida guys got experience last year, but none of it was overly exciting. That stadium is going to be rocking, especially if it's a night game. Having just one warm-up game before the date with the Aggies (at home vs. Bowling Green) doesn't give Muschamp and Co. do get their new QB in a rhythm before their SEC opener.

  • I am absolutely watching Florida v. aggy. Big time game for both schools and I'm hoping Coach Boom makes a statement in that one.

I enjoy watching college football, err, good college football games. Don't really care who is playing as long as its an entertaining game. And if Texas is televised you can beat your ass I'm watching it.

someone with an AgSwag badge.. all you need to qualify and get the badge is spout off how great things are going to be and diss others (without doing anything to earn it).

You mean like he did at Houston in 2010?

Didnt he lose his first and second team QB that year? I remember it being a train wreck with injuries.

Houston did lose Keenum and Cotton Turner back-to-back to injury essentially. Houston played two true fish QB's after that.

Yeah, tough to find answers in that situation.

Yeah, tough to find answers in that situation.

So why do you think his current situation is any better? He doesn't have a wealth of experience at the QB position this year. He's got a redshirt sophomore that's thrown all of five passes. A redshirt freshman. A true freshman that struggled throwing the ball in high school. And a fourth QB that's best known for having a really good LT for a brother and is likey the third-string guy at best.

I guess I just don't see Sumlin as some great coach like you do. If Sumlin were some great QB guru, you think his team would have functioned better even with a true freshman at QB in 2010. June Jones managed it in 2009 at SMU. Sumlin won 10 games all of two times at UH during his five years after taking over a program that Briles did a good job of rebuilding. He never won a conference championship. His talent level was arguably towards the top of CUSA while he was there. Now he's headed into a situation where his talent level is at the middle of the conference (at best), his opponents are going to be consistently better defensively than anything he's seen at any of his previous stops, and he's trying to install all of these new systems prior to doing it. I just don't see a lot of success headed his way. He's doing well on the recruiting trail thus far, but I'm curious to see if it sticks should A&M go 6-6 or worse and miss a bowl game this season. I'll be impressed if it does.

If he picks a starter and he stays healthy, they will be fine. Sumlin is a good coach. He did a good, not great, but good job at Houston. He is recruiting very very well and in time, will have them doing better than people think they will. He will face better talent but he will also have better talent to compete with them. Now, I dont know if he is a QB guru but he is a good coach. Dare I say hes better than any OC in the B12? Didnt he beat UCLA before they won in Austin? They aslo beat Okst in Stillwater. Hes good. How good we will see, but if they give him time, he will make a very good name for himself and that program.

No, UCLA beat Houston the week before the Bruins won in Austin in 2010.

I do think they will beat UF on the 8th.

Why? (Not disagreeing with you -- I don't know enough about Florida's returners to make an assessment as to which team is likely to win that game. I'm just curious to know why you think Aggie wins that game. Is it mostly because they'll be at home? Or do you think Aggie would win that game even if played on a neutral field or at Gainesville? If the latter, what is it that makes A&M the better team at this point?)
