DC after Manny

  • GetHooked said...

I'd like to see Jerry Gray as DC for the Longhorns.

not sure they're going to want someone whos just going to bolt to the NFL at any opportunity he gets.

While it may only be a one year gig, it could also be viewed as an audition for the full time gig.

This is just my personal opinion and I have no facts to back it up. You are correct that if Mack was to can Manny and get Chavis that could only be a 1 year gig before Chavis moves on to something bigger. That would be a real possibility. But in my opinion Mack should focus on bringing in someone who knows how to be a DC and has decent odds of sticking around for a while. I don't see this topic discussed very often but Mack can't keep DCs for a while now. Mainly because he has brought in hired guns. This isn't a great way to do things for long-term consistency. Look at some of the really good HCs over the years and many times you see a guy who has been able to keep his coordinators for an extended time. Paterno and Bowden were examples.

Now I know some will disagree with me on this idea and I even admit there are tons of examples that this hasn't been the case. But again just my opinion I hate it that Mack seems to go for the hired guns especially at the DC level and the long term consistency is non existent. This is one of the primary reasons why I wish Mack would of hired Jerry G. for DC a long time ago. And I know some of Jerry's Ds in the NFL have been iffy, but he is a lifetime Horn and he knows what he wants to do in running a D.

  • I would throw $1.5M at Chavis and see if he's willing to bite

Diaz handicaps the defense. Essentially we are playing 9 on 11, since he sticks the safeties 20 yards off the line of scrimmage. We don't have enough guys in the box. The safeties should by between 10-12 yards on 1st/2nd down. We can play them farther off the LOS on 3rd and long. We are making it so easy for teams to run on us. Our DE's take an outside technique and then you have 3 on 3 with the C & 2 guards vs. the 2 DT and 1 LB, when we are in our dime package. Once the RB gets though the LOS, he free to run 10 - 15 yards before the safety is there to meet them. You just can't let team gorge you up the middle. It deflates the defense.

I don't think he'd work for Mack Brown at this point anyway.

I was more referring to them taking over as HC at Texas after Mack moves on.

But you're right, continuity would be nice. Not sure that'll happen till we find Mack's replacement.

already interviewed Shannon when Manny was hired, don't see that happening.

would be interested in hearing the Mods insight on Manny's replacement.

Right, how's that decision looking right now? May want to revisit it....

  • You guys need to look at Shannon's body of work and consider the talent he faced and the talent he had. I'm not impressed.

He'll be getting 200K a month to not coach for the next year or so, so I bet he sits out a year and comes back as a HC somewhere. Or sits out 2-3 years and collects 6'ish million.

I'd probably move to Jupiter, Fla. and tee it up at Medalist Golf Club for a while.

Heard his buyout may be too high for AU to get rid of him

It seems like Manny is sitting out of football right now and collecting a nice paycheck. Why has Greg Davis' name not been mentioned as our next DC. He can stop an offense better than Manny.

  • Unless Mack goes I don't think Manny goes. Mack has one or two years left, tops. He's not going to be coaching longer than David Ash is going to be playing. There are only two groups of coaches who should consider stepping into that situation:
    1. guys who were successful then slipped and are looking for redemption (see Kevin Steele);
    2. guys who are not likely to get upper echelon jobs any time soon and are willing to gamble their career on a single year under Mack (analogous to John L. Smith as a HC).

I'm not sure either of those is preferable to at least maintaining some continuity. That being said, my preference remains for Mack to hang it up and take Manny with him. Both have bright futures as ESPN commentators but not as coaches.

    RufusWasMyPapaw

  • First off, I want a new HC for Texas football, and although I do really like Bryan Harsin and Applewhite, I'd let that coach pick his staff as he chooses. If we have to endure another year of Mack, I'm not sure how interested I am in seeing a new DC. I think whatever new guy we could convince to come into this situation is probably not preferable to simply giving Manny an opportunity to get his shit fixed. The reality is that we aren't going to get back to MNC caliber until Mack is replaced, no matter who the assistants are.

I think my ideal scenario would be Chris Petersen taking over and keeping all but Chambers around on offense with an entirely new defensive staff (though it would sting to lose Bo Davis). Option B would be Gary Patterson and if he wants to run a different offensive scheme then so be it.

    whereiend

  • Randy Shannon? Hell no. If he were Texas good he'd have a real DC job right now. Instead, he's coaching LB's at TCU.

Gene Chizik? Double hell no. I know the 2007 defense gets laid at the feet of Akina and MacDuff, but Gene has just as much blood on his hands for that debacle.

I happen to think Rufus is right. I don't think Manny will go anywhere. For one, it would be Mack admitting that he made a mistake. Two, I don't think Mack wants to break in another defensive coordinator.

Mack will come up with some BS line of reasoning that has something to do with how explosive Big 12 offenses are and how he expects a lot of improvement with kids entering their 3rd year in the system.

If Mack somehow did fire Manny, I would be scared as hell that Kevin Steele would be the choice. I think there is a real chance that could happen and it would be an utter disaster.

If I allowed myself to live in a fantasy world where Mack made the right decision and was interested in hiring the best possible DC, then I might be inclined to look at someone from this list:

    Bob Diaco - Notre Dame
    Justin Wilcox - Washington
    Lorenzo Ward - South Carolina
    Mark Stoops - FSU
    Pat Narduzzi - Mich State

It really doesn't matter though. Nothing is going to get any better until Mack is gone.

I want whichever DC will copy the blueprint KSU uses for their defense. We need to be more physical.

The K.State crew along with Mike Stoops have figured out how to stop spread offenses.

Mike Stoops used to give Leach ulcers....

  • When Auburn fires Chizik bring him back as DC

    TXbravehorn

  • Chizik sucks. That was becoming clear when he jumped ship for ISU.

And Caver (among others) is absolutely right. Diaz will not get fired. Mack has planted plenty of seeds today that spells it out clearly.

Diaz will remain in charge. No doubt in my mind.
