I'd disagree, Edsall is a very good coach but he doesn't have the skins of Leach. He hasn't taken a desert wasteland and with limited resources had them top 10 in the country and a lot of consecutive winning seasons going against a conference that features many schools with superior resources and talent.

Ok, we'll disagree. I think Edsall took UConn from a Division II school to Big East champion during his tenure with a lot of guys that the rest of the Big East passed over.
Yes, the Big East is not a great conference, but they may have 10 guys total on scholarship from the state of Connecticut. Not exactly a hotbed.

If the Big East had Texas, OU, or even the likes of Nebraska then Edsell wouldn't have won jack. I think he did a great job there but he never had to go up against the big boys in conference, and when he did see one in OU he got curb stomped.
Leach never finished Top 10 but he had several top 10 teams during the season that met a more powerful opponent. His 2005 team was undefeated and #7 in the nation when he met the greatest CFB dual threat QB and team of destiny/future NC winner. But I digress, we'll agree to disagree as you wish.

I just don't get how you can give this much credit to a head coach who showed a blatant disregard for anything other than offense. He destroyed lesser competition, but could never consistently beat the big boys, certainly never on the road.

Tex................I think you have to look at what Tech is and especially who they were before Leach arrived in Lubbock. Tech had some success but their seasons were for the most part were 6-5 or 7-4. They beat Texas a few times (Aggies all the time) but they didn't contend for Big 12 Championships etc During Leach's tenure they won 8-11 games per year and contended for Big 12 Championships plus played many times on national TV. They also won bowl games instead of just making the games. Programs like Tech need "gimmicks" to take their program to another level............Leach did that. Plus he began in his last 2 years to get better on defense.

When he looks in that mirror he'll see two things: it definitely wasn't for lack of wins or issues with recruiting integrity. They had a program that was clean (as far as anyone could tell) and a winner and they bailed because they didn't like the coach's personality. Perfect cut off the nose to spite the face scenario. Now they're in bed with a reputed cheater and a guy with a lot of baggage over his head (Jim Donnan anyone?). I hope Tubbs pulls the same crap there and they get exposed and slammed with sanctions

Leach has baggage............there is no doubt. As an employee he would be difficult to manage. He doesn't like fund raising and speaking to alumni.........but with the big things he record is very good. He wins every year, goes to a bowl game and wins the game. His players graduate (they lead the Big 12 every year) and they had very few off the field issues. Craig James kid is a bad kid and remember James was at SMU when players received cars, cash and prostitutes on a regular basis..............in other words the James family has zero credibility.

Great post. One nit to pick: They didn't get rid of him because they didn't like his personality; they got rid of him because they didn't want to pay him what he negotiated. I don't think they gave a crap about his personality. Craig James getting uppity just gave them the reason to do what they needed to do.
