haven't been following the boards much since the depressing game on Thanksgiving so I apologize if this has already been asked/hashed-out several times. I think Diaz is gone and Chizik might be an ideal type mercenary to come in for one or two years until Mack hangs it up. We know Chizik can coach defense so I would be glad to see this happen but I don't know if Mack and Gene burned any bridges after the last stint.
Gene Chizik is terrible. His 2nd year as our DC was utterly unremarkable and the trajectory of his unit was pointed due south.
He would be a terrible hire. No offense here, but he shouldn't even be on the short list.
Carl Torbush was a much better DC under mack than Chizik....do you want to hire him too?
Chizik only looks ok when you compare him to Macks typical disasters like mcduff, akina, diaz....
I think you should take a really long hiatus from the board - a couple months minimum.
Chizik is dog chit with a coaches whistle and a clipboard.
Gene is welcome back when he can bring a VY clone and 21 future NFL'er with him to play on the two deep. He's already bought....errr....found one VY clone so who knows?
I got brains. I got big ol' brains. I got dinosaur brains.
Given Mack's position here (short timer), he promotes from within. On D and O, if Diaz and Harsin both go this offseason. It's really the only plausible answer, unless he sees himself here longer than 1-2 years.
Anything is possible, really. I think posters here and elsewhere get wrapped up in what they and other vocal posters are saying. In the end, Mack (even now) has an enormous amount of capital to burn before he leaves. He's a good guy and no one with any sense wants to see him leave in disgrace.
I want change, too. I just don't want to burn down the whole machine in the process. My ideal situation would be Mack moving to Asst. AD or somewhere where he could be a great PR guy that would allow us to hire a true X and O football coach who could concentrate on winning football games.
Akina a disaster? Not sure I agree with that assessment.
He's a great coach who seems to be very respected amongst his peers and he's publicly known as one of the best in the business. Kids come here to play under Akina's tutelage.
He means as a DC.
Akina's stint as DC was a disaster, and that's being kind. He's a great position coach and one of the best man coverage teachers in the business. The experiment with he and McDuff was a failure.
Oh, okay, gotcha.
I thought he meant in his current role.
I also recall Gene Chizik and Duane Akina being Co-Defensive Coordinators back then. Not sure that either was fully designated as DC? Not saying that either can do the job if given full responsibility...

Chizik won't need anywhere because of his large buyout money.
If Mack stays, Chizik might be the best option available. No up and coming coach would want to risk their career working under a lame duck coaching situation.
Chizik would be a moron to take a job anywhere else unless he's guaranteed more than his buyout for the term of his buyout. Not going to happen.
Chizik gets $200K a month for the next 2-3 years as his payout from Auburn. If I'm Chizik, I'm headed to West Palm Beach/Jupiter to tee it up 3-4 days a week for the next year or so.

Chizik was hired as the DC after Akina and Larry MacDuff were Co DC's. Basically, Mack just got lazy and didn't go hire a good DC, so he mailed it in with those two clowns.
Akina is the best DB coach in the country (or was at one time), but he wasn't a good DC at all.
But the punchline is that Mack screwed that deal up and basically wasted a season because he felt like helping his buddies out instead of going and getting a good DC.
Mack is a punchline and always has been. He just got lucky with VY and Colt and then somehow had the smarts to hire Muschamp. Those are the 3 things he got right.....
Guys, I've heard some things that I will be passing on momentarily.

Our defense in 2006 was actually solid until Chiz started jacking around interviewing.
Chizik's D absolutely skull f'ed OU in 2006. Made them just quit we were hitting them so hard.
That being said, he is too married to keeping 3 linebackers on the field at all time and you can't do that in this league these days.
The idiot runs strong with this one.
1. Why would Chizik want to take a job when he's getting paid to essentially do nothing?
2. Why would anyone want to hire him with the NCAA back investigating Auburn for recruiting violations?
Curious to hear what's erroneous in my post.
You mean hush money.....are you aware that the NCAA is about to come down on Chizik, Trooper and the others cheaters.
If so won't that affect his buyout? Seems like I heard that he was terminated without cause meaning he gets the full payout, but if issues or violations were found that could change.
The first sentence. Which makes most of the conclusions in the rest of your rant based on that sentence wrong.
DC's at Texas (the ones who called the plays):
Carl Reese -- 1998-2003
Greg Robinson -- 2004
Gene Chizik -- 2005-06
Duane Akina -- 2007
Will Muschamp -- 2008-10
Manny Diaz -- 2011-12

I meant to say after Chizik, not before. So excellent work correcting the coaching order, but I'd love to hear how that typo makes the rest of my post off base.
Mack shit the bed after Chizik left.
