“He said I have to give a better effort,” McClellan said. “But I don’t know. I’m really confused right now by what he wants. He’s gonna do what he wants to do. I only played 30 seconds. My man did get an offensive rebound, but (Barnes) didn’t mention it.”
Yeah, all about effort and hustle. McClellan's been a solid scorer, but he's consistently not putting in the effort in other areas of the game.
He is poison IMO.
Barnes was worried he might accidentally play some offense.
Can't have that.
He tried to get his attention by taking him out of the starting lineup. That didn't work either. We're 16 games in and your best player is still dogging it in games. Can't have that.
And from the quote after the game it seems like he still doesn't get it.
Reminds me of Mike Davis' sophomore season last year. You can see the talent, just not putting it together. He still takes horrible shots, and I mean shots that no one in the history of basketball should ever shoot. That fade away contested jumper just inside the 3 point line is disgusting.
Since he is shooting .357 from the field, .288 bta, and has an a/t ratio of 0.9/2.0, it might be only by accident that he would play decent offense.
Sheldon is what he is. IMO, Barnes is most likely wasting his time trying to make Sheldon into something he isn't....it's like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.
Sheldon is a passive aggressive player and he probably won't ever change.
Barnes wants him to take charge and be "the man"...Well, that's not McClellan's personality apparently.
In a perfect world, Texas would have a superstar type player (like JCovan Brown) dominating the scoring most of the time, while a guy like McClellan is the #2 option and gets what is given to him in terms of open shots, drives, etc.
I don't know what's going on in practice, but McClellan would probably be a better player if Barnes would just lay off and go out and find a guy that wants to score and lead.
Apparently Barnes thinks at the very least he should play harder. I seriously doubt it has much to do with the offensive side of the ball.......although he dogs it on that end as well.
To be fair the rebound was off a 3 point shot(long rebound), and it appeared to just bounce over Sheldons head. And I am no Sheldon fan, but I don't think he deserved to be pulled for the entire game.
Not to mention we gave up what seemed like 10 straight offensive rebounds in the last 2 minutes of the game.
At some point, Barnes needs to ask himself, "are we a better team with or without Sheldon on the floor, and what are my options?"
If Barnes thinks he has better options, then play other people.
