What do we need?

  • I'm trying to keep up with who is "in" and who is "out" for regular playing time so far.

First off, need to know how many are in the rotation" for each position. Here's what I've heard so far:

    QB - 2
    RB - 3
    TE - 3
    HB - 2
    WR - 6
    OT - 3
    OG - 3
    OC - 2
    ------
So 24 guys on offense are going to get significant playing time, if you count the backup QB.

    DE - 6
    DT - 4
    LB - 6
    S - 4
    CB - 4
    ---------
So 24 for defense as well.

Does this look like the right numbers by position for the "rotations" that'll be in the games?

  • Need to add the FB on offense. Here's who I'm hearing Davis, Muschamp, and MB tip in their pc's:
    * means no one tipped to by coaches, just my best guess

    QB - 2 - Gilber + Wood*
    RB - 3 - Fozzy + Newton + Cody
    FB - 2 - Roberson + ???
    TE - 3 - Smith + Howard + Terrell
    HB - 2 - Whaley + Matthews
WR - 6 - Chiles, Williams, Kirk, Goodwin, Davis, Hales
    OT - 3 - Hix, Kelley, Mitchell
    OG - 3 - Huey, Walters, Allen
    OC - 2 - Snow, Porter
    ------
So 26 guys on offense are going to get significant playing time, if you count the backup QB.

    DE - 6 - S.Acho + E. Jones + Okafor + Wilson + Jeffcoat + D. Jones
    DT - 4 - Randall + Howell + Dorsey + Higgins/Kriegal?
    LB - 6 - Robinison + E. Acho + Earnest + Norton + Hicks + D. Johnson
    S - 4 - Gideon + Scott + Brewster + Vacarro
    CB - 4 - A. Williams + Chykie B + Curtis B + White
    ---------
    24 for defense.

So these seem like the guys right now who get in the games while the games are still tight.

  • QB-1-Gilbert
    RB-4-Newton, Cody, Whittaker, Shead
    FB-1-Roberson
H-Back/TE-3-Smith, Matthews, Howard (Whaley too as he gets settled)
WR-6-Chiles, Williams, Kirk, Goodwin, Davis, Hales (White too as he gets his feet wet)
    OT-3-Hix, Mitchell, Kelley
    OG-3-Walters, Huey, Hopkins
    C-2-Snow, Porter

DE/Buck-6-S.Acho, E Jones, Jeffcoat, Okafor, Wilson, Drav. Johnson
    DT-4-Randall, Howell, Dorsey, Higgins
LB-5-Robinson, E. Acho, Earnest, Hicks, Norton
    S-4-Gideon, Scott, Vacarro, Brewster
CB-4-Williams, Cur. Brown, Cy. Brown, Byndom

When the snaps are meaningful to somewhat meaningful. 45, but I'm quite sure I missed someone.

  • Thoughts on your list:

    * I think Hills and Shead travel. Hills will be a special teams guy.

    * Berryhill - I think - will be a guy at fullback. At least he was last I heard.

    * Eliminate Terrell at TE and add in Dominique Jones (elim D. Jones at DE)

    * White, Fitzhenry and Timmons are somewhere in there at WR, albeit at the end of the list, and not necessarily in that order.

    * Hopkins is definitely in at guard as is Ashcraft or Buchanan. Poehlmann at tackle is in the two deep there.

    On defense:

    * Higgins over Kriegel and/or Daniels at this point.

    * Could add Benson at LB and/or pass rush situations as the year goes by.

    * Byndom is ahead of A White at corner. Adrian Phillips is probably ahead of the young safeties. Expect all three of those guys to travel and play to get experience for next year.

You're really looking at 60 minus 5-10 depending on game situations.

  • I'd go with Gerry's list from a "meaningful" snap perspective. My list was broader.

    Follow on Twitter: http://twitter.com/BobbyBurton247

  • I think you gotta go a bit broader than Gerry, but narrower than Bobby. There are about 75 offensive plays in a game for 11 positions, or about 825 ttl position-plays, if I'm not mistaken. Try to rotate more than 25-30 guys into that and you just end up not really getting more even a half. Mack is on video record somewhere in the last 2 weeks saying we need about 26 on both side of the ball who can play when the game is still close.

Just read UTX quoting his source to say A White and A Phillips are going to get this kind of meaningful playing time. I just don't see how for Phillips with the other 2 stud backup safeties.

GD has said many times in the past, he wants 8 OL who can rotate through. Interestingly, his most recent qoutes seem to have lowered somewhat. Just hate that we would not let our true freshman lineman redshirt a year. That habit has been killing our OL pipeline and development in recent years. I've heard reports Ashcraft is not ready physically. Buchanan and Poelmann could be, yet is there really room in the rotation for 10 OL? I don't think so...

I'll agree with Berryhill at FB. I just didn't know who we had there anymore.

I could see Shead maybe. Not Hills at RB. I"m not trying to forecast special teams. That maybe where D. White sneaks in as well.

I can see White, but again, everything I hear is that he needs a year of developing technique before he plays WR. Fitzhenry and Timmons??? There is zero room for those guys in the "while-it's-still-a-game" rotation. Especially given that we'll pass less often this year than in past. Hate to say it. Timmons in particular, is reported to have problems getting off the line when being jammed. That is a non-starter if you are a receiver.

Agree on Terrell. he is too small right now. Move D. Jones in. I'd lost track of him.

  • So, here is revised narrower" list w/ Bobby/Gerry tweaks added in a few places.

Just looking at O and D, not special teams:

QB - 2 - Gilber + Wood [must bring 2nd QB regardless and get him some time]
    RB - 3 - Fozzy + Newton + Cody
    FB - 2 - Roberson + Berryhill
    TE/HB - 5 - Smith + Matthews + Howard + Whaley + D. Jones
WR - 6 - Chiles, Williams, Kirk, Goodwin, Davis, Hales
    "Reverse guy" - 2 - D.J. Monroe, Darius White
OT - 4 - Hix, Kelley, Mitchell, Poelmann
OG - 4 - Huey, Walters, Allen, Hopkins
    OC - 2 - Snow, Porter
    ------
So 29-30 guys on offense are going to get significant playing time, if you count the backup QB. That's an average of just under 30 plays per guy, which is less than one half of a game on offense.

    ----Defense-----
    DE - 6 - S.Acho + E. Jones + Okafor + Wilson + Jeffcoat + Tims
    DT - 4 - Randall + Howell + Dorsey + Higgins
    LB - 6 - Robinison + E. Acho + Earnest + Norton + Hicks + D. Johnson
    S - 5 - Gideon + Scott + Brewster + Vacarro + Phillips
    CB - 5 - A. Williams + Chykie B + Curtis B + White + Byndom
    ---------
    26 for defense.

About 32 plays per game on average, if it is a full game. That's one half.

Now in blow-outs, eg, Rice, more will see the field. But come TTU, I think right now, these are the guys for whom it is "theirs to lose".

Of course, we still have another week of camp...

  • On OL Mack specifically mentioned Poehlmann and Hopkins in his last PC. Davis mentioned Kelley and Hopkins. I'm surprised not to have heard Ashcraft mentioned by the coaches that much.
At WR fewer snaps available with the new offense probably means a shorter depth chart. I think the top 4 are set with Williams, Kirkendoll, Chiles, and Goodwin with Davis, Hales, Timmons and Monroe fighting for the remaining snaps.
At TE Mack has said good things about Dominique Jones and Ahmard Howard, but he always said good things about Russell Carter in preseason too.
Over on BON I picked Berryhill as one of "my guys" at FB. He could be our Owen Schmidt, without the crazy self-inflicted head injuries.
At safety there are four legit starting quality guys, so it will be interesting to see if Phillips and Cobbs can get time there this year.
At CB it's encouraging to hear Byndom has moved ahead of White given that the coaches sounded really high on White coming out of spring ball.

  • + already added Poehlmann and Hopkins, but I still think it's a mistake not to let Hopkins redshirt...

+ Forgot about Cobbs. However, I don't think he gets into the rotation for a month or so since he's just started practicing there...

I heard Berryhill was running first at fullback, last week. Not sure if Roberson was dinged up, or what.

  • Sounds like Norton has now moved into the goalline FB role...

Yep. No doubt. Norton and Hicks.

  • Some good football talk on this thread. I appreciated seeing both the narrower & broader playing time guys. Appreciate the insight.

  • Holy cow,

Just reread El Mahico for the 3rd time and realized I've left D.J. Monroe out of the offensive group.

No way does he not play. Trouble is, not sure where he goes. Is he a sub-b? Is he a flanker? A RB? What the heck do you call that guy?

  • He is our X-factor. I want to see him on KR because he is lightning in a bottle. I also want to see DeSean Hales play more. They are both blazers :)

  • X factor added:

    QB - 1 - Gilbert
    RB - 3 - Fozzy + Newton + Cody
    FB - 3 - Roberson + Berryhill + Norton/Hicks(only 1)
    TE/HB - 5 - Smith + Matthews + Howard + Whaley + D. Jones
WR - 6 - Chiles, Williams, Kirk, Goodwin, Davis, Hales
    X-factor - 2 - D.J. Monroe, D. White
OT - 4 - Hix, Kelley, Mitchell, Poelmann
OG - 4 - Huey, Walters, Allen, Hopkins
    OC - 2 - Snow, Porter
    ------
So 30 guys on offense are going to get significant playing time. Average 29 plays per guy per game = less than one half of a game on offense. Someone will get injured and this number will drop. It must.

    ----Defense-----
    DE - 6 - S.Acho + E. Jones + Okafor + Wilson + Jeffcoat + Tims
    DT - 4 - Randall + Howell + Dorsey + Higgins
    LB - 6 - Robinison + E. Acho + Earnest + Norton + Hicks + D. Johnson
    S - 5 - Gideon + Scott + Brewster + Vacarro + Phillips
    CB - 5 - A. Williams + Chykie B + Curtis B + White + Byndom
    ---------
    26 for defense.
