Because he hasn't done squat for 5 years, players have run amok, and this year's team flamed out big time?
UCLA continues it death spiral.
UCLA doesn't give a shit about athletics, must be something more than early round exit from the tourney.
It does give a shit about basketball. That's why it got rid of Lavin after a single losing season following 3 straight Sweet Sixteens. It gave Howland 5 years to get things back together because it is kind of hard to ignore a Runner-up, FF, FF sequence in a three year period.
i know they don't pay shit for football coaches, anyone (bierce?) know what they're paying for basketball?
He was at $2 million two years ago.
USC & UCLA both open...Rick Barnes has to be qualified for one of those jobs, right?
National Director of Scouting & Recruiting Analyst
They care about Football too, see Mr. Mora.
- God Bless Texas
Football to them is like basketball to UT - they care when they're winning. Outside a few diehards they don't show up when they're losing in football, but will in basketball.
Barnes had two very talented teams ranked #1 or top 5 then flame out and quit on him two years in a row followed by teams getting so progressively worse we just had one play in the College Bullshit Invitational and get their ass kicked in the first round. A team so bad it routinely got handled by a weak big 12 conference that's now losing to the likes of LaSalle. Yet we make no changes.

UCLA is a blue blood when it comes to basketball. They've had a who's who of the NBA come through their program and have a lot of banners in Pauley Pavilion. John Wooden says hi.
Just a thought, but Larry Brown back to UCLA?
I think UCLA will be thinking pace of play/style. The opposite of the constant grind of Coach Howland.
Something that gets prospects excited IMO.
I guess Phil's not coaching right now...
Actually, with no football, the Lakers soap opera, the Dodgers in mediocrity, & Kiffin running USC football, the next UCLA basketball coach could own SoCal along with the Angels

No, and probably hell no. Too old. Too much history of being in charge when the NCAA hammer came down. Even if he wasn't to blame for the vacating of UCLA's appearance in the finals, he was definitely there the entire time the wrongful conduct was going on in Lawrence. To add to that, he hasn't shown recruiting success so far with SMU despite being in the talent rich Dallas area. Maybe he still lands Frazier, but right now TCU has kicked SMU's ass in area recruiting.
I'm guessing UCLA will go for a guy who shows promise for a long stay.

I guess that eliminates Barnes as a candidate.
"Shaka Smart, Brad Stevens, Mark Gottfried, Billy Donovan and Jay Wright are on UCLA’s wish list, the source said."
Barnes to USC?
UCLA wants to keep one of the current assistants because of his recruiting ties and relationships with current players. I wonder how that plays into the hiring process. I'd imagine the new coach wants his own staff.

Especially a coach in big demand. While there aren't many UCLA level jobs opening that often, a guy like Smart would be wise to wait for the job in which he is not saddled by demands from the administration to do its bidding in retaining staff and mollifying players' sensitivities. Smart can tell everyone that if they want him, then they have to give him free reign.
Will be sad to watch guys like Smart land elsewhere while we flail in mediocrity or worse based on Barnes last few years here. Awesome.
This is from the LA Daily news:
According to SNY.tv's Adam Zagoria, UCLA is looking at Florida's Billy Donovan, Butler's Brad Stevens, Virginia Commonwealth University's Shaka Smart, Villanova's Jay Wright and North Carolina State's Mark Gottfried.
I have to wonder about Wright. He hasn't had much success over the last 7 years. Yes, he did sneak the 09 team into the Final Four with routs of 6 seed UCLA and 2 seed Duke and a squeaker win over 1 seed Pitt, but he has only one other Sweet Sixteen finish in those 7 years and only two finishes above 7th in the Big East, and he hasn't won a tournament game since 2010, when his second seeded team managed a 3 point first round win over Robert Morris before losing in the second round to 10 seed St. Mary's. He doesn't seem to be on an upswing. He spent 2 years as an assistant at UNLV, but the rest of his career has been on the east coast.
