Can't compel the production of evidence; ergo, no case.
I wasn't really very upset by the Miami investigation. To me that was the sin of the attorney acting in a fashion that might not have been in his client's best interest, not the sin of the NCAA in trying to use the attorney to collect some evidence for it.
But the Lance Thomas "investigation" proves the NCAA can't collect evidence and has to rely on people ratting themselves out. The rats who remain quiet will go unpunished.
We should just pay the players through back channels like everyone else does. If it's good enough for Duke basketball it's open game as far as I'm concerned.
The NCAA is willing to come as like a hanging judge on individual players when they don't have any proof of wrong doing; NCAA v. Kabongo 2012; but they act like enuchs when they deal with major powers like Duke, Alabama and Oregon. E ven when there is a smoking gun that a recruit received a sack full of cash its simply going to be swept under the rug.
Time for the feds to step in and make a law stating illegal payments to players will be punishable by a rather large fine. Six figures+, then the power of subpena is available.

It simply is what we have to live with. The NCAA is not much more than an enuch when it comes to institutions, except in the rare instances when a local activist press steps in and does the investigation for them. They shot their wad when they put SMU [a small private non-national institution on the death watch]. This is my own personal paranoia, but Austin, DFW and Denver-Boulder are probably the only cities where their local papers will turn on their local sports teams. At N.L. said, the feds have no role in this this. So we may as well get used to Auburn, Alabama, Oregon, USC, Aggie, LSU , etc getting away with buying recruits. I say Aggie, because they were at least a dirty as SMU was during the 1980's. Dickerson drove up at SMU in a maroon Trans-Am.
"Mr President, esteemed members of congress... We have a growing crisis in the Middle East with Syria using chemical weapons on its own people in direct violation of international law, not to mention the relationship strains this puts on us and the Russians. We also have the ever present conflicts with Iran and Israel that can kick off like a powder keg once they believe our word is empty...
But FUCK all that lets get involved in some college football scandals!!!!! That's much more fun anyway!!!!!"
