Sneak peek of 3 new products -- Help w/ feedback

  • Lucky

    247Sports family,

We are a couple weeks away from introducing three new really cool products to the 247Sports Player Database.

http://247sports.com/Player/Lorenzo-Carter-22968 (you can see these products in the image below)

    #1. Ranking History
    #2. Crystal Ball (version 1 of 2)
    #3. Skills (version 1 of 2)

Here's a quick description of each:

#1. Ranking History: Shows the "ratings" and "rankings" history for each prospect ... shows both 247Sports and #247Composite .. graphical illustration comparing 247Sports with the industry.

#2. The Crystal Ball: Version 1.0 of the Crystal Ball allows any recruiting analyst in the 247Sports network (both National and team reporters) to predict where a prospect is going to commit and sign and records the prediction date. The product shows users the prediction from each analyst and also gives an overall prediction percentage for potential schools. ... Version 2.0 coming later this year will allow all 247Sports members to predict commitments and will earn reputation points, badges and free time for their predictions. ... Version 2.0 will also allow other recruiting analyst in the industry to make predictions and contribute to the analyst prediction.

#3. Skills: The 247Sports national team has assigned 5 different skills for each position. The Skills that each player is rated on are specific for his respective position. Admins have the ability to add more than 5 skills -- especially useful when rating athletes and jumbo athletes. ... Version 2.0 coming later this year will allow 247Sports national analyst to craft a written evaluation as part of this product.

Disclaimer ... when you view the images below, please note that the specs for the 3 new products are "very rough" right now. Most of the efforts with the product team is on functionality at this stage. They will begin cleaning up the look and feel and usability factors mid week, once the products are finalized.

So, here's were we need your help and feedback. We are at a point where we are developing many different products/modules for the Player Database. This is a great thing, but we need to adjust our layout and prioritization of each area of the Player page.

For example, as designers we need to place the features that are most used and most important near the top of the page and in areas that best satisfies our users. I would like to take some time to measure your feedback on which products you use most often.

Please rate each product on a scale of 1 to 5 for most important to you:

    1 -- Don't use
2 -- Marginal value, could live without it
3 -- Solid value, occasional use
4 -- Needed product, frequent user
5 -- Great Product, use all the time

-- Please rate each product below with a 1 thru 5:

Crystal ball MUST track historical accuracy of the various experts, not just the accuracy of users.... it is very difficult to know who is trustworthy based on their track record. To offer this level of insight and ability to know who is most accurate in a realm which is dominated by inaccuracy would truly be a value. Do any in the industry have the guts to have their track record measured?

  • What you need to have is ability for a user to see every time a user down voted him and who it was that did it. Then increase the number of down votes per day to like 10. Less people would just randomly do it if they know you're going to retaliate.

  • The new information/tools are great but really I have a question and a concerned voiced by several the last 2 years.

We've been told that we can't get the basketball schedule or recruiting class on the home page because it takes way too much time for the tech people. Its the end of basketball season and the football schedule is still there with no basketball schedule. What is the excuse this time? There seems to be a different one for lack of recruiting information for basketball or common sense information like this the schedule.

We all enjoy Dave's game coverage and presser coverage for basketball but the other issues mentioned above would show at least an attempt to do what is expected from the customers...............

We knew it would take us 3 years to build basic infrastructure to the site. We are running about a year behind schedule. The balance has been to build "new" industry "stuff" will at the same time building core infrastructure features like schedules, user registration, article editor, etc.

We could have easily already built all of the commodity features, but that would not have made 247Sports unique at all -- just another copy of all the other sports sites.

Also, we have to build the features that the masses use. I could go bump basketball schedules to a higher priority and they make get 1% the use of new message board features. Its a constant juggling act of priorities and usage analytics.

Fortunately, we are making solid progress and getting closer to finalizing many of the infrastructure products.

I don't have a timeline for basketball schedules etc, but I do know that we are moving as fast as we can move and we are investing millions every year in building the platform. We are far from perfect and have a lot to learn, but we are trying and we will eventually reach our goals.

We appreciate your support and will continue to charge ahead. That may not be the answer you are looking for, but it's the truth.

    247Sports and BOL updates: http://twitter.com/sbterry247

  • But you have the time to do this? Plus time to add an OT board a few months ago I am not a genius at this stuff but your answer for me is BS. You and I know its priorities and a simple schedule for basketball or a story when a basketball recruit signs is not a priority at this time. I would have more respect for all concerned if you just said basketball is not a priority with 24/7 but will be in a few years.

  • They obviously don't care to support basketball, probably because they don't believe the benefit in new subscribers would be worth the effort. Especially for Texas.

  • I think you are correct about that ...not supporting basketball with the exception of Dave's coverage of games and pressers.......basketball while having a bad year this year is a big deal and has been for 25 years. Come on we are talking about a schedule..........and listing recruits just like football.

  • I joined this forum because I wanted UT basketball information. Just because Hookem had the best UT basketball at that time does not excuse the short shrift that basketball is given. It is sad that if I want to look at up to date "standard" information like a schedule with up to date media information or a roster with all of the walk-ons on it, I by reflex will go elsewhere. I did go look at the schedule pull down and lt looks like it finally was put in a readable format - not combining parts of last season with this season as it was for a part of this season. I do not care whether there is any basketball information on the home page, because I do not look at the home page. I have the Hookem Board topic page bookmarked - maybe that should tell you something.

I, too appreciate the basketball content provided by Dave, and he seems to do a pretty good job with the time that he has - the emphasis should be on "with the time that he has". I am afraid, that if it were not for the content provided by some of your subscribers, I would not be quite so content. It is rather obvious that the majority of information regarding recruiting, linking up content from other sites, including newspapers, etc. comes from subscribers. Again, I mean no lack of appreciation for the content provided by staff. When it is provided it is top notch and much appreciated.

With regards to giving you feedback on the original post, I support wholeheartedly the comment made by papa horn. I have already put much more energy into giving you the feedback that I think is important, than I think I should have to. Perhaps a little more thought should have been put into a better way of gathering usable information. After all, someone is going too have to compile all of your feedback. That feedback is going to have to be interpreted by the compiler, thus diluting the input a bit further ... gee! Maybe, some of that time could be spent bringing some of the information for us basketball .... Aw, Hell! Just throw the basketball dogs a bone! Would ya! ;)

I don't BS when it comes to my responsibilities with 247Sports. I try my best to be completely transparent.

I just read your response and you and I are on two different pages for the most part.

I was referring to technology products only. You may be referring to tech, but you are also talking about editorial priorities.

That is 100% up to the publisher and reporters on the site --- Bobby, Gerry, Jeff, Dave, etc.

I appreciate everyone that is giving me feedback today, but it is certainly optional. I thank you for your contributions.

For what its worth, I am the compiler. I simply want to know what everyone thinks about the Player Database. Feel free to talk about other areas of the site, but my main objective with this post was to gather thoughts so I can communicate them to our design team and engineers.

I have gathered a ton of good feedback from the 14 sites I posted this message on this morning.

  • There is more to it than that. This forum attempts to provide a comprehensive repository and reference for all things UT football. It would be nice to even discuss the possibility of that for UT basketball. It is just a thought, but maybe we need to just start a UT basketball specific board. May it could be a part of Hookem like Sixth Street - maybe not. We could have our own repository for UT basketball content from all sorts of sources - all duly attributed, of course. Who knows, perhaps we could provide content to Hookem. Just thinking out loud. ;)
