I was going to be surprised if he came back.
To take an approach that no one else is...where are we in regards to postseason eligibility? I know there is a proper NCAA term for it but I can't think of it off the top of my head.
Round peg, Square hole (perhaps a-hole). McClellan should look at Florida Gulf Coast if they manage to keep Enfield. He is an enigmatic player. I don't see Larry Brown being a solution for him, but Houston would fit.
Does staff know if Texas is looking at any JC's?
The APR? I think they've been perfect the last two years. If people leave, they have be on track for the point at which they leave.
“Kansas may wind up number one in these polls, but that would be so unfair to Texas...” -- Len Elmore, 2/13/11
By everyone I am talking about Texas fans that are fed up with the past five years and after reading today's paper are even more so because Barnes is getting a bonus this year. I never said Bond was a bad thing for the team but, I think it was Barnes once again not really giving the kid another chance late in the season. Now your second leading scorer is leading as well which would be your bad thing. I would think losing your second leading scorer would be a bad thing because that is two transfers in one year. Which makes people think what exactly is going on here.
Today is the first time I have heard of Lewis possibly leaving. He has a lot of talent I would be more worried if he went as well.
They need to
Great post. I feel the same way. I've been asking for a while of there was a backup plan for Randle. There's got to be a taller athletic wing out there waiting to hear from a team like Texas. Would love to hear Barnes' conversation with Myck about staying one more year, getting back to the tourney and maybe the lottery but he will declare.
respect your insight man, but that's still excuses. I never thought about your posts as sugar coating, but you just said that Barnes is running the wrong offense(Barnes's fault). You're also saying that if Barnes is fired, that UT won't be able to attract the names being thrown around and could end up as a worse fit. Sorry, but have to say that there may not be a worse fit for UT right now than Barnes. No offense to the kids putting in effort, but you can't just have a roster of guys that can't score. You can't have a roster in a power conference than can't shoot at all. You can't only emphasize defense and expect to win on a national level. This is not Texas High School Basketball with no shot clock. Its funny how pro analysts can jump into the tournament and realize this after seeing a little film.
I don't see Sheldon as lazy either. We know this from seeing Barnes himself on LHN. Sheldon simply was not the defensive player than Barnes wanted, nor was he the aggressive, take the game over scorer that Barnes wanted him to be during his sophomore year(sophomore...............sophomore..........not a senior...........we talkin about a sophomore.........sophomore). Barnes repeatedly yelled at him for not shooting. And he would even yank him from games...............after not shooting enough. Fine, do what you want to do as a coach. Your team. But then you replace him with a guy who can't shoot, can't dribble, turns the ball over without even going towards the basket just because he can defend a guy that probably wasn't going to shoot anyway.. I know coaches love effort, but damn, you're losing ground in the actual game.
Those coaches you mention haven't won squat without huge talent just like every other coach. The problem is, they'll never get the big time talent needed to win anymore because their personalities are known now.. I'm not a coach. But I played sports all my life, and there damn sure is a personality element to coaching. Especially when you're the gatherer of talent and the elite talent is so rare. You'd damn sure better be able to meld good to great talent or coach your ass off. At this point Barnes can do neither. This is not to say, guys should be allowed to run over the coach. But have any of the guys in Barnes's doghouse fit that personality? Maybe J'Covan, but he was more firey than being a bad seed. Why are we finding bad seed, bad attitude guys every year who are seemingly quiet guys? Elsewhere these guys are very demonstrative and outspoken. UT just happens to recruit the quiet cancers? I see a pattern.Perhaps UT needs more vocal and obvious bad seeds.
Is the solution and finding another coach easy? No. But at least money is not a deterrent for a good name. At least there is a lot of talent in the state. At least there are great facilities to sell. What is a "good fit" anyway. A good coach comes in, molds his players, makes them a unit and just wins. What are we looking for anyway? Someone that can coach basketball or something that knows how to rub elbows with wealthy alumni.
its incredibly tough to do it here with the crappy coach we have in place...
Hayden Christensen - to merely call him wooden is an affront to puppets everywhere...
Did we get a statement yet from the university saying Sheldon was leaving or verified that Lewis was as well? If Lewis leave the roof will have caved in on Barnes program. Two ships available; who in the world could he find right now to give them to that would help at all next year. Time to cut Barnes loose and get a new coach. I know some will disagree but what does Texas benefit from by keeping him for another year at 2.5 mill. Put it this way; if he was applying for a D1 job right now at 2.5 who would hire him?
Do you think $2.5 million is really that out of whack? This season aside, Barnes has shown relative success on the hardwood, would you not agree? Is he as successful as Donovan, Krzyzewski, Izzo, Self, Buzz Williams, Calipari, Matta, Pitino? No, he's not, but then he also doesn't make as much as they do. These days, guys like Vanderbilt's Kevin Stallings and VA Tech's Tony Bennett are making close to $2 million a year. Even Scott Drew is pulling $1.75 a year, and he doesn't have nearly the track record that Barnes does.
Is Barnes in a hot seat? He sure as hell is, and deserves to be. But let's leave money out of it. It's an irrelevant argument, and chances are, you don't make enough of a donation to have a say in this.
Disciplina praesidium civitatis
Chances are, not many of us make enough of a donation to have a say in this. It always amazes me that those who most likely have the least influence upon the making of these decisions, usually have the most to say - not that there is anything wrong with that, other than opinions are just that - opinions. But, I guess that a fan is a fan is a fan ... unless it is just a device for moving air.

Let me clarify... I don't mean that any of us here would have a significant influence on hiring and firing coaches. I just see a lot of posts that make it sound like they're somehow responsible for making payroll to these deadbeat coaches, which isn't the case. At the same time, these same guys want to tear down Erwin Center and build a new arena with some top hat Monopoly budget. The whole thing just sounds incredibly naive.
"Turnstile attendance at the Erwin Center has decreased during the last three seasons, from an average of 10,972 to 8,603 to 6,860. In 2011, when the Longhorns rose to as high as No. 3 in the national rankings, there were six sellouts — 16,734 — and one game that came close. But there has been only one sellout the last two seasons."
lol, all the while Barnes is set to pocket a $1M annuity. I wonder what the attendance will look like next season?

I think you are correct about Lewis...................I don't understand people who say they know something about sports who expect a coach to give playing time to a player who doesn't work hard in practice and doesn't play hard in a game (1/2 of the time). I don't think McClellan is a bad kid at all but it is not a good fit for him at Texas. Branch Rickey maybe the greatest GM and owner in the history of professional sports used the phrase "addition by subtraction"...............this is one of those situations.
"Leadership is wisdom, courage and great carelessness of self"
I agree with everything you said, except the deadbeat coaches thing.
First of all stop talking down to me. I have a right to voice my opinion hear like everyone else. Why don't you do some research on Coach Barnes conference record and NCAA tournament record for the past five years with the players he has had. Then come and talk to me about what I can say.
You probably never saw Sheldon in HS. anyone that ever saw him play in HS or AAU is not surprised by anything they've seen from him at Texas. Most just figured that getting coached at the college level and being so close to realizing a dream(play in the NBA) would be the motivation for him to tap into his potential and be the player many thinks he can be. He just doesn't seem to want it.
It is this kind of crapfest that makes it not so much fun to be a UT fan these days. I find it hard to imagine a time when we could all merrily agree to disagree about all things Longhorn as long as we all wore Burnt Orange. I have thought about forswearing posting until the mood around hear changed ... but, much to the chagrin of some of you butthurts regarding the possibility of my impending departure not with standing, I guess I am just as hard assed as you are!!!! So, Plbttttt!!! ;)
Wow!!!! That felt good! ;)
Votes up or down do not matter much to me, but if it makes you feel better, here is another post for your convenience ...knock yourself out! ;)
I actually think it is 3 years and its the best run by any school in any sport.............
Kid didn't want to be broke.
There has never been a horse that hasn't been rode and there has never been a cowboy that hasn't been thrown.
(in the vein of Mickey Rooney's, "Hey kids! Let's put on a show!" ... in the barn ... out back of the resort hotel where they all had summer jobs .... in New England ... in that movie ... oh, never mind!)
I saw where there are a couple of possible Samoan football recruits. We should oughta find ourselves a Samoan power forward transfer, so we could have Haka War Dance ceremonies before each game ... Man! talk about creating a unique Texas basketball experience! ... What? Salt Lick was started by an English Air Force Colonel an his Japanese war bride and her teriyaki based BBQ sauce adaptation! ... What could be more Texan? ;)
The school still hasn't released a statement about Sheldon yet. Could Barnes be on his knees with Lewis there as well? Or is he refusing to release him from his scholarship?
