So now James Patton (OL), Jackie Shipp (DT), and Kittle (TE/OT) are all gone.
Both lines & the TE's...something tells me the S&C coach may be next...Stoops seeing his OL & DL get soft?
Kittle was worthless anyways. It sucks that he's leaving.
Stoops would be on a hotter seat if it wasn't for how Terrible Texas was the past 4 years
Too many skeletons. I bet he's with OU until a scandal hits or until Stoops is gone.
He went 10-3, no one is that crazy.
At least he does something about unsatisfactory performance . His DC would not have gotten a group hug if he performed like ours did last year .
Note to Mack - you are not doing what you get paid 5m to do if you are playing Mother Hen to weak links on your staff . That our DC was retained after last year was a complete dereliction of responsibility on Mack's part and cause for his own dismissal if it reappears next year . Big gamble in the form of not doing what he doesn't like to do
This is simply false. Stoops stood by Venables year after year and he was awful.
Stoops is finally doing something but let's be very clear here -- Stoops has underperformed in Norman esp. over the past few years. You won't find a fan base that thinks more of Stoops than the Longhorns fan base. That's because he's made his Jihad/Super Bowl the RRS, and he's done a VERY good job there. Outside of that game though, his teams have largely underperformed. Getting his brother back in the fold was the worst thing that could happen for the Longhorns because Stoops wasn't going to change a thing with Venables - and Venables was just terrible. (check out the Horns winning streak and compare it to when Stoops v. Venables was the DC)
No Stoops is not some badass man of action - Stoops is a man who is feeling the heat of being an underperforming overpaid HC. Oh, I know you are all going to fall all over yourselves to pat him on the back for his Big XII Conference Championships - but I'll let you in on a little secret - they don't mean squat. There's one crystal trophy given at the end of the year and at schools like Texas and OU (as well as about 10 others) that trophy is the ONLY goal and any year that doesn't end with that trophy in the case is a failure. NO ONE gives a damn who won the Big XII in _____ (insert year here) unless that team also won the NC.
think about this one -- Texas is being questioned because they have 2 elite defenders that are being drafted in the first round and had a terrible defense. OU had 3 of the first 4 picks in the entire draft in 2010 and that team finished 8-4 and after starting the season #3 overall. Last year's Sooner team started the year at #4 - the year before that? #1. It's a team that has lost just about every "big game" (outside of the Texas game) that it has played in in the past 10 years.
Look, Mack has underperformed at Texas (esp over the past few seasons) but there's NO reason to point to Norman to find examples of how to take action and get a program back to the top. Want to talk about Saban and point to him as an example? I'm ok with that. Pointing to Norman and Stoops is simply looking at a different side of the same coin. A soft football team full of comfortable hires on the coaching staff and a bunch of people (outside of Mike) who won't tell Stoops anything he doesn't want to hear.
'How does one man assert his power over another, Winston?'
'By making him suffer,.'
Venables wasnt great, but he wasnt awful either. He didnt coach the back end of the defense very well, but other than that, he was pretty good.
I dont think Stoops is feeling heat. Just realizes that he needs a change to blow some oxygen on a stale fire. He is still the best coach in the B12, but he wants us on a national level. We will see who he hires to get us there.
There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.
Anyone think Stoops will take a run at Tosh Lipoi?
Instant West Coast top flight recruiter and DL coach.
1- the year OU went 8-4, and had 3 of the first 4 picks two of those players were hurt that year. Plus Gresham who went 7th overall never played a game after blowing his acl, plus losing Jon Cooper for half the season. To this day I still think that was one of his best years because of all the adversity, still going 8-4 with 3 losses coming by 7 points or less. The was the year Jones came in as a freshman.
2- after losing 4 first round draft picks in 2009, OU went 11-2 the next year, won the Big 12 and won their BCS game.
