Ashton Eaton ran 10.21 to start then went 27' on his first attempt in the LJ. Trey Hardee has done well 10.50 and 24'9", but Eaton is out of this world!
who is he? Can you elaborate?
Ashton Eaton - United States
Sport: Track & Field
Birthdate: January 21, 1988
Birthplace: Bend, OR
Ht/Wt: 6'1" / 185 lbs
Residence: Eugene, OR
Hometown: Bend, OR
What does this have to do with Texas?
Trey Hardee is a Horn alum and Isaac Murphy is currently on the squad. Apart from that, I thought there was some general interest in track and field on the board.
I am interested in T & F. Thanks for the post.
Not UT related, but Shelbi Vaughan who just graduated Mansfield HS, qualified 4th in the discus with a throw of 193'6". She'll need to move up one spot in the finals to make the US team, an unbelievable accomplishment for such a young woman.
It's an Olympic year. Post away.
When I saw the thread title I thought you were posting about a wide receiver who is a decathalete. Once I read the post I realized it was a world record. Football on the brain.
Eaton's 100 and LJ are apparently the best non-windy marks ever in those events in a decathlon.
Same here. The thread title made it sound like Texas was getting a receiver who was also a decathlete.
Track is fine for posting.
He has a chance but he has to come near or beat personal bests in the last two events which are two of his worst--javelin and 1500 m. He needs 1559 points in the last two events to break the record. His 1500 best was only worth about 820 and his javelin best only about 740, so this will be a close thing, if he can pull it off. He didn't come close to his personal best in the shot or discuss earlier in the competition.
The North American record of 8891 looks in the bag though. He only needs 1425 points for that.
This is great and love it when Texans do well including Aldrich Bailey. Unfortunately, both of these are going to A&M. I wish Texas would improve and become the leader in T&F. Seems like a no brainer with all the talent in Texas.
Not looking good for the world record anymore. Eaton managed only 721 points in the javelin. He needs 838 points in the 1500. That would be a time of about 4:15 or about 4 seconds better than his best time in a decathlon 1500. 4:35 should still get the North American record, so he should make that with ease.
No question. Just an otherworldly spring/summer for her.

Looks like Eaton did it. Saw a tweet saying he ran a 4:14:48 for 850 points and finished with 9039.
Well, he got it. Only 24 years old.

Some young freaky track athletes right now.
Beating his previous best decathlon 1500 time by 4 seconds is unreal. Decathletes are unanimous in noting the extremely difficult nature of the 1500 since it is placed at the end of two days of strenuous physical activity. Amazing feat by Eaton.
A 27' foot long jump in the decathalon is amazing.
Yeah, no doubt. Crazy.
