You're correct. VY wasnt maligned when he signed. There may have been questions about his development after he spent time on campus. But Vince was much ballyhooed just like the #1 recruit anywhere would be.
Does anyone remember the cheers when he first checked into a game at DKR. I think it was against UL-La? The place erupted. He made a couple runs. Had the bomb to Tony Jeffrey I think. Dave Lapham was fapping in the booth to VYs jackhammer feet.
As you already know AR its typical Mack BS.
Bobby - I was referring to '03 when we lost 65-13. We didn't have anything at all in that game. We lost 65-13
VY was 11-21 for 135 yards with 0 TD's and 2 Interceptions and a fumble... sure, he ran for a lot of yards but the QB shouldn't have that horrible of passing stats. I recall an uproar from a lot of fans calling for Mack to be fired, and for VY to move to WR or TE.
We didn't reach the endzone after the 2nd quarter.

Not true at all. bbliss is exactly correct. There was a vocal portion of the Texas fan base that wanted Vince moved to wide receiver.

No doubt. Edmonds could stand to lose about 20-25 himself.
Larry Porter needs to recruit anywhere he want and utilize his connections - the man is a stud!
You could tell he was something instantly.
The Texas legend's first game in the burnt orange.
This is what happened. A few loudmouths wanted VY moved to WR after Mizzou in 2004, but he shut them up pretty quick and went on a tear for the ages.
You're going to miss a lot of stuff.
No one wanted VY benched after that game. No one except maybe Chance Mock (who threw a pick on the first play of the game).
VY was the only bright spot in that game.
Mock came back in because VY couldn't do anything either.
Saying that VY was in anyway effective in that game is laughable... he had 3 turnovers and a QB rating of horrible. I recall plenty of fans bitching about Mack, VY, Mock, Benson, and the entire team.
First time I had heard the "move VY to WR/TE" BS.
When you lose 65-13 there is very few positives to point too. VY dam sure didn't have a "good" game whatsoever. Not even near it.
Nice revisionist history on VY there Mack uh... I mean chips...
I don't know what to tell Mack if he truly believes that the lack of commitments and amount of decommitments has to do with parents and high school coaches rather than the shitty product he puts out every Saturday. Good grief.
If that were the case, then what was Old Mrs. "pitch"... if UT is a shitty product, what the hell does that make them?
Don't know what you are talking about..................Mack's quotes were on signing day about Swoopes.(therefore the comparing VY and Colt on signing day).............it is accurate about Colt but false about Vince. There was some questioning of VY in 2003 and early 2004 seasons but not on signing (which was the subject Mack was talking about) Coach Brown is reinventing history (or lies) , like he tends to do, when backed into a corner. We all hope our new QB is a success................

"Leadership is wisdom, courage and great carelessness of self"
First off, I like Mack so don't misread me when I say....
Mack is fully aware that next season is make or break for him. So given this knowledge, he might as well say we are about to become "good" right? I mean, why say anything else? If it doesn't come true, he is gone anyway right?
He might as well load up the expectations, get everybody on the bandwagon, and let's give it our best shot. Given the circumstances and all possible outcomes, Mack must proclaim we are gonna be "good" next year, and David Ash has turned the corner, etc, etc.
Works for me. I halfway believe him. Halfway.
No, his comments weren't about Vince on signing day necessarily. From what I can tell, he didn't say that. His comments were simply about Vince. Just because you jumped to that conclusion doesn't mean it's the correct conclusion. Mischaracterization of what Mack is saying doesn't make him a liar, no matter how many times people on this board give it the ol' college try.
Why on signing day would Mack be discussing VY's RS freshman or sophomore season. Mack told a half truth.........Colt was true and VY was not. (he could have said Colt and Major it he wanted to 100% truthful) Therefore its not a college try............Mack when back into a corner lies. Its not nice to say that but hell he makes 5,000,000 per year and that comes with the territory.
He has is an unusually long strider for a short kid.
Ran for a lot of yards against teams that knew he was coming.
Why? Because he's trying to defend/deflect his currently maligned current QB commitment/enrollee by comparing him to two of the best QBs to ever play college football that also faced questions/concerns at some point during their careers. Mack doesn't lie. Mack is a skilled politician and chooses his words carefully. He doesn't back himself into corners. It's a large part of what drives people crazy about him.
Unless, of course, you were at the luncheon today and Mack specifically compared the three QBs' signing days. Then I'll concede your point.
"Swoopes is as maligned as Vince and Colt"
Mack constructs a strawman as well as anyone in the business. Actually as well as anyone on the planet regardless of business.
Wasn't at the luncheon but just reading BB report. What respectfully you are missing here is Mack told a half truth. Colt was questioned but Vince was not. To the uninformed fan that sounds good and that is why is gets by with telling half truths so often. Remember in 2001 when "Major was just a shell of himself?"..........until the Big 12 Championship Game and Holiday Bowl? Do you remember after the OU game this year when he said Coach Royal called him after the 2000 disaster and said don't be too tough on the boys? I think anybody who followed DKR's career would say (while very supportive) if he called Mack the conversation started "What the hell was that ..........."
If you don't think gets backed into a corner then we just have a different opinion...............he is in a corner and that is why people are tired of his act. For what its worth the class with the exception of choice of QB and DL is not the disaster some would evaluate.
+1 You said better with less words than I did with about 5 posts.
I actually liked Mack's comments here. Great to hear about Santos and what he said about Edmonds. We need to hire Ray Lewis to be a personal trainer for Steve.
Creating straw men and lying are two different things.
