Some of you may have seen the Yahoo article this morning and the travesty in attendance for the UT-UCLA BB game in Houston. For those of you who didn't read it I'll paraphrase.
Two traditional strong powerful basketball programs in Texas and UCLA are struggling this year which was most apparent at this game this weekend. Announced figures were somewhere around 2K for the allotted seats and even those numbers may be exaggerated. The article describes how that may make sense for UCLA travellers but why in the world would Texas fans not help fill in the 41K seats left remaining!
Texas and powerful basketball program should never be mentioned in the same sentence. It's an above average-good program. Nothing more, nothing less.
I was at the game. 2,000 fans is a pretty big stretch. I'd guess there were 1,000 people total there. For the women's game, I literally counted roughly 220 visible people in the stadium, although that was mid-second half and pre-men's attendance "jump".
As we've all discussed, the Texas athletic department has a ton of old man stink on it right now, and only the AD, his buddy boosters and the UT president doesn't understand this. No one is going to be excited about showing up to support a Rick Barnes team that lost to Chaminade. Texas basketball, much like Texas football, is becoming a cautionary tale of underachievement, fair or not, at the non-obsessed, non-alumni levels for CFB and CBB. The really painful lessons are still yet to be learned, but they've been touched on too. Merchandise sales are going through the floor. Walking into any store where Texas versus other stuff is sold and you can pick up any Texas merchandise you want while ATM and LSU stuff is hard to find in Houston. Just opinion-wise, it seems like less people are wearing Texas gear for the first time in what seems like forever. Beyond that, the TV numbers are down, and coming to a 100k stadium near you, the attendance numbers will be falling off as well. Of course the merchandise numbers have a trail on them and we won't hear about 2012 numbers for another year, much less the train wreck that will be 2013.
I hope the big money donors and Deloss Dodds feel good about what they think the school "owes" people like Mack Brown and Rick Barnes, who have apparently been working all this time for free, because the chickens are coming home to roost. It's going to lead to a lot of finger pointing and laughter in UT fans' direction from other schools. I'm guessing ESPN isn't feeling very excited right about now, either. That's the thing though, winning matters, and anyone thinking otherwise is lying to themselves and anyone else listening.
I can tell you about my lack of participation this year based on the product that UT is putting out. I usually attend at least 3 home games plus the ou game every year. Not this year. Also have stopped my trips to Longhorn Ltd. and Co-Op. Would usually go to the bowl game but saving my money this year. Sorry, if they want my participation and money they are going to have to put a better product out there. I will give Barnes a little more leeway this year but this year only. Brown has no leeway whatsoever in my eyes. Dodds either.
I didn't hear any advertising for it. I didn't know that the game was in Houston until the night before the game.
I hear ya. Went to one game all year and usually go to most of the home games and a local bowl.
Thanks to the LHN, I have all but quit looking for Texas games on regular TV with the assumption that the games are probably on LHN and not available to me. This coupled with a very poor product has resulted in the worst case of apathy I have had in years. I did not even realize we were playing UCLA, that is how low on my radar UT BBall has become now. I normally never miss a televised game so just think where the mind set is for the more marginal UT fan.
I am a UT grad living in Houston and I had no idea until Saturday morning that the UCLA game was here.
This will affect websites that cover Longhorn sports as well. I cancelled my subscription on TOS today. There's only so much depressing info I can digest a day.
Good for you.
More of that is needed.
NO MORE SPENDING MONEY ON BELMONT AND THE UNIVERSITY.
We all have an inner Aggie.
Very well said.
The attendance numbers will be noted by Bellmont - as they should.
Man, I would LOVE it if we had a game played at DKR with only 10K there.
That would be huge news all over the sports world and the ensuing pub would be a big nail in Mack's coffin.
1. Basketball should NEVER be played in a football stadium.
2. MD Anderson was willing to pay who knows what to tag the event with their sponsorship title. Why the hell wouldn't they invest in marketing and publicity for the event?
I did not even know the game was being played until I stumbled upon it while surfing channels. And then I witnessed how horrific the team is and I doubt I will watch another game unless I do not have a choice.
Just wait until 70k people show up to our home opener. I also suspect the OU game will not be well attended.
Dollar, dollar bills Y'all. The only voice Bellmont hears. When we go an entire football season without selling out a single game it will draw attention.
Pretty sure Reliant is required to host a game every few years to remain certified for its Sweet 16 / Final Four years. Many years ago Texas played Rice at Reliant in another one of these games and the attendance was much better. That should tell you all you need to know about the interest in this program.
It's all about the product on the court and pre-advertising. It was only a couple of years ago that Texas played Carolina at Cowboy Stadium in Arlington and drew 40,000.
Well if that is what it is then it should still have more support
It sounds like some people are trying to get back at the football team by not going to the basketball games. That is not going to work. I agree that the product Barnes has put out there has really hurt attendance over the last few years and UT much like football continues to stare into the cloulds like they don't know what is going on. And for the people that did show up; what did they get for showing up? They blew a 8 point lead with 3 minutes to go; that will get them back in the seats. I think Barnes is starting to realize this with his comment that we could be eight and one right now. We will see how many come for the North Carolina game. If they get blown out or blow a late lead you can forget anybody showing up for the rest of the year.
