Just wanted to say hello to my friends over here at Hookem.com. I don't have a lot of baseball notes for you guys but I did have a couple of things I wanted to pass along to you. I'm a writer for the South Carolina 247Sports site and one of the things I do is cover baseball recruiting. South Carolina and Texas don't go head-to-head a lot in recruiting but it happened in the 2013 class with one player - Andy McGuire.
Texas, obviously, won out and McGuire signed with the Longhorns yesterday. Below is a photo from his signing. Most of yall know a little bit about him at least. He's a Team USA guy and has all the tools to be a great player. Personally, I think he ends up as a third baseman both at the college and professional level. I don't know what the plan is that the coaches have set forth for him. I do know that the game comes easily for him. Watching him, he's smooth. He's athletic. He's not fast, but he's quick defensively. He has a great throwing arm and very good baseball instincts. As a hitter, I've seen good and bad. He has a simple approach at the plate and good bat speed. I think his best days are ahead of him at the plate.
One player I've gotten to know a little bit recently is left-handed pitcher and outfielder Trey Ball, who is currently ranked as the No. 10 player in the country by Perfect Game. I believe more scouts like him as a pitcher (and who wouldn't as 6-6, 94mph LHPs don't grow on trees) but I see him as a legit two-way player at the college level. Obviously, if he signs, he will only be relegated to one or the other. There are some guys who like him more an outfielder. College would provide him three years of doing both and, from what I know about him, he can excel both pitching and hitting. It's a lot harder in college to do both at a high level, but I think he can pull it off.
Especially for a guy his size, he moves well. He's a 6.8 runner in the 60 and has some outfield savvy. Obviously, he has a great throwing arm from the outfield. At the plate, he's got one of those beautiful left-handed swings. As he puts on a little bit more weight, he'll hit for a little bit more power. Obviously, it's hard to find a lot of negative in a player like Ball. He's an immediate impact guy both as a hitter and pitcher. I spoke with Trey briefly a little earlier tonight. He signed his NLI today. I know yall had a thread going on guys who had their NLI arrive, so I'm sure the staff here will update it when they get word. Trey had this to say about officially being in the fold: "It feels great to officially be a Longhorn. It was my dream college growing up and to make that dream come true is a great honor."
Andy and Trey sent me the photos below from their signings.

i've wasted too many minutes of my life following college baseball recruiting before the first day of the fall semester, but I'm sure I'll be following these kids until the last week of August.
Good stuff JW!!!

Good news is you won't have to wait that long anymore. I can't remember the exact date this year but the signing deadline is right around July 15. The rule started for this past draft. No more reporters camping outside of classrooms to see if a kid shows up.
Please don't be a stranger. That was great stuff. Thank you!
wow, I missed that change, thanks for the info, JW.
please feel free to post any and all college baseball news here. It doesn't matter to me if it's Horns related or not, I love college baseball.

Signatures are stupid. You should block them.
Certainly. Be glad to drop in anytime I have some interesting tidbits.
Another big college baseball fan here. Thanks for the updates...appreciate them.
Yes, many thanks for the info. Count me in as one of the college baseball fans.
