Arguably the best pound for pound fighter today... If you didn't like him before you will after watching this.
I'm too young to have ever really gotten into boxing.
Apparently I'm too old to every really get into MMA.
But that's okay cause it's about to be football season.
Those who can, do; those who can't, coach; those who never could, complain about the first two.
I'm wouldn't call myself an MMA fan either. But I know this Jon Bones guy is one bad dude and it's always good to see someone like him say OU sucks.
I do like the guy...a lot.
Not sure how I feel about him not taking the fight with Chael Sonnen on 8 days notice after Henderson hurt his knee, however, I can understand that Sonnen is a different kind of fighter than Henderson and is very talented in his own right. The risk/reward in that instance is not in his favor.
Bones is a highly intelligent individual who has a great head on his shoulder; he's actually a very humble guy. His brother, Arthur, is a D lineman for the Baltimore Ravens and it seems that the family is very tight.
Watching that clip solidifies my feelings for the guy...he's a definite stud!
Can you expound on this a little more please? I'm curious
"I don't hate you, I'm just not necessarily excited about your existence."
Thanks for giving me my first downvote Kelso. I just meant someone of his stature...
Wtf are you talking about? First, I don't downvote because it's stupid, and second, I didn't downvote you because I just asked a question.
Also, thanks for downvoting me for whatever reason. Maybe you should ask before hitting the little red button.
Chicken Bones Jones is a puss. He's running from Sonnen like a coward. And, anyone saying someone other than Spider Silva is the best pound for pound fighter hasn't watched much mma. I'm a die hard ufc fan, and think the world of Dana White for putting it together. I've boxed for 7 years but i honestly can't watch it anymore. But to the original topic, Bones Jones needs to frowns sack and quit running. Even Dana White and a few fighters are calling him a coward. You're the champ, act like it.
On one hand I can understand him not wanting to fight Sonnen because Sonnen has done absolutely nothing to deserve a title shot. He got his ass kicked by Silva, starting spouting stuff at Jones on twitter or some such nonsense, and now because he's a loud mouth he gets a title shot? That's just dumb assery. The thing I hate most about MMA, other than when a fight devolves into dudes holding each other on the ground for 20 minutes, is that they'll give title shots to people who didn't earn them. It's like pro wrestling in that aspect.
On the other hand, Bones got the title because he was a substitute fighter on short notice and won so you'd think he's return the favor that he was granted.
Sad, but true.
You guys shouldnt buy into Sonnens bullcrap talk. He talked all the way up to the Silva fight and got pimp slapped without much trouble. I still wonder if he ever went down to Brazil to attend that BBQ Silva invited him to. Anyway, Jones is very smart to turn that fight down. Different style of fighter and with no time to prep or train, it would be crazy to do it. As soon as you take someone lightly, they beat you. Just ask Amir Kahn and Victor Ortiz. They took fights from "lesser" opponents and got whipped.
Anyone that really thinks that Jones is afraid of anyone is crazy. Sonnen has sold you on his trash talk, which we all know is just talk.
There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.
I should really watch MMA more. Anyone want to fill me in on who's worth watching?
Jon Jones is well within his right to not fight Sonnen. Dana White treats a lot of those guys like trash and it's ok for a top guy in UFC to have some say in his career. I feel sorry for the other fighters but Dana White could have handled that situation better.

The sport has evolved to where guys are now training in several different disciplines from the first day they begin training. Rather than being a specialist as one thing (example: boxing, jui jitsu, wrestling), they are well-rounded at all the "mixed-martial-arts."
Rory McDonald is one of these guys. He's practically a kid, and he's whipping just about errbody's ass.
He and Junior Dos Santos are my two favorite fighters.
Sorry I have not posted in a while Song: The Cross by Nas
this further cements jon jones as my favorite fighter. you could tell the kid has something special after his fight with stephan bonnar, who is a beast and can take punishment like no other. bones is exciting to watch as he has a very unorthodoxed style (elbows, throws, etc) and will use every part of his body to hurt or tire out his opponent. he is very disciplined and that probably is what led to the decision not to go up against sonnen. eight days to train and prep for a guy with a totally different fighting style than the opponent you trained for is typically not a good thing. one lucky punch or bad step can end it for anyone in the ring. they typically bring in people that can emulate the opponent's size and style during their 3 months of training.
sonnen did not deserve it - when was the last time a fighter got a title shot after losing his previous matches? he has nothing to lose by taking the fight on short notice.
and fyi - jones and rua had a month to prepare. jones is fighting again later this month and was open to fighting rua or machido who are much more dangerous and qualified than sonnen. he got belfort instead who was a champion before and only recent loss was to silva. but age and size makes this less appealing.
silva vs jones would be awesome as both fighters are arguably the top fighters pound for pound. not only that but they are both just steamrolling their competition in their respective weight class.
Jones and MacDonald are two of the guys right now that I would pay to see.
Sonnen dominated Silva for 5 of their 7 rounds. No one else can say that. And, Jones is no Silva. Jones beat Rashaad Evans, awesome. The 205 class is scary weak, and while Jones can run for now, eventually that Sonnen fight will happen, just because there's no one else.
As for fighters you should watch, it just depends on your personality. I like Sonnen because he cracks me up. I'm also bias because I don't care much for the foreign fighters. I respect the hell out of them (Silva, Dos Santos mainly) but prefer the American fighters. Dan Henderson is another good one, though he's declining big time with age. Junior Dos Santos is a monster and lightening fast, the way he destroyed Mir was as impressive of a fight as I've seen.
I really don't believe that at all. Certainly, Sonnen talks quite a bit of mess, but he is the ONLY person who has come close to beating Silva in the past 6 years. He fought a total of 7 rounds against Anderson Silva and he's won 5 out of those 7. Not only did he win those rounds, but he absolutely dominated Silva. Of course the rounds he's lost ended up costing him the match, but he certainly was deserving of that fight. Silva caught Sonnen in a triangle in the first match, and a counter punch in the second. He won by his defense, not by controlling the fight. Sonnen's ability to dominate the clinch and the guard are what make him so dangerous. His lack of submission defense and zero chin, are what make him susceptible to get KTFO by Silva.
As for Jones, I lost a little bit of respect for the guy the way he handled the potential bout between him and Sonnen. While he has every right to not take the fight, he had been training for well over a full month, whereas Sonnen would be coming off a fresh TKO against Anderson Silva on only 8 days notice. His decision carried the weight of every other possible fight on that card, and his refusal to fight a match that he would almost certainly win, ended up costing ALOT of fighters' chances to get a paycheck. These undercard fighters rely on the minimal (usually $4-6000 per fight) salary for their standard of living, which isn't much by any means.
Stylistically, this fight would have been perfect for Jones. Here he is, the best p4p fighter in the world with amazing reach, striking ability, submission offense, insane Muy Thai and kickboxing, and a very unorthodox, yet relentless ground game. For Sonnen to be able to prepare for that as an undersized LHW (usually 25 lbs lighter on fight night) on only 8 days notice would be ridiculous. However, he was willing. Jones was not.
I respect Jones' decision, but I don't agree with it. Regardless, he says "OU sucks", which trumps any argument as to whether or not I like the guy.
Agreed. Dana White and the UFC brass are the main ones who deserve the blame.
I had my weekly grocery trip the same time he was there. Took me a while to park because of all those weirdos outside waiting in line. HEB on buffalo speedway in Houston. Cool story bro.
Well the hell is Roger Huerta when you need him?
Really? Crawl back into whatever trailer you just came out of.
I love how you try to justify your argument and give yourself credibility by saying you've "boxed for 7 years." Well, Bones Jones has only boxed for like 3 or 4 years and he'd kick the every living shit out of you. How do you feel about that?
Funny how you can call Bones a "puss" because he doesn't want to fight a guy who hasn't even earned a title shot on 8 days notice. You see, if Bones were to lose (which I have no doubt in my mind wouldn't happen) he stands to lose millions of dollars in future earnings and endorsements. Bones has become a very profitable brand and it would be absolutely stupid on his part to risk losing that by fighting a very formidable opponent who has a vastly different style than Henderson on 8 days notice. You can comprehend that, can't you dumbass?
Say what you want to say about Jones but don't call the guy a puss for making a decision that anyone with common sense would have made. Dana White is an absolute tool to call Bones out; all he's concerned about is the lost PPV revenue. He's just being a selfish bastard who has no concern about Jones other than the money Jones can make him.
So go take your toothless mouth and pathetic life back to the zero u board where you belong. Tool.
And in the famous words of Will Ferrell in old school: *I just blacked out, what happened* That's the way you debate!
You seem like a swell fella.
While I agree that Jones is not a "puss", you're wrong in thinking that he could lose his million dollars in endorsements by losing to Chael Sonnen. You give absolutely no warrants to this claim, and just kind of throw it out there blindly. He doesn't lose endorsements because he fights, he loses endorsements due to screwing up his personal life (a la Tiger Woods, Gilbert Godfried, etc...)
If Bones can escape a DUI, and still keep his Bud Light and UFC endorsement, I don't think he would lose it by dropping a fight against Chael Sonnen. Remember, Jones is only 24. Losing 1 fight won't ruin his career. In fact, it would probably make it more profitable as everyone like a fallen hero. it gives him something to work for and to mature as a fighter.
As far as preparing for Sonnen, thats a different story, but it shouldn't be a reason for the champ to duck the fight. Preparing for an underweight and unprepared Sonnen can be done in 8 days. Especially when you're trained by the best wrestling coach there is in UFC in Greg Jackson. It was a weak decision by Jones, although he was completely within his rights to cancel it, and you're right in saying that Dana White deserves ALL of the blame for this.
I think you might have missed my point but that's OK.
I am not suggesting he would lose his current endorsements; I am only suggesting he could and, in my opinion, would lose potential endorsements (ones he doesn't have yet) if he were to lose to Sonnen (or anyone for that matter). Jones is building quite a brand for himself (great looking guy, very intelligent, well spoken, etc.) and the longer he keeps winning, the bigger his legend becomes and therefore, the more potential he has to gain more endorsements, etc.
Look at someone like Brock Lesnar. For a while there, it was looking like he was the next big thing. I remember some "experts" saying that there wasn't anyone out there who could beat Lesnar. His legend was in the process of growing. And then suddenly he lost a couple of fights and next thing you know, he's out of the UFC.
If a losing streak similar to Lesnar's occurred for Jones, you don't think he could potentially lose future endorsements? That was my point.
The proposed fight against Sonnen was a losing proposition for Jones any way you look at it; if Jones loses, well, see my point above. If Jones wins, well, everyone expected him to win so big deal.
People sometimes forget this is a business and to be honest, I imagine Jones is more concerned with extending the period he has to earn millions than he is about being called a "puss" by some for "dodging" Sonnen.
That's just the way I see it.
Dude, its about winning the fight. Sonnen laid on Silva for 7 rounds and failed to take him out. Thats just pathetic. No hard punches while on top, no submissions of any type. Just some tippy tap slaps and rabbit punches. Sonnen is a joke and it has been proven now twice. Silva whipped him with a cracked rib for goodness sakes, that should tell you Sonnen is pathetic. He does not belong in the ring with Silva or Jones. He talks trash and that sells tickets, thats great, but he cant fight and obviously cant whip the elite. So, Silva and Jones may run from somebody, but Sonnon aint the one man.
People hate Silva and I dont know why. All he does is kick butt, pure and simple. Now, a few people want to dog Jones. Well, trust me, people still want to see Jones fight 100 times more than they want to see Sonnen.
